Located in an extraordinary place where the two continents meet, Istanbul has impressive venues that take people back in time with its layers of history. The historical environment of the city reflects a refined life quality and taste and it offers unique treasures to people who can appreciate its value. Understanding and appreciating the secrets of a settlement that has been inhabited continuously from prehistory to modern times necessitates the acquisition of in-depth knowledge, therefore, a closer inspection of it. In recent years, there is an increase in the efforts to raise the awareness of the preservation of the historical monuments with their surroundings in accordance with their original architecture and transfer this awareness to future generations. Preserving of the areas where are currently present and are highly enjoyed by both locals and visitors including the Historical Peninsula, Eyup, Galata, Uskudar, and the Bosphorus and inheriting these areas to future generations are possible only with serious and long term efforts. ‎The dervishes of sovereignty, the sovereignty of dervishes: The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul.= Saltanatin dervisleri, dervislerin saltanati: Istanbul'da Mevlevilik.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (22 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 274 p., color and b/w ills. The dervishes of sovereignty, the sovereignty of dervishes: The Mevlevi Order in Istanbul.= Saltanatin dervisleri, dervislerin saltanati: Istanbul'da Mevlevilik. Due to Unesco's designation of 2007 as the 800th anniversary of Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî's (1207-1273) birth, Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute prepared the exhibition The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul, in order to shed light upon the Sufi history of Istanbul and to commemorate once again the life of Rumi. A mystical institution of medieval Islam at the end of 13th century with respect to its social and cultural roots, the Mevlevî Order assumes its unique place in the world due to Istanbul's close interaction with the Renaissance in Europe and embarks upon a journey that leads from Konya to Istanbul, upon Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of the latter. As part of the historical continuum that lasts for centuries, the Mevlevî Order is transformed from an Eastern mentality to becoming the epitome of an intellectual and spiritual bridge between the East and the West. Following the inauguration of the Galata Mevlevî Lodge in 1491, although the Order finds the opportunity to expand into the Balkan and Mediterranean geography, the Mevlevî sheikh families of Istanbul lay the foundations of the Istanbul Mevlevî Order as of the mid-17th century. Representing the chivalry of word, the universality of heart, and the sanctity of spirit, the Mevlevîs of Istanbul weave the Mevlevî symbolism, which has been shaped in the medieval mystical culture of Islam, into the texture of daily life. In an effort to give spirit to matter, these unique men are the architects of a vast cultural spectrum that ranges from clothing to ordinary objects and from works of art to colloquial language. Brought to life through the collaborative efforts of exhibition curator Ekrem Isin and exhibition consultant Prof. M. Baha Tanman and comprised of levhas (panels), engravings, photographs, and daily objects, which constitute an important part of the visual archives of the Ottoman Empire, The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul exhibition and catalogue is a mystical journey into the ney-playing, whirling dervishes.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 175 p., color ills. "The book brings together the extant mosaics of the Great Palace (Büyük Saray Mosaic Museum), Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum), the Virgin Pammakaristos (Fethiye Museum), St. Saviour in Chora (Kariye Museum) and Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Except for the few panels brought from elsewhere and now kept in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, all of the mosaics in this book were made in Istanbul, known then as Constantinople. Chronologically, the earliest of these mosaics is from the late Roman period and the latest from the early fourteenth century. Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art. In this volume they are grouped under the name of the monument to which they belong. Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. Folio. (32 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 247 p., color and b/w ills. Mesk-i Istanbul. Yenikapi Mevlevihanesi restorasyonu, (2005-2010). A modest zawiyah was established in Istanbul at the end of the 18th century. This lodge, which developed over time and was referred to as "Mevlevîhâne der Bâb-i Cedîd" in certain Ottoman sources, ranked second following the Galata Mevlevi Lodge by its establishment date. This lodge, which however could not resist the impacts of time and only foundations and dilapidated buildings were left behind from its brilliant structure by the time we reached the 21st century, was the very same Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge. With the repair and protection project conducted by Güryapi Restoration during 2005-2010, the Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge did not only return to its past magisterial days, but also started to serve as an international education center within the organization of Fatih Sultan Mehmed Foundation University. The book titled "Yenikapi Mevlevîhanesi Restorasyonu 2005-2010", that has been published with over 250 photographs, archive documents and survey drawings and was prepared under the editorship of Prof. Dr. M. Baha Tanman, sheds light on the most comprehensive repair and protection process in the history of the Mevlevi Lodge and its history when it served as a science, wisdom and guidance center that has led the rearing of artists, composers and performers once upon a time.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 311 p. B/w ills. Nicholas V. Artamonoff left behind a photographic puzzle of over one thousand images. He was a student and engineer, who, while studying and living at Robert College in Istanbul, gained an appreciation for the city's history and culture. With his Rollei camera, he captured Byzantine remains, ntering nooks and crannies of fortifications and cisterns. He strolled through the city in the footsteps of architectural historians and archaeologists who explored and uncovered Byzantine Istanbul. his interests were broad: they ranged from imposing churches to the smallest details of architectural sculpture, from bustling marketplaces to the diligent work of lone craftsmen. The abundance of subjects es the Nicholas V. Artamonoff Collection rich and engaging, providing a glimpse into the diverse urban environment in which he lived, and into the versatile photographer he was.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 168 p., color and b/w ills. Armenian architects of Istanbul in the Era of Westernization.= Batililasan Istanbul'un Ermeni mimarlari. In the era of Westernization, also known as Ottoman Modernization, that took place throughout the entire 19th century and in the early 20th century, transformed the physical appearance of Istanbul. First and foremost the Balians, but also other Armenian architects such as Ohannes Serverian, Mgrdich Charkian, Bedros Nemtze, Mihran Azarian, Hovsep Aznavur, Levon Gureghian, the brothers Aram and Isaac Karakash, Kegham Kavafian, Yetvart Terziyan, Andon and Garabed Tulbendjian, who in earlier periods received their initial training within the industry, but later also graduated from schools in European countries, and ultimately graduated from the School of Fine Arts, played a great role in this transformation. This book is prepared to introduce the Armenian architects who contributed to Istanbul's architectural richness with their works and is the first attempt of its kind. We hope that it will inspire the academic studies in the field to be carried out in the future. The books published in Turkish-English and Armenian-English includes 6 articles written by Edhem Eldem, Afife Batur, Ahmet Ersoy, Alyson Wharton, Elmon Hançer and Lora Baytar; each article has a different approach to the architecture of Istanbul. Moreover, in the book there are more than 100 photos of the architectural structures built by the Armenian architects.‎

