Il brigante Crocco e la sua autobiografia
br. «La cleptomania potrà essere morbosa, potrà avere delle attenuanti, ma non cessa, almeno nel codice, di essere delitto». È il presupposto da cui prende le mosse questa ricostruzione delle gesta di Carmine Crocco Donatelli, pubblicata nel 1903 da un suo conterraneo. Concepito in aperta polemica verso le coeve memorie del capobanda, "Il brigante Crocco e la sua autobiografia" si pone l'obiettivo di mettere da parte tutte le eventuali motivazioni sociali e politiche del brigantaggio, per concentrarsi sull'asciutta cronaca dei crimini compiuti. Ne scaturisce un racconto crudo di violenza e sangue, corredato da una ricca appendice di documenti tratti dalla stampa dell'epoca e dagli atti processuali. Un testo per comprendere, al di là di ogni tentativo di idealizzazione, cos'è stato il brigantaggio meridionale.

ril. Nel libro sono descritti poco meno di duecento delitti e suicidi italiani, tutti recenti e nessuno particolarmente celebre. L'autore si è permesso di fingere che accadessero in una sola giornata e li ha dunque sistemati secondo il procedere delle ventiquattro ore, da un'alba all'altra. A parte questo, i fatti (compresa l'ora) sono autentici. L'autore ha qui voluto ribadire un esercizio di brevità che sperimenta ormai da anni sulla stampa quotidiana e periodica e relativamente a qualunque soggetto gli sia affidato. I delitti anche se nel "Coro" ulteriormente limati - sono apparsi a suo tempo nella rubrica omonima del "Foglio" del lunedì.
