‎Mathieu BEUVELET ( 1621 ou 1622 ou 1624 - 1656 ou 1657 ) avocat puis prêtre , oncle et parrain du bienheureux Nicolas Roland . " Tout jeune avocat (ne en 1621, il avait donc vingt-deux ans) et fort intelligent, il semblait destiné a une belle carrière juridique. Au college des Jésuites de Reims, il avait excellé dans les Humanites, comme, à Paris, dans ses études de droit. Mais déjà , dans le secret de son coeur , il entendait l'appel du Christ [...] Ecolier, on admirait, autant que ses dons intellectuels, sa vertu. Maintenant, une précoce austérité, qui ne devait rien aux dossiers professionnels, marquait l'avocat debutant [...] Mathieu decida d'entrer au service exclusif de Dieu. Il debattit quelque temps si ce serait dans le clergé régulier ou séculier. Pour s' éclairer, il alla, en 1644, frapper à la porte de la communauté de Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet ou il consulta MM. Simon Cailleaux et Francois Vuyart qui, avec le célèbre Bourdoise, l'avaient fondée en 1612. C'etaient pour lui vieilles connaissances ; il avait déjà amorcé avec eux une vie communautaire à Marle-sur-Serre, Simon Cailleaux étant originaire de la même ville et Francois Vuyard du Laonnois. Hommes graves s'il en fut, tout incendiés de la flamme apostolique de Bourdoise, ils le dissuadèrent de s'orienter vers un ordre religieux.Comment s'en etonner ? Promoteurs, avec Bérulle, Olier, Vincent de Paul et Bourdoise, de la réforme du clergé, ils éprouvaient, plus que quiconque, lanécessité de mener a bien cette oeuvre qui commandait toutes les autres. La valeur d'un Mathieu Beuvelet ne leur échappait pas. Intelligence, culture, vertu, austérite de vie, il rassemblait tout cela en sa personne. Quelle recrue pour ces bons ouvriers ! Oui, oui, Mathieu doit se joindre à eux pour rendre au clergé de France sa dignite. C'est dans la piétaille ecclésiastique qu'il lui fallait mener le combat. Que pourrait-il donc faire de mieux, tout en se sanctifiant lui-même, que de susciter des saints ?... Leur propos fut décisif. En cette même année 1644, Mathieu Beuvelet recevait la tonsure à Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet et se mettait a l'étude de la théologie. Cependant, il n'entra pas alors dans la communauté ; il la seconda du dehors, son centre d'apostolat restant, d'ailleurs, la paroisse du Chardonnet. Il y faisait, notamment, les catéchismes, avec un tel bonheur qu'aux enfants se joignaient des adultes, voire fort cultivés. Il doublait ses études theologiques d'une méditation très personnelle et approfondie du caractère et des obligations de l'état ecclésiastique. D'autre part, chez lui comme chez tous les grands réformateurs de ce temps qu'il coudoyait quotidiennement, la pensée des écoles doublait celle de la rénovation du clergé. [...]La part considérable que Mathieu prenait a Paris, avec les prêtres du groupe Bourdoise, à la vie paroissiale de Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet, le rendait attentif a ce qui se passait dans les paroisses de Reims. Il constata que le catéchisme y etait fort négligé. Les cures ne s'en, occupaient guère que durant le Carême. Il convainquit celui de Saint-Symphorien de catéchiser les enfants tous les dimanches. L'exemple gagna de proche en proche les autres paroisses. Si jeune que fut encore M. Beuvelet trente et un ans il jouissait du plus grand prestige ; sa valeur et sa vertu s'imposaient. D'ailleurs, deux prêtres remois, fort influents aussi et parents des Roland, le secondaient activement. L'un etait M. Augier, l'autre ce M. Caillou, qui sera plus tard le sage et circonspect conseiller de Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. Ainsi épaulé et entrainé par le succès, M. Beuvelet rêva d'une communaute ecclésiastique qui serait l'édition remoise de celle de Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet. Trois ou quatre prêtres répondirent à son appel; une maison fut meme achetée sur le territoire de Saint-Jacques. Cette fondation ne devait pas prendre racine, mais, inlassable, M. Beuvelet allait, au cours d'un nouveau voyage à Reims qu'il fit l'année suivante, grouper quelques prêtres en communauté dans la paroisse Saint-Hilaire, cette fois, pour donner des conférences ecclésiastiques; MM.
