Scritti sulla guerra (1745-1748)
br. Il volume raccoglie gli scritti di David Hume sulla guerra: "L'insurrezione giacobita del 1745 e la difesa del prevosto di Edimburgo", "L'incursione britannica del 1746 sulla costa francese" e "La spedizione del 1748 presso le corti di Vienna e Torino". I primi due fanno luce sulla guerra civile e sul conflitto Inghilterra-Francia, mentre il terzo riproduce integralmente un diario di viaggio tra le capitali europee settecentesche in tempo di guerra. Tali testi, da cui emerge lo sguardo realista e a tratti ironico di Hume sulla "miserabile guerra", si collocano in una fase decisiva per lo sviluppo del suo pensiero politico e ci consegnano una figura inedita del filosofo come cultore dell'arte bellica, esperto di strategie militari, ufficiale amico di generali e ministri, osservatore acuto delle personalità dei sovrani e delle dinamiche internazionali.
