‎Consuming the Orient.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (26 x 20 cm). In English. 275, [1] p., fully color and b/ ills. Consuming the orient. From travel posters to cigarette packs, from postcards to ornaments, from advertisements to comic strips, the Orient has often been turned by the West into yet another commodity for mass consumption. A closer look at the way in which the Orient was represented in Western consumer societies reveals a number of images and stereotypes revolving around four major themes: exoticism, ethnography, eroticism, and history. From the late nineteenth century to our times, these images have greatly evolved, from rough clichés to more neutral visions. Nevertheless, the attraction exerted by the Orient on the greater public continues unabated, even in Turkey, where almost two centuries of Westernization has ended up creating the very particular phenomenon of "Oriental Orientalism". ‎Long stories: Istanbul in the panoramas of Melling and Dunn.= Uzun öyküler: Melling ve Dunn'in panoramalarinda Istanbul. [In special case].‎

‎New English Paperback. Large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. 113 p., color and b/w ills., 2 folding plates, (400 x 20 cm. and 174 x 20 cm.). Long stories: Istanbul in the panoramas of Melling and Dunn.= Uzun öyküler: Melling ve Dunn'in panoramalarinda Istanbul. [In special case]. Long stories opened a visual window to the city of emperors and sultans, a micro-level study of history that focused on the historical topography of the city. The exhibition was curated by Ekrem Isin with M. Baha Tanman acting as project consultant. ??Panoramas constitute the visual narratives of a city. Emperors and sultans cast their shadows in the images stretching before our eyes; the symbols of power piercing the sky are surrounded by the cultural texture of daily life, as well as the city's architectural composition and nature. The raison d'être of a panorama is to bear witness to the urban image that appears as a protagonist on the stage of history, set against the civilizational décor that the eye perceives at first sight. Long Stories: Istanbul in the Panoramas of Melling and Dunn was not only a visual feast, but also a historical survey, which compelled viewers to reconsider the identity of a city that left its mark on the art of panoramic engraving.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (32 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 232 p., ills. Naks-i Istanbul: Ortaköy Büyük Mecidiye Camii. "He was only 17 when he ascended the throne. However, Sultan Abdülmecid I, who is recalled as the pioneer of modernization trends, father of education reforms, as a matter of fact one of the architects of the Imperial Edict of Reorganization, by his education and rearing, has gone down in history as the individual who has taken the first step to abolish slavery. Istanbul had acquired its most beautiful silhouette by the palaces, manors and mosques that were built during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid. And among these building, there is one mosque that is the pearl of the Bosphorus, which is ascribed as Naks-i Istanbul (Imprint of Istanbul). The Ortaköy Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, built on an embankment towards the sea, is a waterfront mosque that is as beautiful as a princess, and poses as the most favorite Ottoman heritage of the past and the present. The "Naks-i Istanbul Ortaköy Büyük Mecidiye Camii", where the comprehensive repair and restoration works conducted by Gürsoy Restoration during 2011-2014 are told, has been published by Gürsoy Group Publications under the editorship of Dr. Ahmet Uçar. This work, where the detailed information is provided also on the life, personality and reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I by names who are specialized in their fields, has assumed a very important place in literature.".‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 479 p., color and b/w ills., folding maps. 2012 Declaration. The seized properties of Armenian foundations in Istanbul.= 2012 Beyannamesi. Istanbul Ermeni vakiflarinin el konan mülkleri. Project by Mehmet Polatel, Nora Mildanoglu, Özgür Leman Eren, Mehmet Atilgan. Love, teh profound mystery of Creation, lies at the source of the universal principles of natural law. Every human being is bestowed with human dignity. And this human dignity means that every human being, needs and is entitled to as a human right, to live in a state governed by justice. The Organization of the State should afford the individual the right to assembly in order to actualize his or her human rights at more advanced levels; and the right to established legal personalities such as associations or foundations; and the only grounds for any restriction over these rights and freedoms can be the principle of 'not harming others'. The 1936 Declaration was used as a cover-up for the persecution of minority foundations by the Republic of Turkey. The 1913 and 1936 declarations, prepared by all minority foundations upon the request of the state, are officially treated as 'declarations of properties'; whereas teh 2012 Declaration -the most comprehensive balance sheet produced so far of the loss sufferred by Armenian foundations in Istanbul, in a chain of injustice that has continued for almost a century- is a 'declaration of unlawful seizures'. The story told in this book is not the story of structures made of stone or concrete, but the story of human beings. The problem is not about 'properties', but an issue of the sustainability of cultural existence. We know that, as long as it fails to face up to the mindset that alienates the ancient peoples of this country and refuses to see them as equal citizens, Turkey's efforts towards democratization will fall short. With the hope and wish that this work will contribute to transformation.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (24 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 73 p., color and b/w ills. The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.‎

