‎Erste u. einzige Ausgabe. - Porträtsammlung aller Zürcher Bürgermeister von 1336 bis 1742. Der Zürcher Maler Johann Caspar Füssli (1706-1782) schuf im Auftrag seines Schülers Sebastian Walch (1721-1788) die Vorlagen nach in der Zürcher Stadtbibliothek aufbewahrten Gemälden. Zusammen mit dem Nürnberger Kupferstecher V. D. Preissler (1717–1765) stach Walch die gezeichneten Portraits in Schabmanier und veröffentlichte sie im Selbstverlag. Der den Tafeln vorausgehende Text enthält eine Widmung an die beiden Zürcher Bürgermeister Johann Caspar Escher und Johannes Fries sowie ein chronologisches Verzeichnis aller abgebildeten Bürgermeister von Rudolf Brun bis Johannes Hofmeister, jeweils mit Wahljahr, Todesjahr und Zunftzugehörigkeit. Die Schabkunst-Manier oder ‘Die Mezzotinto – Radierung’ ist eine barocke, zeit- und arbeitsaufwändige Tiefdrucktechnik aus dem 17.Jh., die sich besonders zur Darstellung von Licht und Schatten eignet. Sie wurde 1662 von Ludwig von Siegen in Deutschland erfunden, jedoch bald als „englische Manier“ bezeichnet. Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert wurde sie vor allem für die Herstellung von Gemälde-Reproduktionen verwendet. Erst Edward Munch verhalf ihr zu einer künstlerischen Eigenständigkeit. Die Mezzotinto ist das Druckverfahren, das besonders effektvoll Plastizität und Körperhaftigkeit sowie Licht und Schatten zur Darstellung bringt. Lonchamp 3226. Image disp.‎
