Ancient Bundelkhand [Hardcover]
The book is a beautiful narrative of bygone Bundelkhand and verily brings it alive. Based entirely on archaeological remains and epigraphic records of the region, it is an authentic as well as analytical account of Indian’s heartland. It defines Bundelkhand tracing the origin of its name and fixing its frontiers in historical perspective. Its social and political formations have been presented with as much precisions as permitted by the sources, documenting in the process the details of interaction between the Little and Great Traditions. Conceived around the core-theme of Religion, the narrative nowhere separates from contemporary political or social structure and economic life or artistic expression. Sources so far unutilised have been utilises and sites so far unnoticed have been noticed. Incorporating a lot that is worth-recording and remembering about Ancient and Early-Medieval Bundelkhand, the book attempts to cover a period of more than three millennia from the dawn of civilization to the downfall of the Candellas in the fourteenth century A.D. with as many details and as much analysis as can be reasonably accommodated, maintaining the unity of scheme and impression. About The Author:- An upcoming author but a seasoned scholar, Dr. Kirit K. Shah (born Nov. 24, 1945) had a brilliant educational career crowned by a First-class-First M.A., in History and another First-class-Third in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology. After putting in more than a decade of teaching in Madhya Pradesh Educational Service (Collegiate Branch) and completing his Doctorate in 1978, he joined the Department of History, Punjab University, Chandigarh. Currently Reader and Head of the Post-Graduate Department of History, S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Bombay, he has about a dozen published research papers to his credit in provincial and national journals. A life member of Indian History Congress and a member of the Madhya Pradesh Itihasa Parishad, the Punjab History Conference, and the Epigraphical Society of India, Dr. Shah holds a degree in Law as well as in Literature. Life and Conditions of the People of Hindustan [Hardcover]
The author has made a successful attempt to script a social and political life of the Hindustan of the period stretching from 1200-1550 A.D. The author very convincingly brings home the impact of the invasion of the Muslim on the ancient Hindu order which was almost completely destroyed. The book draw a clear picture of how the early Muslim invaders succeeded in leaving foundations which proved strong enough for the later Mughals in raising their glorious edifice. Thereby, the author proves that how Akbar as well as his successors followed the pattern their Turkish and Afghan predecessors had shaped for them. Art and Culture of Himalaya [Hardcover]
A number of factors are responsible for disappearance of different art forms from the Himalayan region. The main among them are social, economical and ecological ones. The cultural invasion from outside is also one of them. During Mughal, Sikh and Rajput periods, the Himalayan art and culture was at its zenith. But during the British period, it took a nosedive. The British were rather pragmatic and matter of factly. They wasted no efforts on vain and inane aesthetics even in the building activities. They raised building rather for public schools, hospitals and other public utilities only. This volume describes the social constitution, its polyandrous marriage systems and peculiar customers and rituals , paintings, sculptures and religious practices of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. This book is a must read for the serious students of art, culture, sociology and anthropology. About The Author:- Brigadier (Dr.) Kuldip Singh Gulia is a noted and active environmentalist. A Ph.D. in Human Ecology of the Himalayan Ecosystems, he has applied himself into sustained research in various facets of Human Ecology. Compilations of the vast storehouse of Human Ecology papers have been published in five volumes under the title “Encyclopaedia of Human Ecology”. His books Human Ecology of Sikkim and Geneses of Disasters, have been widely acclaimed in the intellectual circles for qualitative and analytical excellence. His research papers on human ecosystems of the Himalayas and of the Arid Zone of Indian Thar Desert make interesting studies. The author commanded an Infantry Brigade in Gujrat in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 26 January 2001, and was deeply involved in rehabilitating the suffering population in the affected areas. He successfully commanded his Brigade in Munabao sector of Barmer (Rajasthan) during OPERATION PRAKRAM. Currently appointed as Director of the Pratap Group of Public Schools at Karnal, he continues his Human Ecology related works in the Ecosystems of the Indian Schooling fraternity. K.V. Soundara Rajan
The Ellora Monoliths: Rashtrakuta Architecture in the Deccan [Hardcover]
This book seeks to lift into focus the monolithic legacy of the Rashtrakutas at Ellora, from out of the reason that these monoliths perhaps are best suited to understand and reconstruct the artistic, architectural, traditional, religious and cult interactions and growth-spectra that had taken place in the period from the 8th to the 10th century A.D., very much more eloquently than the study of the cave temple types. Without the stabilizing role of these monoliths, in the over view of the status of temple art, in that period which the Rashtrakutas adorned by their vigorous patronage, eclecticism and multi-pronged political thrusts all over India in their heyday, the cave-art syndrome would tend to cloy even under the best circumstances, as something repetitive, potteries and commandeered which surely it was not. The book deals with the five monoliths at Ellora, in their own historical architectural, iconographic-religious perspectives, and elucidates how they were greatly diversified and pregnant with rich potential for the reconstruction of the are situation; and it compares them also with their compeer monoliths elsewhere in South India, in the same ilk, as in the Pallava and Pandya zones of the past. The chief aim of the book is to give a satisfactory formal picture of these monoliths and to vest them with the credit of being land-marks in the arche-types they sought to represent. Profusely illustrated and with a helpful set of charts and glossary, it is designed to cover a felt need in art studies at Ellora. About The Author:- Dr. K. V. Soundra Rajan (b.1925) took his Post-graduate degree in Sanskrit with Epigraphy form Allahabad University, and was trained and selected in 1947 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, then Director General, Archaeological Survery of India, as scholar, and by the U.P.S.C. as an officer in 1954. Seeing service in several capacities and varying responsibilities from Prehistory to Temple Survey, he retired recently as Additional Director General in the Survey. Widely traveled in the East and West (where he taught at Chicago and Los Angeles Universities) he has ten books to his credit so far on various aspects of history, art and archaeology. President of the Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Research, Vice President of the Indian Archaeological Society, and President-elect of the Epigraphically Society of India, besides being associated with several learned bodies, and a senior research fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research, his wide and versatile interests had earned him a reputable place among the senior archaeologists and art historians, alike of India as abroad, as an ardent scholar, writer and speaker. His other interests include classical music and the stage.
