The War Papers volumes are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill�s Official Biography. This volume contains documents from May 1940 the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries through December 1940 with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain but nonetheless weak isolated and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. This second War Papers volume was the penultimate volume of the Official Biography completed by Sir Martin Gilbert 1936-2015 before his death. This British first edition is considerably more scarce than the U.S. first edition which is similar in appearance. This copy is very good in a near fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square and tight with minimal shelf wear confined to extremities but a bit concave at the upper spine from the weight of the massive text block. The contents are bright and clean. We find no spotting or previous ownership marks and only slight dust soiling to the top edge of the text block. The dust jacket is unclipped and entirely complete with no losses or tears with light sunning to the spine. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable archival quality clear cover. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill initiated by Randolph Churchill but substantially completed by Martin Gilbert is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. Gilbert saw completion of all eight main text volumes and seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill initiated by Randolph Churchill but substantially completed by Martin Gilbert is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - nineteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today although the three War Papers document volumes were the last completed by Gilbert before his death. The three volumes of The War Papers were published by Heinemann between 1993 and 2000. The first volume contains documents from the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 to May 1940 the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the Low Countries. The second volume contains documents from May 1940 the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the Low Countries through December 1940 with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain but nonetheless weak isolated and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. The third volume contains documents from 1941 which ended with the attack on Pearl Harbor formal entry of the United States into the war and Churchill addressing both a joint session of the U.S. Congress as well as the Canadian Parliament. There were both British and U.S. editions. These British first editions are considerably more scarce particularly Volumes 1 & 2 and highly sought than the U.S. first editions which are similar in appearance. This set of all three features unread near fine or better volumes in near fine or better dust jackets. The red cloth bindings of all three volumes are square clean and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only trivial shelf wear to extremities. The contents of all three volumes are crisp clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Even the page edges remain immaculately bright and clean. The dust jackets are crisp clean and complete unclipped with no loss or appreciable wear. The sole defect noted is modest sunning to the Volume 2 spine. This fifth volume covers the period 1922-1939 spanning events such as Churchill's purchase of his beloved country home Chartwell the end of his Parliamentary career as a Liberal and his return to the Conservatives. This volume includes highs such as the latter half of the 1920s which Churchill spent as the powerful Chancellor of the Exchequer and lows such as the wilderness years of the 1930s which Churchill spent out of power and out of favor persistently warning about the growing Nazi threat and routinely at odds with both his own Conservative Party leadership and prevailing public sentiment. Condition is very good plus in a very good plus dust jacket. The red cloth binding remains square clean and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. Trivial shelf wear to the bottom edge and a trace of mottling to the lower rear corner are the only tiny flaws noted. The contents are bright with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The red stained top edge is lightly sunned to dark pink but nonetheless retains respectable color. The British first edition dust jacket proved highly susceptible to sunning to a green color. This jacket is clean and complete with no loss tears or even appreciable wear to extremities. The jacket spine has sunned to dark green but uniformly so and remains quite presentable nonetheless. The lower front flap of the first edition dust jacket originally featured two prices an introductory price �until February 28th 1977� with a higher price above. Both original prices remain intact. The dust jacket is protected with a removable clear archival cover. The Official Biography was begun by Winston�s son Randolph Churchill 1911-1968 and completed by Sir Martin Gilbert 1936-2015. In 1962 at the age of 25 Martin Gilbert joined Churchill's biography team then led by Churchill's son Randolph. Of what became his life's work Gilbert says: "I'd thought I'd last four or five months." Instead when Randolph died in 1968 with only two of the eight volumes completed Gilbert took over committing the substantial portion of his scholarship and life's work to documenting comprehending and communicating what Gilbert called the "remarkable and versatile life" of Winston Churchill. The result is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The British first editions of the eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The British first editions of the Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are among the most keenly sought and prohibitive to acquire of all first edition Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes. Here is an author�s presentation copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions the British first edition only printing. The volume contains documents from the years 1922 to 1929 from the time when Churchill left the Liberal Party rejoined the Tories and became Chancellor of the Exchequer 1924-1929. This copy came to us with two letters about the volume from the author Sir Martin Gilbert to Lloyd L. Thomas one of the author�s proofreaders. Thomas is specifically thanked by name by the author in the Acknowledgements page xxii for �help in proof-reading.� The author�s first signed letter to Thomas dated 31 August 1978 is both lengthy and substantive. Much of the letter concerns the challenges and tasks attendant to publication of this document volume. In the letter�s fourth paragraph Gilbert discusses the pressure placed upon him by his publisher to limit biographic text about the war years to 700 pages. Gilbert states in his letter �I cannot imagine how it will be done.� Indeed it was not done and the historian trumped the publisher. Gilbert would ultimately write two Official Biography main text volumes chronicling Churchill�s war years each considerably longer than 700 pages. Gilbert closes with a request for further proof-reading assistance from Thomas with the final page proofs of this document volume. The letter is hand-signed �with kind regards yours sincerely Martin Gilbert�. The second letter dated 21 September 1978 clearly indicates that Thomas consented to further proof-reading of the volume for Gilbert. Gilbert writes: �Thank you so much for the further proofs�� Gilbert talks about handing over the next two document volumes to the printer and solicits Thomas� further assistance: �If when the winter nights are on us you feel like tackling some more there will certainly be no shortage of printed pages!� The letter is hand-signed �yours most sincerely Martin Gilbert.� Thomas clearly assented to Gilbert�s request for further proof-reading as he is thanked in the acknowledgements of the next two document volumes as well. Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The mammoth red cloth binding remains square and intact with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note very light scuffing and shelf wear. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks. Spotting and soiling is confined to the page edges. The red-stained top edge is mildly sunned to dark pink. The dust jacket is complete with no losses or tears. There were two prices on the lower front dust jacket flap an introductory price good �until 1st February 1981� and a higher price above. Both prices remain intact. We note very light soiling and overall toning but no sunning of the spine text. The dust jacket is protected in a removable archival quality clear cover. Condition of both letters is excellent both neatly creased from previous folds but otherwise unmarked. Please note that this large heavy book may require additional postage.
