(Quelle Wikipedia)‎

‎SHIRE ERETS YISRA’EL, MI-TA’AM HISTADRUT HA-MAKABI BE-GERMANYAH VE-HISTADRUT HE-HALUTS BE-GERMANYAH [SHIRI ERETZ]‎

‎Original Paper Wrappers with paper label as issued, 12mo, 208 pages, 17 cm. In Hebrew. Early post-war re-issue of this Nazi-era imprint, originally published by the Judischer Verlag in Berlin in 1935. Title translates as “Songs of Israel: Maccabi Union of Germany on behalf of the Pioneer Association in Germany. ” In Hebrew. Lyrics (romanized) --also printed as vocalized text in Hebrew script. Anthology of 230 zionist songs. Includes unacc. Melodies. Published by the Yudisher Ferlag of Berlin, under the auspices of Hechalutz and Maccabi World Union. “Jakob Schönberg was born in Fürth, Bavaria on September 8, 1900. His father, David Schönberg, was chazzan (cantor) at the Claus-synagoge in Fürth. ... Schönberg apparently earned his living during Germany's Weimar Republic (1919-1933) as a pianist, music critic, conductor and composer. He wrote articles for the Nürnberger Zeitung and served as a musical consultant for Bavarian Radio in Munich. Bavarian Radio performed some of his orchestral compositions. He also worked in films as a "musical conductor and illustrator" and some of his film music was published by Schott's Söhne, Mainz, and Hawkes and Son, London. Schönberg was interested in composing instrumental music — especially orchestral. His first orchestral work, Prelude Symphonique, premiered in 1923. ... His style of composition took a decidedly Jewish turn after the Nazis took power in 1933, and Jewish musicians could no longer be employed by Germany's state-supported cultural institutions. In 1934 Schönberg transcribed the folk songs and dance tunes of several halutzim (pioneers) visiting Germany from Palestine. The following year he published Shire Erets Yisrael (Songs of the Land of Israel) , an anthology containing 230 Hebrew songs (Berlin: Jüdischer Verlag, 1935) . From this time until, at least, when he left Germany, these Israeli melodies would figure prominently in Schönberg's work. He set several of them for voice with piano and voice with flute and viola. His Suite für Orchester, 3 Sätze utilizes a Horra melody from the anthology. Schönberg's orchestral Horras appear to have been extremely popular in Nazi Germany, and were performed numerous times by the Jüdischer Kulturbünde between 1936 and 1938, in both Berlin and Frankfurt-am-Main” (Jakob Schonberg Collection; JTSA) . Subjects: Zionism - Songs and music. Songs, Hebrew - Palestine. Jews - Palestine - Music.. Lyrics (romanized) also printed as vocalized text in Hebrew script. Includes unaccompanied melodies. ‎Schreiben oder Leben. Jorge Semprun. Aus dem Franz. von Eva Moldenhauer 2. Aufl.‎

‎The Long Voyage. Transl. from the French by Richard Seaver.‎

‎Penguin Books, 1997. 236 S.; 19,5 cm; kart.‎

‎Gutes Ex.; Seiten gering nachgedunkelt. - Englisch. - Jorge Semprún Maura (* 10. Dezember 1923 in Madrid; ? 7. ... (wiki) // A lyrical, honest, and heartbreaking account of a Holocaust journey / Gasping for breath in a cattle truck occupied by 119 other men, a young Spaniard captured fighting with the French Resistance counts off the days and nights as the train rolls slowly but inexorably toward Buchenwald. On the five seemingly endless days of the journey, he has conversations that send him into daydreams about his childhood or set him fighting Resistance battles over again. He describes the temporary holding prison where the names of distant concentration camps are spoken of in whispers-their individual horrors discussed, rated, contemplated. In chilling detail, the trip with those 119 men-some fearful, some defiant-is evoked, along with his own confusion, anger, and bitter resignation. When at last the fantastic, Wagnerian gates to Buchenwald come into sight, the young Spaniard is left alone to face the camp. The Long Voyage represents both an internal and external journey for Jorge Semprun. It is a profound literary account, fierce and moving. ? (Verlagstext) ISBN 0141180293‎

