M. KIRAMI ÖLGEN.
Spatial clustering of notifiable communicable diseases in Turkey.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 80 p. When looking at the distribution of infectious diseases in the world in general, it is seen that there is a distinct difference between developed and developing countries. Morbidity and mortality rates of infectious diseases decrease as the level of development increases. In other words, infectious diseases are mostly diseases of developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to create an effective fighting program against infectious diseases. One of the most important components of effective fighting is the establishment of an effective surveillance system. Monitoring infectious diseases is essential for detecting outbreaks that demand public health response and control measures. Many methods are used for this purpose such as spatial clustering. This is defined as aggregation of disease cases anywhere. Clustering of the disease shows its relation with space. For this reason, cluster analysis is frequently used in epidemiology. It has been the main driving force to carry out the study on this relatively new issue for our country. The book is the product of this work.

MARIO PRASSINOS, (1916-1985).
Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 112 p., color and b/w ills. Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar. The exhibition Mario Prassinos, In Pursuit of an Artist: Istanbul-Paris-Istanbul is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, born into a Greek family of artists in Istanbul, whose artistic career began among the 20th-century Avant-Gardes in Paris. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu with specialists Catherine Prassinos and Thierry Rye as consultants, the exhibition is accompanied by an exhaustive catalogue. Featuring a range of original and striking works by Mario Prassinos, including paintings, book illustrations, fabric samples, and engravings, the catalogue also contains articles written by the artist's daughter Catherine Prassinos, Enis Batur, and Seza Sinanlar Uslu. Catherine Prassinos focuses on her father's relationship with Istanbul and his memories of the city, whereas Enis Batur seeks, in the artist's works, the traces of the childhood he spent in Istanbul and the art milieu he was a part of during his years in France. Carefully examining the unique and outstanding personality of Prassinos, his style that extends from Surrealism to Realism, and his artistic stance against Fascism during World War II, Uslu particularly concentrates on the relationship the artist establishes with memory: "People do not recognize things (or other people), they remember them" says Prassinos, who reflects traces of the past from memory in his works. He presents to viewers the memories he recorded in memory, but could not access or recall exactly and clearly, as portraits that, in his words, could only be "created by a damaged memory.". This exhibition is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, who was born in Istanbul into a Greek-Ottoman family and began his artistic career in Paris, among the 20th century avant-gardes. Bringing together a large selection of his works ranging from paintings and book illustrations to tapestries, portraits, and engravings, the exhibition reveals the striking and unique character of Prassinos and his distinctive style shifting from Surrealism to a more realistic approach. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu, the exhibition welcomes back this original 20th-century artist to his birthplace to Pera, Istanbul, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Mario Prassinos was born in Istanbul in 1916 to a Greek-Italian family that settled in Turkey many years before. In 1922, his family moved to France. He studied at the School of Oriental Languages and the Sorbonne. His first solo exhibition was held in 1938 at the Billiet-Vorms Gallery. Upon his return from the war in which he had fought as a volunteer, he broke away from surrealism and started a figurative period.

MARK DAVID WYERS.
Wicked Istanbul: The regulation of prostitution in the Early Turkish Republic.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 312 p. "It is little known that in the early twentieth century, Istanbul was internationally condemned as a center for prostitution and vilified for its role in the traffic in white women. Through an examination of Turkish and foreign newspapers, Turkish state documents, and the publications of domestic and international organizations, this study explores how the leaders of the newly founded Turkish Republic attempted to negotiate these critiques and how the Ottoman system of state regulated prostitution was transformed in the urban geographies of Istanbul in the 1920s and 1930s. Since studies of urban prostitution cross-cut a number of fields, this work will be a useful reference not only for scholars of Turkish history, but also for research on gender, sexuality, urban studies, and colonialism.".

MARONITE BROTHERHOOD or the ENOSIS: Mich. Constantinidis (Manager), Sohraidis Sounridis, Kyriakhos Franixis et alli.
[MARONITE BROTHERHOOD] Kanonismos tis Adelphotitos ton Maroneiton i 'Enosis'. [i.e. Regulation of the Maronite Brotherhood or the 'Enosis'].
Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Original booklet. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Greek (Modern). 8 p. Heavily stains on pages, tear on lower spine and lower right cover, staple rusted. Fair copy. Extremely rare pamphlet of the regulations of "the Maronite Brotherhood, or Enosis" which consists of 27 articles in modern Greek. The Maronites constitute a Christian group whose members adhere to the Syriac Maronite Church with the largest population around Mount Lebanon in Lebanon. The Maronite Church is an Eastern Catholic sui iuris particular church which is in full communion with the Pope and the Catholic Church, with the right of self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, one of more than a dozen individual churches which are in full communion with the Holy See. The Maronites derive their name from the Syriac Christian Saint Maron, some of whose followers migrated to the area of Mount Lebanon from their previous place of residence which was located around the area of Antioch, and established the nucleus for the Syriac Maronite Church. Saint Maron sent Saint Abraham, often referred to as the Apostle of Lebanon, to convert the non-Christian native population to Maronite Christianity. The name of the Adonis River was changed to Abraham's river by the inhabitants after Saint Abraham preached there. Mass emigration to the Americas at the outset of the 20th century, due to famine mainly resulting from Ottoman blockades and confiscations during World War I, which killed an estimated one third to one half of the population during the Lebanese Civil War between 1975-1990 and the low fertility rate greatly decreased their numbers in the Levant. Maronites today form more than one-quarter of the total population in the Republic of Lebanon. All Lebanese presidents have been Maronites as part of a tradition that persists as part of the National Pact, by which the Prime Minister has historically been a Sunni Muslim and the Speaker of the National Assembly has historically been a Shi'i Muslim. Enosis is the movement of various Greek communities that live outside Greece, for incorporation of the regions they inhabit into the Greek state. Widely known is the case of the Greek-Cypriots for the union of Cyprus into Greece. The idea of enosis is related to the Megali Idea, an irredentist concept of a Greek state which dominated Greek politics following the creation of the modern Greek state in 1830. The Megali Idea was a project which called for the annexation of all ethnic Greek lands, parts of which had participated in the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s but were unsuccessful and remained under foreign rule. In 1821, several parts of Western Thrace rebelled against Ottoman rule, participating in the Greek War of Independence. During the Balkan Wars, Western Thrace was occupied by Bulgarian troops and in 1913 Bulgaria gained Western Thrace under the terms of the Treaty of Bucharest. Following World War I, Western Thrace was withdrawn from Bulgaria under the terms of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and put temporarily under Allied management before being given to Greece at the San Remo conference in 1920. Following the conclusion of World War I, Greece began the occupation of Smyrna and surrounding areas of Western Anatolia in 1919 at the invitation of the victorious Allies of World War I, particularly David Lloyd George the British Prime Minister. The occupation was given official status in the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, with Greece being awarded most of Eastern Thrace and a mandate to govern Smyrna and its hinterland. Smyrna was declared a protectorate in 1922. However, the attempted Enosis failed when the new Turkish Republic prevailed in the resulting Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, after which most Anatolian Christians who had not already fled during the war were forced to relocate to Greece in the 1923 population exchange treaty executed between Greece and Turkey.
