Anasazi Places: The Photographic Vision of William Current
xiii138 pages with photographs and index. Quarto 11 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" bound in red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Foreword by Karen Sisheimer. First edition. Willaim Current's first photographic journey to the Southwest came late in his thirties but from that moment he would return again and again throughout his life to experience as if for the first time that magical part of the world. The power of the Anasazi aesthetic the beauty and drama of the sites in which they chose to build their dwellings the demanding difficult but harshly beautiful land unfailingly drew him back. To his eyes the lancscape of the Southwest and the architecture of the "ancient ones" were new and renewing. From the thousands of images Willaim Current made in a career that spanned nearly five decades his images of the Southwest are among his most compelling. THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1966. Hardcover. DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 23pp of photos 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes." ; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover
