Vu d'un certain angle, il y a là une opération absolument magique. » (in Un beau ténébreux) Louis Poirier n'était pas encore Julien Gracq lorsqu'il s'initia, vers l'âge de treize ans, aux échecs. Or, l'attrait passionné qu'il ne cessera de leurs porter s'est volontairement tenu dans la sphère de la théorie. « J'ai dû tout aux livres, et presque rien à la pratique du jeu, restée chez moi très intermittente...». Loin d'enrichir sa bibliothèque par simple manie de collectionneur, il était un lecteur « crayon en main » comme en témoignent les petites annotations en marge de ses livres consacrés aux échecs ou les feuillets manuscrits couverts d'analyses, de problèmes ou de coups joué. « Je suis un joueur médiocre, ou plutôt un lecteur de parties [...]. Cela se rattache sans doute au plaisir que je prends aux ouvrages de stratégie : j'ai du goût pour la stratégie en chambre. » Composée en majorité d'ouvrages classiques qui visent à former les joueurs d'un point de vue stratégique, à approfondir leur capacité d'analyse et à arrondir leur style, cette bibliothèque traduit des choix où ne figurent presque aucun livres « légers », de ceux qui visent à amuser l'amateur du jeu, tels que des livres sur les pièges d'ouvertures ou des anthologies de coups spectaculaires. Livres difficiles, au sens où ils requièrent du lecteur une attention très soutenue, encore appelés « livres à problèmes», ceux qui entrèrent dans sa collection exposent des positions particulières avec une consigne telle que « les blancs jouent et gagnent » et demandent au cerveau du joueur une sorte d'effort digne de l'haltérophilie, mal nécessaire pour enrichir sa capacité de calcul et d'analyse. Louis Poirier s'imposait cette discipline, assez remarquable voire exceptionnelle chez un joueur amateur. Souvent, attaquait-il des problèmes manifestement au-dessus de son niveau de jeu comme en témoignent les notes qui nous sont parvenues, présentant des solutions en majorité fausses. Tout indique qu'il notait soigneusement la solution entrevue et, évitant la tentation de vérifier la solution du livre, passait au problème suivant. « Je n'ai jamais été initié, dira-t-il, au jeu d'échecs. J'ai tâtonné dans leur direction de moi-même, sans guide, mais difficilement, obstinément je leur ai appartenu dès le début sans que j'y eusse la moindre aptitude, comme la boussole au pôle magnétique [...].» Louis Poirier commença à pratiquer le jeu des échecs vers l'âge de treize ans. Plus tard, étudiant boursier à l'Ecole normale supérieure, il voyage en compagnie de son condisciple Henri Queffelec à Budapest. Ce dernier explique comment il y avait croisé en 1931, le grand joueur d'échecs Lagos-Steiner : « Poirier le connaissait de renom. Il était déjà passionné d'échecs. il eut avec lui un long a parte. Je l'admirais du coin de l'oeil. les deux hommes n'échangeaient que des phrases très courtes, isolées par des silences au cours desquels ils ne se regardaient pas. On sentait qu'ils réfléchissaient ensemble. ils avaient mieux à faire que de s'épier. » Jeune professeur à Quimper, il participe aux tournois d'échecs de Brest, Lorient et anime le cercle d'échecs de Quimper où sera invité le grand maître Znosko-Borovsky. Au soir de sa vie, l'auteur reviendra sur son rapport particulier aux échecs : « Je me suis beaucoup intéressé au jeu d'échecs, par périodes, qui reviennent de façon quasi cyclique. He was the foremost figure amongst the hypermoderns. Born in part of the Russian Empire the Jewish German-speaking Nimzowitsch came from a wealthy family where he learned chess from his father who was a merchant. In 1904 he travelled to Berlin to study philosophy but set aside his studies soon and began a career as a professional chess player that same year. He won his first international tournament at Munich 1906.3 Then he tied for first with Alexander Alekhine at Saint Petersburg 1913/14 the eighth All-Russian Masters' Tournament. During the 1917 Russian Revolution Nimzowitsch was in the Baltic war zone. He escaped being drafted into one of the armies by feigning madness insisting that a fly was on his head. He then escaped to Berlin and gave his first name as Arnold possibly to avoid anti-Semitic persecution. Nimzowitsch eventually moved to Copenhagen in 19225 which coincided with his rise to the world chess elite where he lived for the rest of his life in one small rented room.6 In Copenhagen he twice won the Nordic Chess Championship in 1924 and 1934.
