Marconi, Clemente
TEMPLE DECORATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE ARCHAIC GREEK WORLD The Metopes of Selinus
Lower corners bumped. ; In this book, Clemente Marconi provides a new interpretation for the use of figural decoration in Greek temples of the Archaic period, through a study of the Archaic metopes of Selinus. The study of figural decoration on Greek temples has traditionally been identified with the broader study of architectural sculpture. At the same time, the original, articulated appearance of Archaic temples has been fragmented into a discussion of individual types. Marconi argues against both the typological approach and the tendency to investigate style and iconography as two aspects unrelated to the cultural and social background within which temple decoration operated. He explores the relation between style and function and examines the function of figures on temples within the cultural and social context of the communities for which these images were created. Critical to this exploration are the reintegration of the figures into the fabric of buildings, the space of Archaic sanctuaries and cities, and the ritual dimension that represented the context for the reception of the figural decoration of Greek temples. Marconi argues for a closer interaction between art history and disciplines such as semiotics, anthropology, and hermeneutics. ; 10.3 X 7.1 X 1.1 inches; 370 pages

The View from Nebo : How Archeology Is Rewriting the Bible and Reshaping the Middle East
New York NY U.S.A.: Little Brown & Company 2000. New York: Little Brown 2000. First edition. Cloth binding 284 pp. The view from the summit of Nebo -- the mountain from which Moses was permitted to gaze at the Promised Land -- is always changing as our knowledge of biblical history is changed by our uncovering of scientific facts. Tel Aviv-based Wall Street Journal reporter Amy Dockser Marcus investigates how modern archaeology is changing not only our understanding of the Scriptures but the face of the Middle East today. Blending science history politics and biblical scholarship Marcus tours the books of the Old Testament while revealing startling new discoveries about the history of that time. For example she shows the pyramids were not built by Israelite slaves but by Egyptian artisans and laborers and the Babylonian Exile is now believed to have been suffered by a relative minority with life in Judah going on much as before. PETRA
2 tears to DJ (1 repaired with tape). Light foxing to top of textblock. ; "If ever a dead city held romance it is Petra. . . . Hewn out of ruddy rock in the midst of a mountain wilderness, sumptuous in ornament and savage in environs, poised in wildness like a great carved opal glowing in a desert, this lost caravan city staggers the most experienced traveller." So wrote Rose Macaulay in her Pleasure of Ruins (1953) , echoing the sentiments of generations of travelers before and since. Reached through a narrow, winding crevasse between looming cliffs in south Jordan, Petra served as the capital city of the Nabatean Arabs from the third century B. C. E to 106 C. E. (when it was occupied by the Roman emperor Trajan). In this lavishly illustrated book, Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo and Eugenia Equini Schneider provide an accessible overview of the history and culture of the Nabateans, including their language, religion, politics, and economy, as well as a detailed guide to the city of Petra and its art and architecture. A major stop on the spice trade route, Petra attracted wealth and culture from across the Arabic and classical worlds and was abundantly furnished with more than 800 monuments. Perhaps the most well known of these is the Khazneh el-Faroun, or Treasury, a royal tomb more than 130 feet high with a magnificent Hellenistic facade carved from the salmon pink sandstone of the surrounding cliffs. But no less impressive were Petra's advanced achievements in hydraulic engineering, including elaborate water conservation systems and dams. For anyone who has felt the lure and wonder of ancient cities and civilizations in exotic locations, Petra will be a delightful and invaluable resource. ; 11.3 X 10.1 X 0.9 inches; 204 pages

Athenian Democracy Speaking through its Inscriptions - Exhibition of Inscriptions from the Epigraphic Museum
<p>In english. Soft cover 31X24 cm 156 pp. ill. 940 gr. // "The concepts of democracy and publicity are profoundly and organically interlinked. It is no coincidence therefore that the archetypal example of the ancient Athenian democracy is so closely associated with the systematic recording of its activity in a variety of written texts. These were announced and erected in public areas so that they could be read and so that they could document its decisions and through these its thought and methods. The citizens could and theoretically at least had a duty to be aware of what the state they shared was doing and how it ought to function. The hard material of marble or more ordinary categories of stone became for the Athenians – as of course for other Greeks – the precious enduring writing material on which this programme was realised" from the Preface of Dr. Lagouianni-Georgakarakou Director of the Epigraphic Museum and Dr. Kostas Bourazelis Professor of Ancient History Athens University supervisors of the exhibition presented by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Melbourne. // Presented are inscriptions clay public tokens a clepsydra – water clock – juror’s ballots a juror’s tablet and ostracism shreds – free translation of the texts and commentaries. - From the contents: A The birth of democracy and decrees. B Aspects of the structure and functioning of the developed Athenian democracy. C The vicissitudes of the Athenian democracy in the 5th ce. B.C. Periods in which the democratic constitution was subject to limitations. Penalties for those who disbanded the democracy and honours for those who supported it. D The Athenian democracy: strungles periods of restriction and adaptability: from the confrontation with Macedonia down to Roman times.</p> Hellenic Foundation for Culture - Epigraphic Museum paperback

<p>In english. Hard cover 25X33 cm 76 pp. 16 drawings 64 plates; weight 2090 gr.</p><p>This CVA fascicule the fourth in the Greek series includes 108 Attic black-figure skyphoi in the National Museum of Athens. The National Museum's skyphoi represent almost every type produced in the Athenian Kerameikos during the 6th and the 5th centuries B.C. thus offering a good picture of the development of the shape. Most of the 6th-century Attic black-figure skyphoi in the National Museum have been included in this fascicule; on the numerous later mass-produced skyphoi particularky of the CHC Group and of the Ure's Class K 2 only a selection is given while no pinchbase cup-skyphos of Ure's Class R is included here. Skyphoi of these types will hopefully find their place in a future Athens fascicule. The three Gorgoneion skyphoi in the National Museum 237 274 275 have not been icluded here due to the controversial origin of this category of vases. During the course of this study however it has become increasingly obvious to me that these are Attic and not Boeotian. Finally three skyphoi are to be found in earlier CV A volumes: the Heron Class 498 in CVA 1 pl. 4 1-3 and the band-skyphoi 21033 and 1116 published with the Museum's black-figure cups in CVA 3 pl. 47 1-3 and 4-6.</p><p>==========================================================</p><p><em>The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books.</em></p> Academy of Athens hardcover
