- s.l. s.d. (circa 1916), 12,5x17cm, une feuille rempliée. - Belle lettre autographe signée de Georges Auric, alors mobilisé (27e corps, 3e unité, 1ère section) adressée à son amie Bolette Natanson. Quatre pages rédigées à l'encre noire sur un papier vergé. Pliures transversales inhérentes à la mise sous pli de la missive. Dans cette ambivalente lettre, à la fois teintée d'optimisme et de pessimisme, Georges Auric remercie son amie pour les nouvelles qu'elle lui donne et pour les livres qu'elle lui fait parvenir, le distrayant ainsi de son effroyable existence au front : "... il revèle bien des coins lumineux dans un monde où les cachots sont les domiciles quotidiens d'une humainté pitoyable." Il lui fait part de sa terrible expérience de la guerre qui le dépasse : "la bataille, le canon qui tue Dieu dans le coeur de la France et sanctifie l'Allemagne... toute cette machination prodigieuse... où ce sont les innocents qui reçoivent le coup de poignard dans le dos... l'escamotage inimaginable de cette vigne humaine qui ne mûrira jamais..." tout en entretenant quand même une lueur d'espoir dans tout ce chaos : "... on aime plus que jamais la France qui peut supporter cela et le monde qui vit cela, avec à côtés les petits et les grands drames quotidiens de la vie, la grande misère de l'or, de l'amour et de la gloire. Quelle folie. On voudrait être un humain d'après tout cela, voir, vivre, comprendre." Enfin Georges Auric se remémore, avec regrets, les moments passés, les occasions manquées et fugaces de la vie tout en attendant la mort qui rôde dans les tranchées : "... on oublie de vivre. On oublie de voir. Qu'ai-je vu ? Qu'avez-vous vécu ? Il y a quelques petits frissons et quelques coups de soleil qui m'on fait palpiter cinq minutes... J'ai manqué bien des occasions avec une amère jouissance et un fou mépris... Maintenant, j'attends le coup de fusil, la tranchée où l'on meurt... et je ne sais pas si je ressusciterais un jour à ma vie..." Superbe et touchante lettre dans laquelle Georges Auric se montre, comme ses frères d'infortune et d'armes, indélébilement marqué par l'affreuse expérience de la Grande Guerre. Evoluant depuis sa plus tendre enfance dans les milieux artistiques - elle est la fille d'Alexandre et la nièce de Thadée Natanson, les créateurs de la fameuse Revue Blanche - Bolette Natanson (1892-1936) se lia d'amitié avec Jean Cocteau, Raymond Radiguet, Georges Auric, Jean Hugo ou encore Colette. Passionnée par la couture, elle quitte Paris pour les Etats-Unis avec Misia Sert, grande amie de Coco Chanel et est embauchée chez Goodman. Avec son mari Jean-Charles Moreux, ils créèrent en 1929 la galerie Les Cadres boulevard Saint-Honoré et fréquentèrent de nombreux artistes et intellectuels. Leur succès fut immédiat et ils multiplièrent les projets : la création de la cheminée de Winnaretta de Polignac, la décoration du château de Maulny, l'agencement de l'hôtel particulier du baron de Rothschild, la création de cadres pour l'industriel Bernard Reichenbach et enfin la réalisation de la devanture de l'institut de beauté de Colette en 1932. Bolette Natanson encadra également les uvres de ses prestigieux amis peintres : Bonnard, Braque, Picasso, Vuillard, Man Ray, André Dunoyer de Segonzac, etc. En dépit de cette fulgurante ascension, elle mettra fin à ses jours en décembre 1936 quelques mois après le décès de son père. Comœdia illustré No17: La Saison Russe a l'Opéra 1910.
Comœdia illustré Paris 1 June 1910. . Folio 31.8 x 24.5 cm. 32 pp. illustrated throughout. Original colour printed wrappers. Fine example of the special issue of the Comoedia Illustré dedicated to the second Russian season in Paris performed at the beautiful Grand Opéra. The 1910 programme featured newly created pieces such as Giselle Les Orientales and Le Carnaval and previously staged ballets like Le Festin Les Sylphides and Cléopâtre. The star of the season was young Stravinsky's Firebird which was first performed on 25 June 1910 and became an instant success with both audience and critics. Another piece produced specially for the second season was Schéhérazade. Described by Alexander Benois as 'a wonderful spectacle to which I can hardly find a parallel' it was the first true creation of the Ballet Russes because except for the opera Prince Igor all the other ballets in Diaghilev's first Paris season were new versions of already existing works. For financial reasons Diaghilev could not include any opera in his 1910 season The cover of the 1910 issue features the famous colour photograph of Nijinsky and Karsavina in the ballet Les Sylphides. A four-page article titled La saison russe à l'Opéra presents the pieces scheduled for the season and shows pictures of some of the most famous Russian dancers – such as Fokina and Nijinsky – in their beautiful costumes designed by Leon Bakst. Comoedia Illustré was a bimonthly artistic magazine published from 1908 to 1936 as a supplement to Comoedia. The latter was a French cultural periodical founded by Henri Desgrange a French cyclist and sports journalist who gained fame as the first organiser of the Tour de France. Comoedia Illustré played a crucial role in popularising Russian ballet and making the programmes of Russian seasons available to a French public hungry for Russian exotics. Fine copy of an illustrated Revue Musicale issue dedicated to the Ballets Russes with a special tribute to Diaghilev who had died the previous year. It contains testimonials memories of friends and collaborators such as Gabriel Astruc Alexandre Benois Robert Brussel Michel Georges-Michel Émile Henriot Louis Laloy Michel Larionov the Comtesse de Noailles and Gilbert de Voisins. Of great interest are the numerous illustrations that run through the issue. These include reproductions of drawings e.g. Jean Cocteau's sketching of Diaghilev and Nijinsky as well as Bakst's costume designs etchings e.g. Picasso's etching of star dancer Leonid Massine and photographs of ballet sets scenes and dancers. In his concluding article Prunières summarized Diaghilev's contribution to the worlds of music and dance as follows: "For almost 20 years the Ballets Russes provided us with new things in the realms of music visual art and choreography every year. Aesthetic issues that seemed eternally debated in the inner sancta of Montparnasse and Montmartre were taken before the mass public. Each season came to call into question all that we previous believed to have been said already. . One might say that all of musical and artistic life depended in large part on this extraordinary man." Edited between 1920 and 1940 by Henry Prunières 1886–1942 La revue musicale is considered to be one of the most important music periodicals published in France in the period between the World Wars.