‎Hippodrom / At meydani. A stage for Istanbul's history.= Hippodrom / Atmeydani. Istanbul'un tarih sahnesi. [Exhibition catalogue]. 2 volumes set. Translators: Cem Akas, Jonathan Bardill, Kemal Atakay.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In total as set: 716 p., 1 folding plt. Very heavy volumes. B/w and color ills. In Turkish and English. The exhibition "Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: A Stage for Istanbul's History" takes the visitor on a tour of one of the major architectural achievements of Byzantine Constantinople. Images from the fifteenth and early sixteenth century show the structure of the Hippodrome to have been fairly well preserved at the time of the Ottoman conquest. The construction of Ottoman palaces and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, however, played a major role in the dismantling of the remains of the Hippodrome. Nevertheless, this large open space's association with horses was preserved. It became known as Atmeydani (Horse Square) during the Ottoman era and was used for playing the equestrian game cirit. The Ottomans and the sultans also continued to hold celebrations and public spectacles in the area. Visitors to the Hippodrome today can view its three surviving monuments-the masonry obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Egyptian obelisk-but few can easily imagine the splendor and size of the original Hippodrome that stood for more than eleven centuries."The Hippodrome/ Atmeydani: Istanbul's Stage of History" exhibition almost rebuilds the magnificent Hippodrome decorated with exceptionally beautiful monuments and the Atmeydani of the Ottoman period, and examines the life surrounding them.‎

‎New English Paperback. Color and b/w ills. 670 p. In English and Turkish. The anatomy of a tradition: 150 years of Robert College.= Bir gelenegin anatomisi: Robert Kolej'in 150 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. A very heavy volume. Istanbul Research Institute in collaboration with Robert College presented the exhibition The Anatomy of a Tradition: 150 Years of Robert College 1863 - 2013 at the Istanbul Research Institute on the occasion of 150th anniversary of Robert College, one of the long-established and meritocratic educational institutions of Istanbul. Robert College was founded in Istanbul in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher R. Robert, two men who believed in the universal value of education. It was the first American school to be established in the Ottoman lands, and outside the USA. Surviving revolutions, wars, earthquakes, fires, and epidemics, the College never closed down a single day throughout its 150-year history. Robert College has educated seven prime ministers (four of them Bulgarian), countless statesmen, writers, artists, musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, engineers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. It has been the standard against which other schools measure themselves, even when Robert College itself had the challenge of living up to its own standards, due to lack of funding, inadequate buildings etc. from time to time throughout its history. Curated by Cem Akas, the exhibition shed light on the 150 years of the College, as well as the educational, cultural, social and intellectual life in Istanbul through selected photographs and objects from Robert College Archives, Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library and private collections.‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 254 p., color ills. Industrial archaeology by the Golden Horn. Just as it is privilege to be the General Manager of such an eclectic and wonderful museum, so it has been a privilege to work with so many distinguished contributors, colleagues and consultants in the making of this book. Conceived during our tenth year anniversary festivities, this work is a celebration not only of the richness of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and its collections, but also of the beauty of industrial heritage, the scientific achievements of mankind, and the genius loci of Istanbul and the Golder Horn. In devising the format of this volume, we were determined to do more than a conventional pictorial catalogue of the most important objects in our collections: we wanted also to celebrate their beauty and craftsmanship; to add atmosphere and depth by including contenporary documents and illustrations; and to provide periodic food for thought in the form of essays from eminent contributors.‎
