Objects of Change: The Archaeology and History of Arika Contact with Europeans
xiv317 pages with maps charts graphs appendices and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's brown cloth with black lettering in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The Arikaras a North American Indian tribe of the Northern Plains experienced a complex reaction to contact with Europeans a response whose evolution can be traced through two hundred years of material culture. Rather than view the two cultures in contact purely from the advancing Europeans' point of view J Daniel Rogers demonstrates that for more than a century the Arikaras largely controlled the interaction through their perception o exchange e.g. the fur trade as a social process and through their cultural incorporation of the Europeans. The author compares changes in Arikara artifact assemblages with known events and strategic social shifts. This allows a series of artifact processes to be identified creating a linkage that may have wide application to the basic archaeological problem of interpreting material culture. The Lithic Artifacts of La Libertad Chiapas Mexico: An Economic Perspective
xx286 pages with frontispiece 96 figures 175 tables and appendixes. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" issued in wrappers. Appendix by Fred W Nelson. Papers of the New World Archaeological Foundation number 52. 1st edition. The lithic artifacts presented in this report were excavated at La Libertad Chiapas Mexico in 1975-76 and first made available in 1977; a preliminary study of the obsidian was completed in 1978. As in any work of this extensive nature research was conducted and descriptions compiled over a number of years. In several cases collections were analyzed repeatedly in order to bring analysis more up to date. In 1978 the author analyzed the obsidian for an MA thesis and subsequent research made clear that technological analysis of the obsidian needed revision. One goal of the study has been to move beyond basic description and to show that data significant for resolving wider problems of economic and cultural evolution can be delivered from utilitarian stone artifacts. Ancient Maya Relief Sculpture
Unpaginated with 60 plates. Quarto 11 1/4" x 11 1/4" bound in original publisher's beige wrappers with dark brown lettering to front wrapper and spine in original slipcase. Limited to 4000 copies. Rubbings by Merle Green. Foreword by Robert L Rands. First edition. Much of the finest work of the Maya artist was in low-relief sculptress and much of the best of it appears in this book particularly the exquisite work of Palenque. In many of these rubbings we can see the artists' work better than could the Maya themselves; rubbings artificially reproduce the bes effects of light and shadow. Anyone with experience in photographing Maya reliefs will recall waiting for the few minutes of ech day when the sun's position is right to bring up the relief. Sometimes the wait will last for months until the sun crosses the meridian and illuminates the north face of the monument then another long wait for the sun to recorss to cas shadows on the south face. Some of the reliefs were inside buildings and their Maya viewers never saw them with the sharpness of detail caught in Greene's rubbings. The rubbings here can aptly be compared to a family album of photographs. Here as in the family album there is no systematic effort to cover the subject; the rubbings were not made by an archaeologist to illustrate some aspect of craft. Instead choice of subjects was governed by such factors as accessibility state of preservation and depth relief. Moreover as in the case of the family album range of subjects was circumscribed. Only low relief sculpture is represented; the graceful tall shafts of Quirigua the high relief stelae of Copan the brilliant murals of Bonampak the closely allied painted pottery are all preforce absent. The Danzantes of Monte Alban Part I: Text
79 pages with figures tables drawings and bibliography. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archaeology Number Nineteen. First edition. One characteristic of Monte Albán is the large number of carved stone monuments one encounters throughout the plaza. The earliest examples are the so-called "Danzantes" literally dancers found mostly in the vicinity of Building L and which represent naked men in contorted and twisted poses some of them genitally mutilated. The figures are said to represent sacrificial victims which explains the morbid characteristics of the figures. The Danzantes feature physical traits characteristic of Olmec culture. The 19th century notion that they depict dancers is now largely discredited and these monuments dating to the earliest period of occupation at the site Monte Albán I are now seen to clearly represent tortured sacrificed war prisoners some identified by name and may depict leaders of competing centers and villages captured by Monte Albán Marcus and Flannery 1996; Blanton et al. 1996. Over 300 "Danzantes" stones have been recorded to date and some of the better preserved ones can be viewed at the site's museum. There is some indication that the Zapotecs had writing and calendrical notation. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed some light soiling else a very good copy. Dumbarton Oaks hardcover

John M. Ludlow
Thoughts On the Policy of the Crown Towards India [Hardcover]
