The Official Biography of Winston Churchill initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are perhaps the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. The British and U.S. first editions saw just a single printing and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many first edition Official Biography sets will forever do without. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. The U.S. editions were published using British sheets but more elaborately bound with tan linen spines over blue buckram boards with blue spine title panels printed in red and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and vertical red transition rules between the tan linen and blue buckram. This U.S. first edition of Companion Volume V Part 2 is in near fine condition in a very good dust jacket. The binding is immaculate - clean tight and square with no discernible wear. The only flaws we find are a trivial wrinkle to the binding cloth at the head of the front hinge - perhaps a binding flaw perhaps a tiny bump. The contents are bright and crisp the volume clearly unread. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. We note a light .75 inch pen mark at the top edge near the spine clearly a stray pen rather than a remainder mark. The dust jacket is bright and complete with no losses and retaining the original front flap price. There is some incidental soiling at the hinges flap folds and upper rear face modest wrinkling to the bottom edge at the spine and front face and .25 inch closed tears at the spine ends and bottom edge of the front face. We note light shelf wear to the bottom edge and a hint of wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edge retains deep unfaded color. The dust jacket is clean bright and complete with no tears or losses and still retains the original front flap price. What prevents our grading the dust jacket higher than "very good" is wrinkling and light creasing to the spine. This is the British first edition of the second volume of The War Papers which are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill's Official Biography. This volume contains documents from May 1940 the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries through December 1940 with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain but nonetheless weak isolated and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. This British first edition is considerably more scarce and highly sought than the U.S. first edition which is similar in appearance. This copy is very good in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners bright spine gilt and minimal wear confined to extremities but a bit concave at the upper spine from the weight of the massive text block. The contents are nonetheless bright and clean internally with no spotting no previous ownership marks and very light soiling to the text block edges. The dust jacket is unclipped and entirely complete with no losses or tears. We note light sunning to the jacket spine minor wrinkling at the spine ends and some creasing to the edge of the unclipped front flap. The red cloth binding is clean and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The flaw that prevents this copy from being in near-fine condition is a pronounced vertical dimple at the center of the spine a clear result of the massive 3-inch thick volume having been laid open and read. That said it was otherwise read carefully since the contents remain clean and bright with no spotting and no inscriptions. The page edges remain likewise clean and bright. The red-stained top edge is modestly sunned to dark pink. There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 September 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket. The dust jacket remains clean and bright with no losses tears or soiling. The spine print remains bright and unfaded. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of the Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922. All three volumes are fine in very good dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are all clean and fresh with bright gilt and good corners. The Part 2 boards have dark vertical striations that are clearly a binding flaw. The contents of all three volumes are crisp clean bright and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red stained top edges retain deep unfaded red color. The dust jackets are unclipped with only trivial wrinkling at extremities. The Volume IV spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning often fading to nearly white. This set is better than usual but still affected. The red title lettering at the head of the spines is bright and clear. The Title and author lettering at the center of the spine and the publisher name at the base of the spine are still clearly legible but a bit faded. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922 encompassing Churchill's return to the government after the Dardanelles disaster and his final six years in power as a Liberal serving at various Cabinet posts in the coalition government of Lloyd George. This is the elusive U.S. first edition only printing which is far more scarce than its British counterpart. This is a full set of all three Volume IV companions near-fine in very good dust jackets. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. These U.S. editions were more elaborately bound with tan linen spines over dark red buckram boards with red spine title blocks printed in black and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and dark blue ruled transitions at the border between the tan linen and red buckram. Here the bindings are clean bright tight and square. The only exterior flaws we find are bumps at the Part 3 lower corners and upper spine. The contents are crisp clean and bright. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. We note a hint of soiling to the top edges and that the lower portion of pages 1637-1640 of Part 3 were not fully trimmed by the binder. All three dust jackets are unclipped still bearing the original price on the upper front flap. All three jackets are also complete with no losses or tears. The spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning often fading to nearly white. This set is an exception featuring bright entirely unfaded spine printing. Unfortunately the spines are toned and soiled most significantly on the Part 3 dust jacket. The blank rear faces show lighter soiling with the front faces remaining clean and bright. The only signs of jacket wear are slight wrinkling at a few spine ends. The dust jackets are protected in removable archival quality clear covers. The War Papers are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill's Official Biography. This volume contains documents from the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 to May 1940 the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries. There were both British and U.S. editions both now out of print. This British first edition is considerably more scarce and highly sought than the U.S. first edition which is similar in appearance. This copy is not only inscribed and dated by the author but near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square clean and tight retaining sharp corners a nicely rounded spine and bright spine gilt. Minor wrinkling at the spine ends is the only flaw noted. The contents are bright and clean with no spotting or previous ownership marks other than the author's inscription. The dust jacket is bright clean and unclipped with no losses or tears. Notably the red dust jacket spine is entirely unfaded with no color shift between the jacket faces and spine. The only dust jacket flaw noted is a minor scratch to the lower portion of the rear dust jacket face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable archival quality clear cover.
