He himself as attested to in private letters between him and the Rhetorician Libanius had Christianity forced on him as a child by his cousin Constantius II who was a zealot Christian and would have not tolerated a pagan relative but Julian had never really accepted any religion until his reading of the Homeric poems some of the most important texts for the Greek religion. After this conversion to Hellenism he devoted his life to protecting and restoring the fame and security of this more ancient tradition as well as other religious traditions such as Judaism from Christian persecution. After gaining the purple Julian started a religious reformation of the state which in his intentions was to give back its lost strength to the Roman State. He supported the restoration of the old Roman faith based on polytheism. Julian reduced the influence of Christian bishops in public offices. W�hrend sich dadurch zum einen diese Frauen ganz allgemein als Dienerinnen der Isis zu erkennen geben f�llt zum anderen ein besonderes Licht auf die zur Angleichung ausgew�hlten Bilder der G�ttin. Dabei handelt es sich anders als bei den meisten bekannten Isistypen um keine mythologisch erkl�rbaren Gottesbilder. Sie sind deshalb der Forschung ebenso r�tselhaft geblieben wie die entsprechend angeglichenen und oftmals auch als Priesterinnen oder Mystinnen bezeichneten Frauen. Das Buch behandelt somit zwei Problemkreise n�mlich die Stellung jener Frauen im Kult sowie die damit verbundene Frage nach Sinn und Bedeutung der f�r die Angleichung verbindlichen Isisbilder. Das vorwiegend plastische Material ist in einem Katalog mit volst�ndigem Abbildungsteil zusammengestellt. Auf dieser Basis bietet das Buch eine ikonographische und ikonologische Untersuchung des Themas. Die ausschliesslich in statuarischen Kopien �berlieferten Isisbilder werden in angemessener Weise auf Originale hin rezensiert; die vorranging sepulkralen Darstellungen der Isisdienerinnen werden sowohl in quellenkritischer als auch arch�ologischer Hinsicht interpretiert. Daneben kommen auch religionsgeschichtliche Probleme zum Tragen. Ein l�ngeres Exkurs am Ende des Buches ist der Frage nach der sozialen Stellung der Isisdienerinnen gewidmet. . E. J. Brill paperback
