Nel 1820, Paolina Maria Jaricot lancia il primo Movimento Organizzato per l?offerta di un determinato contributo economico da parte di tutti i fedeli cattolici a tutte le missioni della Chiesa: e' l?inizio dell?Opera della Propagazione della Fede che il 3 maggio 1822 viene affidata alla direzione di laici impegnati nell?aiuto alle missioni. Posta sotto la protezione di san Francesco Saverio, Patrono delle missioni, l?Opera viene ufficialmente riconosciuta nel 1922 e dichiarata ?Pontificia? da Papa Pio XI.
