Short tears to extremities of several leaves along with light internal soiling and minor pencil to a small number of pages. Mild tanning to paper. Small faint stains to covers and small parts of pages with no effect on the reading of the text. The binding is sound but the paper is in such a state that some care will be required in handling to avoid the covers popping off the staples. He begins by asking: 'Can you tell me anything about Mr. Bennett Stuart of Wesley This is <.> servants asking for their master's characters. But I have a lad to place out & he is offered a place at Mr. Stuart - Wesley Vicarage - & I am rather disgusted at having already made an abortive attempt with another Clergyman to me previously unknown who wanted as it turned out a groom coachman valet & <> for 13 people al in one. So I should like to look before I leap in the present case.' He discusses the matter in a few lines before changing the subject with reference to Archdeacons and Lord Shaftesbury who has 'borrowed your shaft' and has 'callous Dissenting propensities'. 8vo., First Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 21 fine engraved plates, and very numerous engraved illustrations (many full-page) in the text, neat contemporary monogram on title, rear free endpaper lightly foxed; original blind-blocked cloth lettered in gilt, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip gilt laid down, uncut, a notably bright, clean, crisp copy. With 2pp publisher's advertisement bound in at end. First appearance of a standard work in the early resurgence of 'Gothic'. Dedicated to the Oxford Society, Barr's study is eminently practical and very well organised by architectural feature. As usual with Parker's publications, the plates and illustrations (which include a number by Jewitt) are both delightful and detailed. Uncommon in this condition.
