Morris Talpalar 1900 1979
The Sociology of Colonial Virginia
xi371 page. Octavo 8 1/2" x 5 3/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with dark blue lettering to spine with pictorial to cover in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Morris Talpalar May 28 1900 – July 7 1979 was an American sociologist. He was the author of The Sociology of Colonial Virginia 1960 and The Sociology of the Bay Colony 1976 covering American history of the period between 1600 and 1770. Among Talpalar's merits is his emphasis in describing characters and human values predominant in the colony and how they influenced the ideological background for the war. He supported that a change in these values was determinant for the establishment of slavery in Virginia when the original Puritan rulers that dominated the political scene before 1660 were replaced by the rules of Cavaliers. This transition was the basis for the shift from traditional indentured servitude to slavery temporarily versus permanent unfree labor that was implemented in the colony.56 All these contributions have been considered as unique for their objectivity and originality. SMITH Howard Malcolm b. 1900.
Soil Survey of Polk County Texas. Series 1903 Number 36.
Washington D. C.: U. S. Government Printing Office 1935. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. Large fine folding chromolithographed "Soil Map: Polk County Texas" one or two new folds 1 in-text map. Original publisher's printed wrappers with map of Texas on rear cover small chip from upper corner of rear wrapper lightly browned. Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription to front cover. First edition. With a very large folding map in full color showing the different types of soil in Polk County Texas. "Creation of the Division of Agricultural Soils in the United States Department of Agriculture USDA in 1894 marked the beginning of a national commitment to soil science and soil survey activities. By 1899 soil surveyors had commenced field investigations for the first USDA soil surveys; one century later soil surveys have been published for most counties in the United States. The surveys - inventories consisting of narrative descriptions tables and maps - include a wealth of interpretive information about soil characteristics and properties and about their limitations and potentials. These interpretations of how soils respond to different uses assist land users in making appropriate decisions. And while Congress and the federal government have supported the soil survey effort to help guide agricultural development surveys have side application in a variety of environmental and land management uses. The development of the national soil survey program grew out of the intellectual curiosity and personal ambition of two men in particular Charles W. Dabney Jr. and Milton Whitney. But it was research at state agricultural experiment stations that created the favorable climate for Dabney's and Whitney's successes. This state-level research grew from a desire by state agricultural leaders to understand their soils and the relationship of the characteristics of those soils to plant growth. Ultimately they believed knowledge would contribute to a healthy agricultural economy" Helms ed. p. 1. Douglas Helms et al. eds. "Profiles in the History of the U.S. Soil Survey.". Washington, D. The maps show the distribution of the family across Australia New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands and provide a detail of the islands between Celebes and New Guinea. The plates are described by Sitwell as Keuleman's 'best work' and represent 16 species for the first time. In his introduction the author explains his interest in the family Loriidae 'a very attractive group of rather small birds' varying in dimension 'from the size of a Turtle-Dove to about that of a Sparrow' and consisting 'of 75 more or less distinct species. The family is remarkable for its brilliancy and gay coloration' and its friendliness: 'Some of them . will spontaneously approach human dwellings and most of them make excellent pets.' Keulemans began his career as a taxidermist providing stuffed birds to the State Museum of Natural History at Leiden. The director of that museum encouraged Keulemans to pursue his love of natural history where he obtained a scientific appointment after an expedition to West Africa in 1865 and 1866. His accomplishments in illustration came to the notice of Richard Bowdler Sharpe later a director of the British Museum who encouraged him to move to England. Keulemans quickly achieved wide recognition and established himself as the most popular bird artist of the late Victorian period. He regularly provided illustrations for "The Ibis" and "The Proceedings of the Zoological Society". He illustrated many important bird books including Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" 1873 Shelley's "Monograph of the Sun-Birds" 1876-1880 William Vincent Legge's "Birds of Ceylon" 1880 Daniel Giraud Elliot's "Monograph of the Hornbills" 1887-1892 Richard Bowdler Sharpe's "Monograph on Kingfishers" 1868-1871 Henry Seebohm's "Monograph on Thrushes" 1902 and Osbert Salvin's "Biologia Centrali-Americana" 1879-1904.
