‎Die Nazis haben bereits vor Beginn des Ostfeldzuges gegen die Sowjetunion allein bei der Eroberung von Polen 2,5 Mio. Juden (d.h. fünfmal so viele wie im Deutschen Reich) vorgefunden. Gleich nach der Besetzung des Landes im September 1939 begannen sich Ghettos auszubreiten, die schließlich zum Symbol für jüdisches Leben während des Holocausts werden sollten. Über die Ursachen für die Entstehung von Ghettos in den besetzten Ländern ist bislang kaum geforscht worden. Warum griffen die Nationalsozialisten auf die historische Bezeichnung ?Ghetto? zurück? Warum nahm sie in der Verwaltungspraxis der Deutschen höchst unterschiedliche Bedeutungen an? Wie veränderte sich die Bezeichnung während des Holocausts, und welche Funktionen hatten die Ghettos? Warum blieb das Phänomen nahezu ausschließlich auf Ost(mittel)europa begrenzt?
