Boards ruled in gilt spine stamped in gilt. First five leaves lacking outer corner somewhat affecting text. Good. With a biblical verse for everyday of the year including February 29th. "The smallest series of Bible selections for every day of the year is entitled Small Rain Upon the Tener Herb. This title like Dew Drops is taken from Deuteronomy 32:2 and is itself an extract from the full text which is: 'My doctrine shall drop as the rain My speech shall distil as the dew; As the small rain upon the tender grass And as the showers upon the herb.' Small Rain was first published about 1830 by our friends the Religious Tract Society in London. It is one of the commonest miniature books of the period and went through some twenty editions between 1830 and 1840. Most copies measure 1 1/4 by 1 inches consist of 128 pages with easily readable six-point type. Smaller than Dew Drops and Daily Food ths devotional morsel was mainly for children." Pencil inscription on blank following front endpaper head and tail of spine and corners very slightly rubbed inner dentelles inside front cover slightly chipped gilt on lower edges and at lower corner damaged by damp so that red showing only see image tip of lower page corners also affected by damp and tips creased throughout most of the volume. Miniature 2.6" x 4.5" rebound in full brown leather with gold stamping and labels 5 hubs engraved frontispiece of Dr Saml Johnson engraved title page 160 pages. Rare Miniature of the larger original published in 1759. Rasselas is Dr. Johnson's version of a morality tale about what constitutes True Happiness that rivals Voltaire's Candide. The volumes' working title was "The Choice of Life." The name "Rasselas" means "The Chief" of a tribe in exotic Abyssinia. The Great Cham & Lexicographer was pro-emancipation and had a black manservant whom he treated very well. This minor classic was supposedly written by the good Doctor to defray expenses expected with his mother's funeral. In fact there are signs of extensive revisions in early editions that suggest greater literary intentions. Rebound in fine brown morocco with gilt stamped title and author on the spine. Foxed engraved frontispiece and title page otherwise pages bright and legible with a tight binding tight. Lower margin of page 7 roughly torn away but not affecting the clear text. Not listed in the series Children's Popular Tales to which it belongs; possibly number 14 as thirteen titles from this series are given on the rear cover. Also listed are twelve titles from Nurse Rockbaby's Story Books. Price of booklet is given as one penny plain and two pennies colored. Code on rear cover indicates 1859 date. Slight discoloration to covers; booklet in very good clean condition overall. An incredibly violent children's story which ends with the protagonist being attacked by a large spider. Frontispiece and text illustrations throughout. Nd c. 1800 difficult to date but the long s is employed throughout so probably around 1800. The page number starts a five and is numbered to 31. The title of The little bible is at the head of page five and starts at Adam & Eve. The frontispiece is on the inside of the front wrapper. The publishers attractive wrappers are crudely printed with two birds on the front and back. Contents generally marked throughout wrappers are somewhat dusty and marked.
