‎BYZANTIUM CONFRONTS THE WEST 1180-1204‎

‎Dustjacket has rubbing to bottom front corner of spine with colour loss and pinhole tear. DJ back panel is lightly browned. Light browning to textblock. ; 406 pages; From 1081 to 1180-- under the three Comneni emperors, Alexius I, John II, and Manuel I- the Byzantine Empire had been a power of major importance, wielding arms and influence in the Holy Land and the Italian penisula. This volume is an examination of the turbulent twenty-four years in which Constantinople, once splendid and celebrated, gradually disintegrated under its last rulers, who had inherited all the problems of an aging social system and possessed few of the talents needed to resolve them. The confrontations between Byzantium and the Western powers became increasingly important and form the major theme of Mr. Brand's study.‎

‎The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, 1816-1882.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 54, [2] p., 53 numerous b/w plts., 46 numerous color plates. The people & places of Constantinople. Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". (From the Kaufmann's preface).‎

I am the blue of hope and the gren of poison; Iam turquoise! Iam capital city fort he masses and for loners. One leg flung across Asia, the other across Europe, I recline across two continents as the seas run through me. I, Istanbul, am fruitful and fertile, the only female to evade menopause for 2700 years! My name is Istanbul!" Istanbul, which is the setting for and the true protagonist of the Buket Uzuner novel "Istanbulians", comes to life as the reader is taken on a historical and cultural excursion to select districts of the city. With"My Name is Istanbul", Buket Uzuner pays loving tribute to Istanbul and her admirers in the form of a "literary monologue".‎

‎BURCU TASKIN.‎

‎Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 512 p. Political representation of minorities in Greece and Turkey: Nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization. What influences the political representation of minorities? Does a non-core group pursue a certain pattern of collective political behavior, or does it have the ability to alter it through struggle with other groups by calculating the existing opportunities and restrictions? This book addresses these important questions by focusing on the history of political representation of the Muslim-Turkish minority in Greece and the Greek-Orthodox minority in Turkey, two communities whose rights are linked to each other via the "reciprocity principle" written in the Lausanne Treaty, signed by two countries that have long-lasting conflicts. Drawing on presentation of related political history, systematic coding of parliamentary debates and works, minority and mainstream newspapers, and elite interviews, the author analyzes and explains ignored linkages between institutions, bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey, and the role of external factors that enable or constrain minority communities access to political life. This study which adopts a historical institutionalism approach and, by integrating theory of both comparative politics and international relations, shows how the minority groups political participation and the effectiveness of their representation has been determined by the triangle of the two states choice of nationalism, reciprocity and Europeanization policies, mainly argues that internal factors such as groups capability for competition and institutional features of the political system in the host-state mostly override states bilateral relations with the kin-state and international factors. As a result, for the Greek and Turkish case, the host-states generally pursue the policy of state-controlled involvement of their minorities in the political life, where the existence of the threatening kin-state and minority groups strong demographic features lead to avoidance of full assimilation and exclusion from political representation.‎

‎Hayali sehir.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 194, [1] p. I have to confess, when I was given the pictures (apologies for not saying ''photographs'', never warmed to this notion) if this book to ''look'', first thing I thought of was a poem by Cemal Süreya, and the book of the same name, Göcebe, where he says Istanbul's minarets are ''lyrical'' and its bridges are ''dialectic'' and the crucial lines; ''You know, at whichever city I am / That is the capital of loneliness''. Süreya differentiates ''city'' from ''capital'' which is actually the city of Istanbul, where s/he becomes more lonely and plain. Just like the alienation, residue, and exceptional expressiveness of migration that makes us think of tales, awakens dreams, and burns like embers inside our bosoms which can also makes us shiver as we watch the pictures. Well, maybe we can not see the sentences of the poverty but as the words forming a lexicon, every possible, ''echo'' (each ''word'') reflects towards our gaze. Reflecting on the dialectic of the 'bridges' Cemal Süreya mentions, just as Ece Ayhan says (Ece's name has to be mentioned, otherwise cemal would be offended, I am sure) the ''arab'' (negative) of the picture, is formed as the background.‎

Though a Greek by birth, Claudian revived Latin poetry with a flair not seen since the Silver Age- and not to be seen again. ‎Sir James W. Redhouse: The making of a perfect orientalist? = Sir James W. Redhouse: Mükemmel bir dogubilimcinin öyküsü? (American Board Library Occasional Publications No: 1).‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English and Turkish. 236 p., 1 b/w portrait of Redhouse frontispiece, b/w ills. Sir James W. Redhouse: The making of a perfect orientalist? = Sir James W. Redhouse: Mükemmel bir dogubilimcinin öyküsü? (American Board Library Occasional Publications No: 1). First published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society in 1979, and now revised and updated, Carter Findley's "The Making of a Perfect Orientalist?" is a scrupulously researched biography of the enigmatic nineteenth-century Turkish language scholar James W. Redhouse. Primarily embodied in two major dictionaries-A Lexicon, English and Turkish (1861) and A Turkish and English Lexicon (1890)-Redhouse's work established a crucial base for the further development of English-Turkish lexicography. Unparalleled at the time, his contributions remain vital today, forming the core of a number of bilingual English-Turkish dictionaries which still bear the Redhouse name. A brief overview of the press that published Redhouse's lexicons, as well as the reminiscences of two editors who helped revise them in the twentieth century, round out this provocative study of the life of James Redhouse.‎

