Engraved by John Andrew & Son." "This work is called a 'romance' because the incidents characters time and scenery are alike romantic. And in shaping this old tale the Writer neither dares nor desires to claim for it the dignity or cumber it with the difficulty of an historic novel. And yet he thinks that the outlines are filled in more carefully and the situations however simple more warmly colored and quickened than a reader would expect to find in what is called a 'legend'. And he knows that any son of Exmoor chancing on this volume cannot fail to bring to mind the nurse-tales of his childhood-- the savage deeds of the outlaw Doones in the depth of Bagworthy Forest the beauty of the hapless maid brought up in the midst of them the plain John Ridd's Herculean power and memory's too congenial food the exploits of Tom Faggus." "This biography of Catherine of Aragon first queen of Henry VIII; mother of Mary I is the outgrowth of studies in the early history of diplomacy. Turning over the letters of Spanish ambassadors at the Tudor court it was borne in upon me that the Queen Catherine they were talking about was a different person more cultured and thoughtful more forceful and decisive than the one I had read about elsewhere and as I followed the history of the Spanish embassy in England I began to realize that the key to its activities and to much of what went on in England for a third of a century lay in the personality and the decisions of this queen. Schach-Olympia Munchen 1936 I. Teil & II. Tiel: Im Auftrage Des Grobebeaustschen
Leipzig: Druck von Metzger & Wittig 1937 2 volumes: 1764 ad pages with diagrams tables and plates; 1924 ad pages with diagrams tables plates and index. Octavo 8 1/2" x6" issued in beige cloth with blue lettering to spine and front cover. Volumes 6 & 7 from the 1936 Olympics coverage. Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5534. 1st edition. The German Chess Federation wanted to organize an Olympiad as a counterpart to the Olympic Games at Berlin in 1936. Munich was chosen to be the venue - for the local chess club was celebrating its centenary - and teams of eight plus two reserves were invited to take part. But since the German Chess Federation was not a member of FIDE the event was not recognized as belonging to the official series of Olympiads. Twenty-two countries entered for this mammoth tournament and of these only Spain later withdrew. However the dates coincided with the international tournament at Nottingham with the result that not only was the English team unable to enter but also a number of grandmasters were absent from the top boards of their respective countries. The favorites seemed about equally handicapped by this. In all the history of chess there had been very few international matches in which the number of players on each side exceeded that in normal Olympiads. Accordingly it was difficult to compare the teams and to size up their chances beforehand. The following were considered to have good prospects of gaining a high place: Hungary a solied powerful side led by grandmaster Maroczy; the German team which had prepared itself thoroughly for this event; and countries such as Poland Sweden Yugoslavia Czechoslovakia and Austria whose chess traditions were strong. The Olympiad opened on August 17th with 208 participants the Dutch and Brazilian teams had only nine players. A chess tournament on such a scale had never been witnessed before 1680 games were played! and only the most recent Olympiads have surpassed it in size. From the very beginning the struggle was fierce. Moreover owing to the numerous adjourned games and the bye caused by the odd number of teams even those 'on the inside' found it hard to assess the situation clearly. For two-thirds of the distance the lead altered between German and Poland with the Czechs and Yugoslavs in hot pursuit. Hungary had the free day early on in the fourth round and for that reason did not figure among the chief pace-makers at first. Nevertheless the leaders had the disquieting feeling that their dangerous rival was not far behind. The Hungarians gaining one sound victory after another gradually overcame every obstacle. As the teams in front had the bye so their advantage disappeared until at last in the sixteenth round when Germany were free Hungary assumed the lead. From then onwards they held it securely entering the last round four points ahead of the field; a modest win over Norway was sufficient to give them first place. Hungary's achievement in defeating in an all-play-all tournament all the opposition without conceding a single drawn match remained unequaled in the Olympiads until 1960. Poland finished second and Germany third. Octavo 9" x 6" issued in blue with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria on the cover. Translated and Edited by Celsus Kelly . Works issued by the Hakluyt Society Second Series Numbers 126 and 127. First editions.Pedro Fernandes de Queirós Spanish: Pedro Fernández de Quirós 1565–1614 was a Portuguese navigator best known for his involvement with Spanish voyages of discovery in the Pacific Ocean in particular the 1595-1596 voyage of Alvaro de Mendaña de Neira and for leading a 1605-1606 expedition which crossed the Pacific in search of Terra Australis. In 1598 Queirós returned to Spain and petitioned King Philip III to support another voyage into the Pacific. A devout Catholic Queirós also visited Rome in 1600 where he obtained the support of the Pope Clement VIII for further explorations. He greatly impressed the Spanish Ambassador in Rome the Duke of Sesa who described him as a “man of good judgement experienced in his profession hard working quiet and disinterested.†While in Rome Queirós also first wrote his Treatise on Navigation as a letter to the king further reinforcing his reputation as a navigator. In March 1603 Queirós was finally authorized to return to Peru to establish another expedition with the intention of finding Terra Australis the mythical "great south land" and claiming it for Spain and the Church. Queirós's party of 160 men on three ships San Pedro y San Pablo 150 tons San Pedro 120 tons and the tender or launch Los Tres Reyes left Callao on 21 December 1605. In January 1606 the expedition discovered Henderson Island and Ducie Island. In May 1606 the expedition reached the islands later called the New Hebrides and now the independent nation of Vanuatu. Queirós landed on a large island which he took to be part of the southern continent and named it Australia del Espiritu Santo. In some his later memorials notably the Eighth this was altered to Austrialia del Espiritu Santo The Austrian Land of the Holy Spirit to flatter King Philip III who was of the House of Austria. The island is still called Espiritu Santo. Here he stated his intention to establish a colony to be called Nova Jerusalem. Queirós's religious fervour found expression with the founding of a new Order of Chivalry the Knights of the Holy Ghost. The Order’s purpose was to protect the new colony. However within weeks the idea of a colony was abandoned due to the hostility of the Ni-Vanuatu and to disagreements among the crew. After six weeks Queirós's ships put to sea to explore the coastline. On the night of June 11 1606 Queirós in the San Pedro y San Pablo became separated from the other ships in bad weather and was unable or so he later said to return to safe anchorage at Espiritu Santo. He then sailed to Acapulco in Mexico where he arrived in November 1606. In the account of Diego de Prado y Tovar which is highly critical of Queirós mutiny and poor leadership is given as the reason for Queirós's disappearance. Two weeks later his second-in-command Luis Váez de Torres after searching in vain for Queirós and assuming his ship was wrecked left Espiritu Santo. Torres successfully reached Manila the center of the Spanish East Indies in May 1607 charting the southern coastline of New Guinea on the way and in doing so sailing through the strait that now bears his name.Condition:Jacket corners chipped edges with some small tears spine extremities lightly rubbed and age darkened else very good in like jackets.
