‎Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English. 192 p., ills. Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond. Authors: Su Sultan Akülker, Klaus Belke, Birgitt Borkopp-Restle, Friedrich Hild, Cedric Huss, Johannes Koder, Caroline Mang, Philipp Pichler, Nina Rannharter, Marcell Restle, Lioba Theis, B. Tolga Uyar, Peter Waldhausl... Marcell Restle was born in 1932 in a small town named Bad Waldsee in southern Germany and studied art history, Byzantine studies, and the history of Christianity at the universities of Tu?bingen and Munich. The classes Restle took from German and Turkish professors at Istanbul University, where he studied for a year, opened up new horizons for him. The studies he made of Islamic, Seljuk, and, especially, Ottoman art and architecture, as well as of Byzantine art; the classes he taught at the universities of Vienna and Munich on these topics; and the countless study trips he made around the Eastern Mediterranean, including to Istanbul and Anatolia, made him an expert in the field of architecture, especially in the systematic documentation of buildings. "Archival Memories" on the one hand informs viewers about how a researcher organized his working day, how he systematically allotted his time, and what methods he used in the pre-digital age. On the other hand, it aims to present from retrospective perspectives the states of numerous cultural assets, most of which remain today only as memories within urban structures.‎

Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Italians in Anatolia in 12th - 15th centuries. Symposium Proceedings.= Orta Çag'da Anadolu'da kültürel karsilasmalar: 12-15. yüzyillarda Anadolu'da Italyanlar. Sempozyum bildirileri. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 254 p., b/w and color ills. Images of Üsküdar from the past. The five star book.= Geçmisten Üsküdar suretleri. Besibiryerde. Compiling the visual odyssey of our beloved borough of Üsküdar, spanning 500 years from the 1420s up until the 1950s, "The golden city" album aims at presenting the pertinent documents of the historical heritage that Üsküdar possesses. The paintings, etchings, photographs, postcards, and maps incorporated into the book all function to adequately and efficiently reflect and convety a semblance of the likeness of the past times pertaining to the "Eternal city" Üsküdar (Scutari) the our present day, and carry them forward to to posterity. Each page of this book-album ensures the remembrance of an exalted glory and an enduring magnificence of the bygone epochs, and, in a sense, successfully attempts to recreate the memory of a living metropolis. Each visual element and image featuring in the album attests to a diverse and rich accumulation, amassed over hundreds of years, as this impressive and exhilarating pictoral feast defines the magical and enchanted atmosphere of Üsküdar, standing out prominently as a "Dreamland" or the "City of fairy-tales and fantasies. ‎Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. Wall, arch, dome: Byzantine Istanbul in the eyes of Ottoman photographers.= Sur, kemer, kubbe: Osmanli fotografçilarinin gözüyle Bizans Istanbulu. [Exhibition catalogue]. Text: Samih Rifat. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Istanbul's Byzan-tine monuments, as captured by Ottoman photographers, is their role as priceless documents in the city's history. The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.‎

The religious sites of the Chiristian peoples who worshipped in the city gives one the opportunity to do just that. Some of these churches are still active, some are in ruins, and some have been turned into mosques - but they all carry the scent of histor within their stones, their domes and arches, their altars, their chapels. Edith Oyhon and Bente Etingu have wandered in the streets of Istanbul searching for traces of time past. This book isa journey into those worlds that they have discoverd: Stories of how some of the churches dating back to Byzantine times were built, the Protestants and others. Churches in Istanbul is a guide that will encourage the reader- wanderer to seek further in a city that hides much more!".‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 276 p., color and b/w ills. "Zeytinburnu: A quarter monography: A common but wrong belief about the Zeytinburnu District is that the settlement in this area has begun with the slum formation and has had a past of about thirty of forty years. However, the studies carried out show that the settlement in the area has a very old past. This area was very important militarily and religiously the Byzantine Istanbul, known as the 'Second Romeî'. Among the historical structures taken over in this period by our district that was on the passage way of the Byzantine Army were Yedikule Fort to which Sultan Mehmed II Conqueror made some editions and Baliklama Ayazma (Holy Spring) and Church. Balikli Spring first became the subject of an epic on the Byzantine enthronement Of Leon I and became known with its modern name owing to an epic that is rumored to have been created during the conquest of Istanbul (Constantinople). Also, we can wholeheartedly say that our Zeytinburnu District has a rare wealth in terms of Islamic mysticism. Dervish Lodges within the boundaries of our district such as Perisan Baba, Hadji Mahmud Aga, Seyyid Nizam and Merkez Effendi Dervish lodges, as well as Yenikapi Mevlevi House, mentioned as a music academy, have been occasion for the education of extremely important figures of our mystic history.".‎