Kariye from Theodore Metochites to Thomas Whittemore: One monument, two monumental personalities.= Kariye: Bir anit, iki anitsal kisilik. Theodoros Metokhites'ten Thomas Whittemore'a. [Exhibition catalogue]. Texts by Holger A. Klein, Robert G. Ousterhout, Natalia Teteriatnikov, Dimiter Angelov, Jeffrey M. Featherstone. Displayed at Pera Museum, Kariye, from Theodoros Metokhites to Thomas Whittemore; One Monument, Two Monumental Personalities is comprised largely of objects and documents on loan from abroad, the exhibition narrates the story of Kraiye, one of the globally renowned monuments of Istanbul, as well as the extraordinary tales of two of its 'builders', who lived six centuries apart. At one end stands fellow townsman Theodoros Metokhites, Byzantine thinker, poet and politician, who shaped Kariye at the turn of the 14th century and adorned it with priceless mosaics and frescoes. On the other end is American renaissance man and archaeologist Thomas Whittemore, who passionately and meticulously restored this structure to its former grandeur in the 1940s, consequently bestowing it to the world of culture and art as a museum. In between lies the unconventional story of a structure shaped by the footprints of these remarkable men. The former church of the monastery of Christ of the Chora, better known today as the Kariye Camisi or Kariye Museum, is one of the most impressive Byzantine monuments to survive in the modern city of Istanbul. Founded probably as early as the sixth century, rebuilt by members of the imperial family in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and splendidly restored by the Byzantine humanist, poet, and prime minister Theodore Metochites between 1316 and 1321, the church of the Chora Monastery is today considered one of the most outstanding examples of Late Byzantine art and architecture to survive. While the building itself was already known as the 'Mosaic Mosque' during the nineteenth century, the fame of the church's rich and complex interior decoration rests by and large on an extensive restoration campaign initiated by the American scholar and philanthropist Thomas Whittemore, founder and director of the Byzantine Institute of America from 1930 to his death in 1950. It was the aim of this exhibition, to explore the history of the "Kariye" through its representation over the centuries, and to pay homage to the two men who were responsible for its restoration and conservation in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries respectively: Theodore Metochites and Thomas Whittemore. The exhibition furthermore aimed to celebrate the work of those who have helped to preserve the architecture of the Kariye and its extraordinary cycle of mosaics and frescoes during the 1940s and 1950s.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 392 p., ills. Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium. At the cutting edge of spolia studies, the collected essays in this volume explore diverse forms and types of reuse in Anatolia over centuries through a cross-cultural lens. Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. This unique conference marked ANAMED's tenth anniversary and brought together many prominent scholars and former research center fellows, including the volume's editors.‎

"Sultan Mehmed IV, remembered as Mehmed the Hunter because of his passion for hunting, departed for Edirne in 1657 on a hunting expedition with a large entourage in a display of imperial majesty that has been preserved for history as a visual document in the form of a series of oil paintings commissioned by Claes Rålamb, then the Swedish Ambassador to Istanbul. This almost cinematographic record consisting of a total of twenty paintings is preserved at the Nordiska Museet in Sweden. Sixteen of which returned to Istanbul, as the guests of the Pera Museum, nearly three hundred and fifty years after this event.".‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [xx], [1], 145 p., b/w photos. Fifth Edition. From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul. Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid-XIXth to the XXth century.= Konstantiniyye'den Istanbul'a. XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yüzyila Bogaziçi'nin Rumeli Yakasi fotograflari. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition showcased works by masters of photography, who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. Comprised from a selection of photographs from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photograph Collection and from private collections, it revealed the magnificent structures, daily life and intriguing personalities of an Istanbul past. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city, an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as Ali Sami Aközer, Félice Beato, Guillame Berggren, Abdullah Biraderler, Gülmez Biraderler, Ernest Edouard de Caranza, Sebah & Joaillier, Maurice Meys, Ali Enis Oza, James Robertson and Elisa Pante Zonaro document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, taking us on a pleasurable journey through the photographs they took in the difficult and challenging techniques of the time.‎

"Well-known specialists of Judeo-Spanish and newcomers explore the intersection of language and social identity in the chapters of this book. How did linguistic self-perception shape the thriving Judeo-Spanish speech and print cultures of the Jews in the Balkans, Turkey, and the Levant? Did their attitude toward language influence the crisis that they experienced after ncountering the assertive nationalisms of the twentieth century? Can identification with the language continue in other forms after emigration, or if the language no longer served the purpose of communication among the new generations?".‎
