Vellum a little soiled occasional faint dampstains to head edge of text block leaves not as fresh as they once were insignificant fraying to edges of a folding plates and a few leaves one folding plate with two-inch tear to one corner not touching image two folding plates with short tears along central fold other trivial defects but still an excellent copy the text clean the coloring still rich and the binding solid.<br/> <br/> This is an intriguing and attractive piece of Dutch religious history stuffed full of engraved folding charts and calculations determining the moment the world will end; it also has a curious provenance as indicated by the charming engraved bookplate belonging to the cousin of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. Our author Robbert Robbertsz le Canu 1563-1630 was a Mennonite schoolmaster in Amsterdam whose scholarly output ranged from astronomy and maritime science to poetry and theology. In this work he uses the Jewish holidays and major biblical figures to build out a chronology of the world from Adam to Christ to the apocalypse with numerous charts illustrating the passage of time. Seven of these charts which vary in size and scale are illustrated with anonymous but attractively executed engravings of biblical events and have been hand-colored. This eschatological work is very rare: OCLC finds no institutional copies outside Europe and we could trace just two copies at auction in 1974 and 2001. The Friedlander copy in the latter year brought $6463 at Christie's-New York that copy is described as having eight folding tables while the 1974 copy had seven as does ours and as does the copy in the National Library of the Netherlands. Our copy is from the library of Vincent Van Gogh 1866-1911 the cousin of the painter by the same name. An art dealer and bookseller by trade he inherited his bookshop and gallery from his father Cornelis van Gogh 1824-1908 the brother of the artist's father. The two Vincents spent much time in the gallery growing up with the artist making numerous references to "Uncle Cor" in his letters noting the enjoyment he took in looking at the artworks and illustrated books in his uncle's shop; it is entirely possible that those books included the present volume. The bookplate itself contains a story of the artistic circles in which the Van Gogh family existed: it was executed by Marius Bauer 1867-1904 who etched four separate bookplates for our Vincent Van Gogh. The two apparently met when Bauer was drawing cartoons for Van Gogh's father's periodical "Kroniek"; Cornelis described Bauer as having "een goed oog voor de zotheid der dingen" "a good eye for the ridiculousness of things". That eye is evident in this amusing bookplate which depicts the bookseller as a haggard caricature hunched over his book with a magnifying glass an embodiment of how many a bookseller has felt on a bad day. Toutes tranches marbrées. Mention calligraphiée du "P. Benedictus Ambrosettus" en revers de la page de titre, un peu d'espace baillant à la reliure près de la page de titre, le bloc des pages étant ensuite relié de façon homogène. Dédicace de "Damianus Zenarus" au patricien et sénateur vénitien Francisco Longo, table des matières "Capitum Elencus" avec les huit parties du livres et leurs sous-parties, dites chapitres (3 pp.), suivi de l'"Index Compendiosus Secundum Alpha beti ordinem operis praesentis", le tout non paginé et faisant 61 pp. en tout. Le corps du livre est paginé de façon curieuse : deux pages sont comptées comme une seule page, avec un nouveau nombre à chaque page de droite, soit 396 pp. indiquées pour 794 + 1 pp. Avec lettrines tout au long du texte. br. Tra gli aspetti originali della dottrina cristiana la visione del compimento dell'esistenza umana e della vicenda storica occupa un posto singolare. Se, lungo i secoli, il desiderio di avere risposte soddisfacenti agli interrogativi circa tale compimento aveva portato a costruire una 'fisica dei fini ultimi' e una 'geografia dell'aldilà', nei tempi recenti si è preso coscienza del fatto che la meta della storia rimane avvolta nel mistero di Dio. Ciò non significa, tuttavia, che il futuro degli esseri umani e del mondo sia del tutto sconosciuto, e quindi di fronte a esso non resti più nulla da dire. Piuttosto una rinnovata ermeneutica dei testi biblici e patristici ha permesso di riscoprire il centro del messaggio escatologico del cristianesimo: Gesù Cristo risorto, paradigma della persona umana nella sua vittoria sulla morte e, nello stesso tempo, principio della palingenesi del cosmo. Alla luce del centro ritrovato, le immagini bibliche - come quelle assunte dalle culture attraversate dal cristianesimo - appaiono nella loro valenza metaforica; liberano pertanto significati capaci di legare presente e futuro. L'opera tra le mani del lettore offre, in primo luogo, un ricco percorso storico- teologico che rende conto degli sviluppi del pensiero cristiano sui 'novissimi'; segue poi una riflessione sistematica che pone al centro la figura del Signore risorto e, a partire da essa, illustra la connotazione escatologica dell'esistenza cristiana nella Chiesa; la morte infine è presentata come passaggio verso il compimento, che comporta il giudizio nella parusia di Cristo. Il volume è pensato per stimolare la riflessione del lettore e con l'intento di introdurre a ulteriori ricerche sull'affascinante mistero del destino disposto da Dio per l'umanità e per il cosmo.

Si coglie così la profondità della poesia del poema, che per Dante non è mai riducibile a finzione letteraria, ma che anzi si nutre di una tensione vigorosa nello sforzo di comunicare, mediante la bellezza e la forza espressiva del linguaggio poetico, le verità di fede e di pensiero che sono proprie dell'epoca in cui egli visse e di cui si riappropriò in modo sorprendente e personale, presentandosi ai suoi contemporanei come poeta depositario di una visione. Il libro è articolato in tre parti, dedicate a tre temi escatologici presenti nella tradizione in cui l'Alighieri affonda le radici: quello della visione divinamente ispirata, quello della resurrezione delle anime e dei corpi alla fine dei tempi, quello dell'angelologia. Ciascuno di essi ha il fondamento nella Bibbia e giunge a Dante attraverso la mediazione di opere di esegesi biblica, di riflessione filosofica e teologica maturate nel silenzio dei chiostri, in seno alla Scolastica, all'interno degli Ordini mendicanti. L'indagine su questi temi e sulle opere lette da Dante permette di accedere alla sua poesia da un punto di osservazione privilegiato e spesso trascurato negli studi critici sulla Commedia.

Il testo di Josef Ratzinger condensa delle profonde riflessioni sul senso della morte, inquadrando tale evento entro una cornice teologica con particolare riferimento alla cristologia: "Morire significa essere con Cristo" (Fil 1,34). Se lo studio dell'autore comprende vari ambiti di interesse, sia nell'ordine storico-biblico che escatologico-apocalittico, il punto nevralgico di questa riflessione è l'apprendimento-scoperta del valore e del significato che la morte, intesa come evento umano, rappresenta per il credente. Secondo l'autore ha senso, perciò, progredire nella conoscenza della morte secondo quella che lui stesso definisce "la novità cristiana", oltrepassando così, da un lato, l'antica prospettiva greco-pagana, dove seppur non in maniera totale e definitiva la morte segnava la fine dell'essere uomo nella totalità-coordinamento di tutte le sue funzioni vitali e individuali, destinato ad un ambiguo futuro essere nel non essere, sostanzialmente entro una visione dualistica corpo-anima; dall'altro, nell'AT "tutto ciò che è connesso con la morte è qualificato come impuro, anche il culto dei morti", e perciò la morte segna anche qui uno "smaltimento" (seppur non di tipo dualistico come per i greci) dell'uomo destinato ad un'esistenza d'ombra nello Sheol.

E la coscienza, soprattutto quella filosofica, sembra godere della propria irresponsabilità. Filo conduttore dei presente lavoro è, al contrario, che proprio la decadenza dei meta-racconti impone al pensiero l’assunzione di una responsabilità tanto più radicale quanto più priva di rassicurazione.
