‎Sophie Legros (1976), eerste laureaat van de 'Prix de la cr ation' van de stad Luik in 2014, is een beeldend kunstenares en kunstdocente die zich sedert meerdere jaren toelegt op de verkenning van twee en drie dimensies in de kunst. Zonder gebruik te maken van een ladder, klimt de kunstenares tot boven in haar installaties om daar stukken ruw of geschilderd hout te bevestigen. Zo transformeert ze haar installaties - voornamelijk in gerecycleerd hout -, tekeningen, foto's en schilderijen tot performatieve werken. But a year has passed and on it goes, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes. Finds have a strange hold over us. There?s a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there?s too much of ourselves in the object already. We don?t deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display. The more trash we?ve dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. We?ve had to make our hands dirty and?like any good romance?half the pleasure lies in the hunt. So we go hunting for crap that?s out of place. Crap that becomes a find, simply because it was lost. A diamond is nothing very special in a jewellery store, but it?s everything when found among discarded fish. Yet maybe the real reason for this endless trawlings for trinkets is another story altogether. Not that of a seventeenth-century mariner tossing a coin into the Scheldt to buy a safe passage, but the belief that we're not the ones that find the perfectly rounded rock, it's the pebble that finds us. Naast schilderen beoefende hij ook andere technieken zoals glasraam, fresco, gravure en lithografie. Hij volgde een opleiding aan de stedelijke academie van Bergen en de Stedelijke Academie van Schone Kunsten te Brussel. Hij volgde les bij Constant Montald, Emile Fabry en Jean Delville en werd be nvloed door het symbolisme. Na zijn opleidingen ruilde hij Belgi voor Parijs, het toenmalige centrum van de moderne kunst. Hij schilderde vooral menselijke figuren zoals blinden en muzikanten en arbeiders. Na een verblijf in Florence in 1925 kwamen daar harlekijnen bij.‎

‎Boek ter gelegenheid van een tentoonstelling; De Gentse schilder Jan Frans De Boever, geboren in 1872, studeerde aan de Gentse Academie onder Louis Tytgadt, wiens nichtje hij huwde. Tytgadt introduceerde hem in de kringen van adel en hogere burgerij, en hij werd een gevierd kunstenaar op de offici le Salons. Rond 1909 veranderde hij plotseling zijn stijl, en hij begon wulpse vrouwen en prostituees te schilderen in morbide context. Skeletten, dood en erotiek overspoelden zijn oeuvre. De vrouw werd er in voorgesteld als de rechterhand van de duivel, zijn discipel die werd uitgestuurd om het Rijk van het Kwade te vestigen; de man werd de willoze speelbal van haar grillen. Eens hij zijn eigen stijl gevonden had, een persoonlijke vorm van symbolisme, bleef hij deze stijl koppig volhouden. Literatuur, muziek en mythologie vormden zijn voornaamste inspiratiebron. Tussen 1914 en 1924 illustreerde hij Baudelaires "Les Fleurs du mal" voor de Gentse verzamelaar en mecenas L on Speltinckx met 157 gouaches; deze gouaches worden soms als zijn opus magnum beschouwd. De Boever boekte succes met zijn werk tot 1935, toen hij ook de gevolgen van de financi le crisis begon te voelen; niettemin bleef hij eigenzinnig verder schilderen in dezelfde stijl tot aan zijn dood in 1949. Le peintre Jean Fran ois De Boever naquit Gand en 1872. Il suivit les cours l'Acad mie Royale des Beaux-Arts de sa ville natale sous la direction de Louis Tytgadt, dont plus tard il pousa la ni ce. Il fut introduit par Tytgadt dans le milieu de la haute bourgeoisie et de la noblesse; ainsi il devint vite un portraitiste respect et une valeur s re aux Salons officiels de Gand, Anvers, Bruxelles et Li ge. Soudainement, en 1909, il modifia compl tement son style. Il commen a peindre des femmes lascives voluant dans un d cor morbide. Ses tableaux seront submerg s de squelettes et d'un rotisme sans bornes. Des femmes quasiment nues taient repr sent es comme servantes du diable, des esclaves qui devaient tablir son royaume sur terre. A ses yeux, l'homme devenait un jouet flasque, contraint se soumettre ses moindres caprices. En 1914, il commen a, la demande de son m c ne Speltinckx, l'illustration du recueil de po sies "Les Fleurs du mal" de Charles Baudelaire. Keyboard instruments can also be the key to decoding an allegory, myth or hidden message in a painting. Other exhibits include painted harpsichord and virginal lids as well as original instruments. Loans from the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Suermondt-Ludwigmuseum in Aachen and many other museums and collectors offer a delight for eyes and ears. The music room at the Snyders&Rockox House evokes the Jewish-Portuguese Duarte family, who came to Antwerp in the 16th century to flee the Inquisition. They were drawn by the commercial opportunities offered by the city, where they lived in a patrician residence on the Meir, the most important street. Hans Ruckers, his sons Joannes and Andreas and his grandson Joannes Couchet did for instrument-making what Peter Paul Rubens was doing for painting and Christophe Plantin for printing. The Ruckers-Couchet family was not alone: names like Marten van der Biest, Joos Karest, Cornelis and Simon Hagaerts, Joris Britsen and many others also stood for excellent quality. Antwerp harpsichords and virginals did not only sell very well locally, they were sought-after throughout Europe and even far beyond until well into the eighteenth century. A substantial proportion of Antwerp's harpsichord output, like that of its paintings and ornamental furniture, was destined for the international market. The city also developed a strong tradition in the building of domestic and church organs. Dozens of organ builders were active in the 16th century alone, including the Moors and Brebos families. The Ruckers-Couchet family worked with organs too: Joannes Ruckers, for instance, was responsible for a while for maintaining the organ at Antwerp Cathedral. The rise of the Antwerp keyboard builders was accompanied by a flourishing music printing industry (Antwerp was not the first or the only centre of music publication, but it was certainly one of the most important) and an emerging bourgeois culture in which music too played a part. The original instruments are a lasting testimony to musical life in Antwerp, as are the paintings that explore them as their subject matter. ‎The whole series of "Multiples & Editions" realized by Guillaume Bijl corresponds to his installations of a certain period: posters, small compositions, some "Sorry's" or tableaux vivants . Often, these multiples were created as an annex of temporary installations, or with the motivation to help non-pro t organizations, or to cover the costs. De Antwerpse kunstenaar Guillaume Bijl breekt in de jaren tachtig internationaal door met zijn 'transformatie-installaties'. Galerie n en musea transformeert hij tot banale en herkenbare commerci le of entertainmentsomgevingen zoals een tapijtenzaak, een supermarkt of een TV-Quizdecor. Daarnaast presenteert hij uitsneden uit de werkelijkheid als 'situatie-installaties' en 'compositions trouv es'. Minder bekend maar wijd verspreid zijn de multipels (kunstwerken in een oplage) die Bijl realiseert. Deze banaal ogende, door de kunstenaar geselecteerde voorwerpen krijgen een volledig andere betekenis wanneer ze als editie in een kunstcontext gepresenteerd worden. Daarnaast ontwierp Bijl ook diverse posters en kunstenaarsboeken in de context van zijn projecten en tentoonstellingen. Deze publicatie is het resultaat van een onderzoeksproject aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen en brengt voor het eerst alle multipels, posters en boeken van Guillaume Bijl samen.