The year 1857 was a Turning Point in the History of British India. In this year the Sepoy Mutiny broke out, which, though suppressed by force by the then Government of the East India Company, riveted the attention of all educated Englishmen on India. Statesmen, Parliamentarians and people concerned with the welfare of the British nation went deep into the causes of the Mutiny and analysed its immediate and far-reaching impacts on the Military Strength and Financial resources of England. The causes of the disaster were not far to seek. The general maladministration of the Company, their annexation policy, interference with the age-old practice of succession by adoption among the Indian princes, fear of the Indian people both the Hindus and the Musalmans - that the Government, with the help of the Christian missionaries, are trying to convert the whole nation into Christianity, Discrimination of the natives from the Englishmen in Civil and military services as well as in the administration of justice, etc. became known as the causes behind the Mutiny. The future of the Indian Empire appeared to be grim to all right thinking persons in England. As a result of this retrospection and debate at home, the British Government of Queen Victoria decided to act to the right direction. Then came the Queen's Proclamation, the India Bill was passed by the British Parliament, the time-honoured administration of the East India Company swept away, the Government of India was transferred to the Crown, and a reponsible Ministry for India established. The Queen's Proclamation was welcomed both in England and in India. It promised redress to all the above mentioned grievances and to establish an impartial clean Government for the Indians. The present work, written by a contemporary British thinker, is an interpretative Study of the Queen's proclamation and the post-mutiny policy of the Crown towards India. It takes up the Proclamation, section by section, and analyses the various promises contained therein. To make the subject properly understandable, the author has described the conditions existing prior to the Mutiny and the grievances of the people on various accounts, in great details. The work is a record of the State of affirs before and after the Reforms and an interpretation of the Policies of the British Government towards India. The work has been reprinted from the 1859 Edition in view of its importance as source Material for the study of the evolution of British Raj in India. ISBN: 978-0-87661-639-0.</p><p>This concise and beautifully illustrated book demonstrates the many roles played by the horse in the lives of the Greeks from its place in myth and early history to its significance as a marker of social status and its use in warfare transportation games and festivals. From their arrival in Greece at the start of the Middle Bronze Age ca. 2000 B.C. horses were a powerful symbol of rank. Bridles and other horse trappings are often found in graves alongside vases depicting horses grazing racing and parading. Sculpture is also full of horse imagery from monumental equestrian statues a bronze leg and gilded sword are all that remain from one of these to tiny terracotta figurines perhaps the toys of a child. As well as presenting many examples of horse imagery found in the Agora the author reports on recent finds near the ancient hipparcheion the stables of the Athenian cavalry.</p><p>==================================================================</p><p><strong>IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. <p>American School of Classical Studies at Athens 2010. Fifth edition. In English. Soft cover 22 cm 192 pp. ill.: 147 figs. ISBN: 978-0-87661-657-4.</p><p>This definitive guide to the archaeological remains in the civic and commercial center of ancient Athens is an essential companion to the interested visitor as well as to students of the topography of the classical city. A large-scale map provides an overview of the site keyed to descriptions and plans of every monument still visible from the majestic Temple of Hephaistos to the utilitarian Great Drain. The fifth edition retains many of the elements that made the earlier editions so popular but also takes full account of new discoveries and recent scholarship. It is intended for visitors touring the site and is arranged topographically monument by monument. Also included are an overview of the historical development of the site and a history of the excavations. A companion guide to the Agora Museum in the Stoa of Attalos is also available <em>The Athenian Agora: Museum Guide</em> by Laura Gawlinski 2014.<br /><br />John McK. Camp II is Director of Excavations at the Athenian Agora and Professor of Classics at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia.<br /><br />Reviews:<br />"This is a very useful guidebook to what was once the civic and commercial centre of ancient Athens. The book is well organized and practical. It is small and light yet it contains all the essential information needed to understand the Agora. The inclusion of maps photographs including aerial views drawings and floor plans renders the identification of monuments easier for the visitor and is truly one of the strengths of this publication. This guidebook is an essential companion to the visitor of this fascinating site." Derek T. Irwin <em>BMCR</em> 2010.12.13.</p><p>==================================================================</p><p><strong>IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order.