… (Verlagstext) ISBN 0141180293‎

‎Sephiha, Vidal‎

‎L’AGONIE DES JUDEO-ESPAGNOLS‎

‎Softcover, 8vo, 131 pages, illustrations, 20 cm. In French. SUBJECT (S) : Descriptor: Sephardim -- History. Sefarades -- Histoire. Bibliography: pages 127-129. Discography: pages 130-131. Filmography: page 131. Sephiha (1923–) is a “Judeo-Spanish linguist and activist. Sephiha was born in Brussels to a Sephardi family from Istanbul. During the German occupation of Belgium, he was arrested in 1943 and deported to Auschwitz in September. He survived the death camp, where his father perished. After liberation, he resumed his studies in natural sciences, graduating in 1948 and working as a chemical engineer; however, he eventually decided to study and defend the linguistic and cultural heritage of his community. His understanding of the language is based on a clear distinction between its two fundamental modalities. Sephiha, who retired in 1991, was instrumental in securing academic acceptance and public support for the “agonizing language” he spoke and taught. Besides his scientific and popular publications, from 1972 he launched several calls for revival of the language and in 1979 founded the “Association Vidas Largas for the Defense and Promotion of the Judeo-Spanish Language and Culture, ” which organizes educational work in Sephardi communities as well as the rescue of literary, musical, and architectural treasures. Judeo-Spanish has since been included among the recognized minority languages of France. In 2003, Sephiha inaugurated at the Auschwitz site a memorial in honor of the 160, 000 Judeo-Spanish victims of the Holocaust” (Wilke in EJ 2007) . Bumped corners and edges. Wear to binding. ‎Branded by the Pink Triangle‎

‎efore the rise of the Nazi party, Germany, especially Berlin, was one of the most tolerant places for homosexuals in the world. Activists such as Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein campaigned openly for the rights of gay men and women and tried to repeal the law against homosexuality. But that all changed when the Nazis came to power; existence for gay people became fear-filled. Raids, arrests, prison sentences and expulsions became the daily reality. When the concentration camps were built, homosexuals were imprisoned along with Jews and any other groups the Nazis wanted to suppress. The pink triangle sewn onto prison uniforms became the symbol of the persecution of homosexuals, a persecution that would continue for many years after the war. A mix of historical research, first-person accounts and individual stories brings this time to life for young readers. Stories of bravery in the face of inhuman cruelty, friendship found in the depths of despair in the camps and the perseverance of the human spirit will educate and inspire.155p. illus Book‎

‎Sevillias, Errikos [Trans. Nikis Stavroulakis]‎

‎Athens - Auschwitz‎

‎Moving personal testimony of the way the Jews were deported from Greece to concentration camps during the Nazi occupation. Errikos Sevillias was born in Athens in 1901 into a Sephardic family. He learned how to work in leather as a child and opened his own leather workshop when he was 16. From 1919 until 1923 he served in the Greek army, for three years fighting in Asia Minor. After the war he reopened his workshop, married, and had a daughter. Life, as he writes, "went along well" until he experienced "an inexplicable and unexpected great adventure," meaning Auschwitz. Errikos Sevillias was killed in Athens by a motorcycle in 1974, when he was 73 years old. The manuscript of this book was found among his papers after he died. He describes the appalling events at Auschwitz with extraordinary calm, saying merely that he couldn't understand "what they wanted in doing such an unjust and evil thing." His simple statements of events give the clearest possible image of the indescribable. The manuscript was translated by Nikos Stavroulakis, who also has provided an extremely useful historical outline of the Jewish presence in Greece with a description of the occupation and final solution. 125p.+ plates Book‎
