‎GUILLAUME DELISLE, (1675-1726).‎

‎Very Good French Original decorated map. Hand-coloured. Oblong elephant folio. (54 x 76 cm). In French. Shows Greece, Archipelago, Isle de Candie, Asia Minor (Western side), and East Mediterranean. Delisle od de l'Isle was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. At 27, Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. Delisle's progress culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. He was appointed to teach geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV's son, a task for which he received a salary. Again, his father's reputation as a man of science probably helped the younger Delisle. Historian Mary Sponberg Pedley says, 'once authority was established, a geographer's name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers'. Delisle's case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father's. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire's claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas. Like many cartographers of his day, Delisle did not travel with the explorers. He drew maps mostly in his office, relying on a variety of data. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network to provide him first-hand information. Given his family's and his own reputation, Delisle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were returning from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he also kept current with recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of a source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered. As no one else could validate it, Delisle noted a warning to the viewer that it might not exist. (Source: Wikipedia). Tooley, p.43.‎

‎Gunther, Von Pairis & Alfred J. Andrea‎

‎THE CAPTURE OF CONSTANTINOPLE The Hystoria Constantinopolitana of Gunther of Pairis‎

‎Former owner's bookplate on inner cover. Appears to be bound upside down (as published? ) otherwise Fine. ; The armies of the Fourth Crusade that left Western Europe at the beginning of the thirteenth century never reached the Holy Land to fight the Infidel; they stopped instead at Byzantium and sacked that capital of eastern Christendom. Much of what we know today of those events comes from contemporary accounts by secular writers; their perspective is balanced by a document written from a monastic point of view and now available for the first time in English. The Hystoria Constantinopolitana relates the adventures of Martin of Pairis, an abbot of the Cistercian Order who participated in the plunder of the city, as recorded by his monk Gunther. Written to justify the abbot's pious pilferage of scared relics and his transporting them back to his monastery in Alsace, it is a work of Christian metahistory that shows how the sack of Constantinople fits into God's plan for humanity, and that deeds done under divine guidance are themselves holy and righteous. The Hystoria Constantinopolitana is one of the most complex and sophisticated historiographical work of its time, deftly interweaving moods and motifs, themes and scenes. In producing the first English translation and analysis of this work, Alfred Andrea has captured the full flavor of the original with its alternating section of prose and poetry. His introduction to the text provides background on Gunther's life and work and explores the monk's purpose in writing the Hystoria Constantinopolitana—not the least of which was extolling the virtues of Abbott Martin, who was sometimes accuse of laxity by his superiors in the Order. Gunther's work is significant for its effort to deal with problems raised by the participation of monks in the Crusades, making it a valuable contribution to both crusading and monastic history. The Capture of Constantinople adds to our knowledge of the Fourth Crusade and provides unusual insight into the attitudes of the participants and the cultural-intellectual history of the early thirteenth century. ; Middle Ages Series; 194 pages‎

Smelled by sovereigns, this flower is the symbol of love, of belief and of beauty. It is the richest inspiration for all arts, the sultan of gardens and poetry and the eternal yearning of the nightingale. From the beginning of civilization the rose has adorned the lives of man. For thousands of years countless cultures have turned to the rose as a way of expression, they have held on to it, interpreted it, and enjoyed its beauty while enduring its thorns. Süleyman the Magnificent wrote poetry using the pseudonym Muhibbî and understanding the value of this special flower he placed it on the emerald throne of the meadow. 'The rose sits on the emerald throne and becomes a sultan It gathers all the sweet basil to commence the council.' Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar said of the rose, "The dream of eternity fitted into a moment." This book is written to provide a stroll into the imaginary and actual rose garden of humanity and enable the gathering of a most colourful bunch. Those who turn the pages will relish the rosy world of nature and roses, the history of the rose, the name of the rose and the smell and taste of roses; the rose in art and rosy pictures, rosy tiles and rosy fabrics, rosy carpets, rosy stones and rosy woods, rosy jewellery and rosy glass, the rose in poetry and the rose in music, wearing the rose and the rose gardens of our lives. ‎HAFIZ HÜSEYIN AYVANSARAYÎ, (?-1786).‎

‎[THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK OF ISLAMIC BUILDINGS IN CONSTANTINOPLE] Hadikatû'-l cevâmî. 2 volumes set. [= Hadiqatul-gewami = The garden of the mosques].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary Ottoman quarter burgundy leather bdg. with red boards. Gilt lettering of the title with some decorative elements and four raised bands to the spine. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 volumes set: (310 p.; 264 p). Hadikatû'-l cevâmî. 2 volumes set. [= Hadiqatul-gewami = The garden of the mosques]. Occasionally foxing on boards, slight stains on paper. Otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this rare monumental two-volume set in which an inventory is kept of almost all architectural buildings such as mosques, masjids, fountains, schools, and lodges in Ottoman Istanbul and its surroundings, built since Sultan Mehmet II up to 1768, in a traveler style, by Ayvansarayî, who was hafiz and janissary sekban who lived in the 18th century. "This excellent book has an extremely important place in the literature not only in terms of architectural works and topography but also as a historical source of Constantinople". (Hammer). Long recognized by Turkish scholars as a unique source of Istanbul's architecture and urban form, the text, which was started in 1182 (1768-69) and completed in 1195/1780 and revised and enlarged between 1248/1832-33 and 1253/1838 by Ali Sati, son of Mahmud Efendi, one of the judges of Medina, contains separate descriptions of each of Istanbul's more than 800 mosques, plus accounts of its madrasahs, tombs, tekkes and other monuments. The annotations place each of these buildings within the city's urban plan and provide biographical information about the patrons, architects, and other personalities mentioned in the text. Ayvansarayi's original text, which survives in a number of manuscript copies, was enlarged in the 1830s by Ali Sati Efendi, whose reworking was published in print in 1865 and has thus become the best-known version of the Hadika. (Crane). The author, who first visited the mosques and masjids inside the city walls in a topographic order, then examined the ones outside the city walls, then discussed Eyüp, Galata, both sides of the Bosphorus, Üsküdar (Scutari), Kadiköy (Khalkedon) mosques and masjids. After giving the name of the building in each article, if a mosque was transformed from the church, he noted this issue and recorded the name of the person who had it built. If known, he also indicates where this person's grave is located. Detailed info about the restoration of the architectural building has been restored. And he gives detailed information on additional facilities such as a public fountain, sebil, school, madrasah, and in some cases the people who lie in its burial ground, with brief information about the foundation of this charitable building. ‎Minute book: Istanbul'da isgal günleri, Ingiliz Ticaret Odasi Türkiye ve Balkan Devletleri Istanbul, Ekim 1919 - Haziran 1922. Milli Mücadele yillarinda Ingilizlerin ticari ve siyasi projelerinin ilk defa yayinlanan belgeleri. Translations and annotations by Haluk Kardas, Alp Burak Suer Kardas, Cem Zafer.‎

‎New Turkish Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In Turkish. Atabey 569 ; Blackmer 788. New political and historical atlas of the Ottoman Empire and neighboring states in Europe, Asia and Africa, in forty sheets. Drawn, reviewed and corrected by J.J. Hellert, and accompanied by a historical, geographical and statistical commentary by G. Heck, and Leon Plee. Atlas consists of engraved title page, commentaries and 40 engraved maps, some folded. Includes plans of Constantinople, Dardanelles, important cities of the Empire, and the memorable sieges and battles.‎
