Le sue pagine sono intrise di profondo ottimismo, in quanto per Hartlib tutto è progetto perché tutto è realizzabile e nulla è impossibile, complice anche l'origine evangelica del termine. Macaria si conferma come la terra felice per antonomasia secondo una prospettiva evidente in altri testi simili, ma anche il forte senso comunitario di Andreae: "in questa repubblica nessuno ha solo i genitori, ma lo Stato stesso è genitore" e di More: "l'intera isola è come una sola famiglia". Il lettore scoprirà il regno dei sogni, la città della filosofia, mistica e filantropica, i cui abitanti possiedono la pietra filosofale, come emerge dalle lettere del Fridwald, e si dedicano a esperimenti farmacologici, realizzando di fatto una sorta di comunità o di circolo alchemico regolamentato dalle Leges Antilianae.

Ultimo sultano asceso al trono nel 1876, Abdul dimostrò di poter essere un sovrano illuminato, concedendo la Costituzione e il primo Parlamento turco, ma presto manifestò disastrose manie di grandezza, provocando una guerra fatale con la Russia e trasformandosi in un tardivo simbolo di dispotismo. Vittima dei consiglieri religiosi e degli intrighi di palazzo, il reggente si alienò la simpatia delle altre potenze straniere - a parte la Germania di Guglielmo II -, inimicandosi in patria il gruppo rivoluzionario dei Giovani Turchi, che lo deposero nel 1908 sancendo il declino di un impero centenario.
