Full contemporary paneled calf; head and tail of spine recapped; outer hinge to the front cover is professionally restored; corner tips are repaired. The spine leather is darkened in some areas. A narrow stripe of darkened leather extends part way onto the front and rear boards perhaps caused by a former label. The front free blank end-paper is replaced with a matching leaf of early paper. A small chip on the inner margin of the frontispiece is carefully repaired and hardly noticeable. Pages are generally clean and crisp. Minor specks of foxing in the margins of the title page; name written in an old hand on upper right corner. Thomas Burnet 1635-1715 was Head of Clare Hall Cambridge and later of the Charterhouse. He wrote several books of speculative cosmogony. In "De Statu mortuorum" Burnet discourses on the nature of the soul and its middle state between death and resurrection. Spiritual bodies angels visions apparitions etc. are all discussed. Burnet argues against the endlessness of punishment in the afterlife. The second edition includes the appendix "Futur Judaeorum restauratione" which is paginated separately.
