A delicate brilliantly executed example of late 19th century miniature book design this title presents biblical quotations in a devotional format- with one phrase for each morning and evening of a month. Lovely chromolithographs are interspersed throughout the text. This title is exceptionally rare with OCLC listing no libraries possessing a copy of it. Indeed OCLC lists the only known copy as being in the collection of famed miniature book collector Ruth E. Adomeit. Front cover a bit rubbed and darkened with gilt decoration somewhat dulled. Like condition affecting gilded edges. Previous owner's pencil gift inscription to verso of front free endsheet. Sporadic light foxing throughout. Bound into original publisher's burgundy morocco wallet style case with tuck-in flap gilt title 2 gilt rules and 2 tiny gilt motifs to spine all edges gilt blue grey endpapers. Head and tail of spine very slightly worn binding very slightly rubbed small closed tear to tuck-in flap almost invisibly mended fold to front endpapers cracked but binding sound faint inscription on front endpaper dated 1829 contents very nice. A very good plus copy most likely first edition. Bondy mentions having seen a copy with the extra gold printed leaves at the rear. Spine and edges of boards slightly rubbed with very small loss of surface paper on spine and on lower corner of lower board ink name stamped on reverse of front endpaper frontispiece holding only on lower string page 29 holding only on upper string. A good plus copy. Items in this little series are often found lacking the frontispiece as with use the string cuts through its inner margin. Tipped-in to volume II page 570 of Letters of a Family During the War for the Union 1861-1865 Printed for Private Distribution by Georgeana Woolsey Bacon and Eliza Woolsey Howland 1899 with a manuscript note in the margin dated 1899 and reading in part "Furniture & hangings by L. Marcotte & Co . everything made to perfect scale . sold to L.C. who refused it . Re-sold to the women's prisoners of the Insane Asylum at Philadelphia where the poor women when 'good' are allowed to play with it." Unrecorded in OCLC we assume this was printed for private distribution by a member of the Bacon or Howland family. The model fairy house and furniture was possibly made for the New York Metropolitan Fair of 1864 preparations for which are mentioned often in the collected family letters. Unrecorded in OCLC C.O.
