La Tarnowska ebbe tresche e sfruttò molti spasimanti, finì in carcere per un efferato delitto del 1907 (qui evocato in un articolo-recensione del 'Corriere della Sera' di Ettore JANNI, 31 agosto 1912, ALLEGATO), ne doveva poi uscire nel 1915 per farsi mantenere a Parigi da un ennesimo merlo. La Vivanti è qui interlocutrice, con dostojevskiana empatia, della protagonista. Gran donna la VIVANTI, paladina dell'indipendenza irlandese e delle nazionalità oppresse; e delle donne; scrittrice apprezzata da Carducci e da Croce. L'anglofobia dei fascisti la confinò a Arezzo, ma Musssolini le concesse di tornare a Torino dove c'era la sua amica Barbara AllasoN e dove si convertì al cattolicesimo; morì addolorata dal suicidio della figlia violinista. Rara, e in bella legatura, questa prima edizione.

(la prima usci' nel 1837) di questo importante trattato del maggior riformatore delle carceri del Regno delle Due Sicilie. Volpicella, sociologo, venne incaricato da Ferdinando II di prendere informazioni sul sistema carcerario in Europa e nel mondo. Volpicella utilizzo' come fonte principale le opere di John Howard, che, alla fine del Settecento, intraprese un vero e proprio viaggio alla scoperta dei maggiori luoghi di detenzione europei. Nella prima parte del trattato l'A. passa in rassegna le prigioni dei principali paesi (Inghilterra, Scozia, Irlanda, Svezia, Danimarca, Prussia, Polonia, Olanda, Francia, Svizzera, Spagna, Portogallo). Secondo l'A., che segue la cosiddetta 'teoria dell'intimidazione', il modo piu' efficace per tenere gli uomini lontani da questi luoghi, e quindi prevenire la criminalita', e' l'associare al carcere l'immagine di posto spaventoso e orribile. A tal fine devono essere costruiti in luoghi isolati e quasi inaccessibili, le 'mura nere e massicce, le porte ferrate e chiuse, niuna finestra e poche feritoie di fuori', anche se dentro 'siano comode e sanissime'. Al prigioniero deve essere assolutamente vietato l'incontro con parenti e amici. Tuttavia, per non recidere completamente i legami con la famiglia, al detenuto si possono dare notizie dei parenti 'ma non troppo frequentemente e per modo che una simile licenza possa talvolta parer un favore conceduto a quelli che nella loro prigionia danno buoni segni di ravvedimento'. Prevale l'ottica che vede nell'istituzione carceraria un luogo 'di purgazione e di emenda' in cui 'un ragionato soffrire dee attuar i malvagi pensieri e le inconsiderate voglie, e i costumi emendare'. L'A. spiega quindi i metodi con cui si puo' aiutare il detenuto a pentirsi: in primo luogo non gli devono essere continuamente rammentate le sue colpe passate, anzi 'fa d'uopo aver cura attentissima di niente fare o dire che le cause possa ricordar loro di quella infermita' o l'infermita' stessa e i suoi miserabili effetti'. Utile sarebbe anche istituire delle funzioni religiose all'entrata e all'uscita del carcerato per cominciare ad 'implorare l'aiuto divino' per chi entra e come forma di ringraziamento per chi esce. Anche il lavoro puo' diventare un efficace strumento di redenzione, poiche' insegna l'ordine e la disciplina, allontanando dall'ozio quanti potrebbero peggiorare ulteriormente trascorrendo una vita inerte e inoperosa. Per quanto riguarda le punizioni da sottoporre ai carcerati, i Direttori 'come veri padri di famiglia' sono in diritto di comminarle. La punizione deve domare gli spiriti irrequieti ma non nuocere alla sanita' del corpo ne' avvilire l'anima. A seconda del tipo di infrazione commessa, Volpicella individua una punizione adatta: chi disobeddisce puo' essere tenuto in camere buie per qualche giorno o ricevere solo pane e acqua; chi e' pigro al lavoro puo' essere obbligato a girare la ruota del mulino; a colui che non osserva il silenzio puo' essere lasciato in bocca per qualche ora un pezzo di legno; l'atto di violenza deve essere punito con il corpetto di forza o con la 'repressione verticale', che consiste nel legare il prigioniero al muro impedendogli i movimenti. Saggio di grande interesse, che testimonia la particolare anomalia italiana in campo carcerario, legata alla sua arretratezza in campo industriale. In Italia, infatti, e' venuta a mancare quella fase storica in cui l?istituzione penitenziaria ha svolto una funzione di addestramento al lavoro di fabbrica e di controllo del mercato della forza lavoro.
