‎Édition originale de cet important traité, fort célèbre en son temps et qui fut très consulté. Le comte Lancelot de Turpin de Crissé (1716-1795) fit une brillante carrière militaire et se distingua notamment sur les champs de batailles d'Allemagne ; son dernier poste fut celui de commandant du fort de Scarpe, à Douai. Il obtint la grand-croix de Saint-Louis en 1787. En 1792, il prit l'exil en Allemagne où il mourut vers 1795. Membre des académies de Berlin, de Nancy et de Marseille, ses ouvrages sur l'art de la guerre furent très appréciés : son Essai fut traduit en allemand (1757), en russe (1758-1759) et en anglais (1761). Lancelot de Turpin de Crissé "cherche ici à établir une armée dans toutes les positions et dans tous les pays où elle peut se trouver dans le cours d'une campagne, en fournissant les moyens de la défendre et de l'attaquer. Il ne manque jamais d'accompagner de réflexions solides, le récit des plus grandes opérations de la guerre, et celui des manoeuvres pratiquées par les plus célèbres généraux anciens et modernes." ‎Nouvelle édition illustrée d'un portrait au frontispice, 3 vignettes de titre, et 41 planches dépliantes. Selon Brunet, première édition in-8 après l'originale in-4 parue en 1769 de ces Commentaires. Pages de titre en rouge et noir. Reliure en plein veau brun d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre de maroquin beige, pièce de tomaison de basane noire. Manque en tête du tome 2 comblé. Epidermures sur les plats reglacées à la cire. Traces de frottement. Bel exemplaire, au papier d'une très belle fraîcheur. Ex libris aux armes du XVIIIe Biel D. de Lislemont. Edition improprement dénommée Mémoires, que Brunet lui-même corrige en reprenant les faux-titres de l'ouvrage : Commentaires sur les mémoires de Montecuculi. "Les Mémoires de Montécuculi, si utilement commentés, éclaircis et même étendus dans plusieurs endroits par Turpin de Crissé, forment un corps de doctrine aussi complet que méthodique, en ce sens que la première partie de cet ouvrage contient les éléments purement abstraits de la science militaire, dont il donne, dans la seconde, une théorie fondée sur une hypothèse, et qu'il applique dans la troisième à des faits". Plein veau granité d'époque, dos à cinq nerfs portant titres et tomaisons dorés, double encadrement à froid sur les plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches mouchetées, gardes de papier marbré à la coquille. Coiffes manquantes, mors fendillés mais exemplaire solide, coins frottés, quelques éraflures sur les plats, rares rousseurs, page de titre et une planche restaurées sinon intérieur très frais.‎
