Tuttavia, questo metodo non può procedere in assenza di un'etica che metta al primo posto l'onestà nel raccogliere dati, descrivere esperimenti, discutere risultati e pubblicarli. Eppure, nella letteratura scientifica tre peccati capitali - fabbricazione di dati ed esperimenti, loro falsificazione e plagio - sono talmente diffusi da destare seria preoccupazione riguardo all'affidabilità di ciò che crediamo di sapere. A questi si aggiunge spesso una comunicazione che distorce i risultati ottenuti, volta ad ottenere vantaggi o a influenzare il pubblico. La comunità scientifica deve usare un linguaggio che non si presti a facili fraintendimenti, distinguendo fra opinioni e dati a supporto di quelle opinioni. Accostarci al metodo scientifico, studiare le fallacie logiche del discorso razionale, un minimo (davvero un minimo) di scienza del dato e ragionamento quantitativo ci può salvare dalle suggestioni e dalla sensazione superficiale di capire la scienza leggendo il titolo di un quotidiano. Curiosità e metodo ci faranno scoprire le frodi scientifiche, ma anche la bellezza e la potenza del ragionamento di cui siamo capaci. Solo così la scienza potrà essere utile alla società.