‎Beyond the vessel: Myths, legends, and fables in contemporary ceramics around Europe. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English. 34 4 p., color and b/w ills. Beyond the vessel: Myths, legends, and fables in contemporary ceramics around Europe. Mesher, a new exhibition space initiated by the Vehbi Koc Foundation, opens with its inaugural exhibition "Beyond the Vessel: Myths, Legends, and Fables in Contemporary Ceramics around Europe." The exhibition demonstrates how ancient myths have echoed down through generations, and now form an exciting new wave of contemporary art inspired by the human characteristics and archetypes they represent. It focuses on how clay, often used simply to manufacture vessels and other utilitarian objects, holds the potential of being one of the most refined, yet powerful materials in the hands of artists with exceptional skill and vision, expressing human emotion in the greatest degree of subtlety. In conjunction with the opening, Mesher publishes the exhibition catalogue including articles written by Catherine Milner, the exhibition s co-curator from Messums Wiltshire, Paul Greenhalgh, Director of Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, and Glen R. Brown, Professor of Art History at Kansas State University. Designed by Ayse Bozkurt, the publication features photographs by Sylvain Deleu and Hadiye Cangökce.‎

‎[EARLY BOOK ON THE GENOESE AND THE BYZANTINE BUILDINGS IN CONSTANTINOPLE] Eski Galata ve binalari. [i.e. Old Galata and it's buildings].‎

‎Fine Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 120 p., ills. and many plans, one folded map (50x67 cm) of the Galata quarter surrounded by the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn of Constantinople, including Genoese and Byzantine architectural buildings. First edition of this rare and the early book on old Genoese and Byzantine buildings in the Galata quarter of Constantinople, written by Turkish art historian Celal Esat Arseven (1876-1972). The Galata quarter first appeared in Late Antiquity as Sykai or Syca. By the time the Notitia Urbis Constantinopolitanae has compiled in ca. 425 AD, it had become an integral part of the city as its 13th region. According to the Notitia, it featured public baths and a forum built by Emperor Honorius, a theatre, a portico street, and 435 mansions. It is also probable that the settlement was enclosed by walls in the 5th century. In the 11th century, the quarter housed the city's Jewish community, which numbered some 2,500 people. In 1171, a new Genoese settlement in the area was attacked and nearly destroyed. In 1233, during the subsequent Latin Empire (1204-1261), a small Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Paul was built in place of a 6th-century Byzantine church in Galata. This chapel was significantly expanded in 1325 by the Dominican friars, who officially renamed it the Church of San Domenico, but local residents continued to use the original denomination San Paolo. In 1407, Pope Gregory XII, in order to ensure the maintenance of the church, conceded indulgences to the visitors of the Monastery of San Paolo in Galata. The building is known today as the Arap Camii (Arab Mosque) as per its conversion into a mosque a few years later (between 1475 and 1478) under the rule of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II with the name Galata Camii. In 1261, the quarter was retaken by the Byzantines, but Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos granted it to the Genoese in 1267 in accordance with the Treaty of Nymphaeum. This rare book includes the history and the plans of the buildings such as the Arap Mosque (Church of San Domenico) (1325), Galata Tower (1348), Church of Saint Benoit (1427), Zülfaris Synagogue (1823), Church of Saints Peter and Paul (1843), Camondo Steps (1880), St. George's Austrian High School (1882), Ashkenazi Synagogue (1900), Italian Synagogue (1931), Neve Shalom Synagogue, etc. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Celal Esat Arseven was a Turkish art professor and historian. Born the son of a pasha in Istanbul, Celal Esat Arseven graduated from Besiktas Military School in 1888 and studied drawing at a fine arts school for a year before going to military college. He continued writing and painting while in the army, from which he resigned in 1908. In the years before World War I, he worked at the humor magazine Kalem with Cemil Cem, one of the great early caricaturists of Turkey. Arseven was a writer and artist of diverse talents. In 1918, he wrote a libretto for one of the first Turkish operas and went on to write several musical plays performed at the Istanbul municipal and state theaters. In addition to being an accomplished watercolorist, he was also a professor of architecture and municipal planning at the Istanbul Fine Arts Academy from 1924 to 1941. He published a five-volume art encyclopedia between 1943 and 1954, and many books on Turkish painting and architecture throughout his lifetime. Before his death, he was awarded a doctoral degree by Istanbul University. He was also a delegate to the Turkish Grand National Assembly during its seventh and eighth sessions. (Sources: And, Metin.
