CHARLET DAVID ALAN
Atlas Of Nevada Conifers: A Phytogeographic Reference
University of Nevada Press Reno: 1996. Softcover. Brand new book. Atlas of Nevada Conifers is a major scientific contribution to our understanding of the ecology of Nevada. It documents in great detail the distribution of all native conifer species in the statecritical information because of the primary ecological importance of conifers for all organisms and because of the lack of documentation of these distributions in the scientific literature. Charlet maps and documents the exact location of herbarium records for 1600 individual trees. The data found in 23 tables and 22 range maps will serve as a primary reference for botanists land managers and conservation biologists for years to come. The level of detail in this work will be of great value to scientists investigating evolutionary questions with modern techniques using new DNA and allozyme technologies. Each occurrence of a species is precisely located in a mountain range and in one of fifteen western herbaria where specimens are stored. David Charlet received his B.S. and M.S. in Biology and his Ph.D. in Ecology Evolution and Conservation Biology from the University of Nevada Reno. He currently is a Professor at the Community College of Southern Nevada in the Las Vegas Valley where he teaches 10 biology and environmental science classes each year. "A definitive resource for botanists land managers and conservation biologists for decades to come. Author David Charlet's detailed maps and exhaustive records are like treasure maps to the many unexplored motherlodes of biodiversity waiting to be explored in the Great Basin." David Lukas Great Basin News "This atlas documents Dr. Charlet's extensive field research to accurately identify the species and locations of the state's conifer stands precisely maps the distribution of all the species and significantly extends the known range of almost every species of pine fir spruce juniper and cedar in the state." SciTech Book News University of Nevada Press, Reno: 1996 paperback

Adrienne Lecouvreur.
Paris ca. 1870. Original photograph carte de visite albumen print 9 x 55 cm. - Adrienne Lecouvreur April 5 1692 - March 20 1730 was a French actress. Born in Damery she first appeared professionally on the stage in Lille. After her Paris debut at the Comdie Franaise in 1717 she was immensely popular with the public until her mysterious death. She was credited with having developed a more natural less stylized type of acting. She had a romance with Maurice de Saxe which ended in tragedy when she was apparently poisoned by her rival the Duchess of Bouillon. The refusal of the Catholic Church to give her a Christian burial moved her friend Voltaire to write a bitter poem on the subject. Her life became the inspiration for a tragic drama by Scribe and Legouv. on which Francesco Cilea's opera Adriana Lecouvreur is based. Photographie Charlet & Jacotin 37 Boult. de Strasbourg Paris. CHARLET & JACOTIN.
Anna Boleyn.
Paris ca. 1870. Original photograph carte de visite albumen print 9 x 55 cm. - Anne Boleyn Marquess of Pembroke c.1501/1507 - 19 May 1536 also called Ann Bolin and Anne Bullen the Early Modern English pronunciation was the second wife and queen consort of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and marriage to Boleyn was the beginning of political and religious upheaval which was the English Reformation with Anne promoting Church Reform. She was beheaded on charges of adultery and treason on 19 May 1536. Boleyn was the daughter of Thomas Boleyn 1st Earl of Wiltshire and 1st Earl of Ormonde and his wife Lady Elizabeth Boleyn born Lady Elizabeth Howard daughter of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk. It is not known for certain where she was born but it was either at her family's mansion of Blickling Hall in Norfolk or at their favourite home of Hever Castle in Kent. It was rumoured later in her life that she had been born with six fingers on her left hand at the time considered a sign of the devil probably as a reaction by Catholics following Henry VIII's separation from the church of Rome. She had two siblings: Her sister Mary was probably a little younger than she was and her brother George may have been older. The controversy about the order of the children is described by Ives 2005 pp16-17. Some claim Mary was younger than Anne some claim older. George was probably the youngest having been married last other than Anne who was of course courting the king at the time. In later life Boleyn did not have a particularly affectionate relationship with her father but in her childhood she was anxious to please him. Her relationship with her sister Mary was turbulent as she disagreed with Mary's second husband who was far below her- a common soldier and the two were not on speaking terms at the time of Anne's death. She enjoyed a much happier relationship with her mother and her brother both of whom she was very close to. The Boleyns were not high nobility and had only held power for four generations. Boleyn's father had married into the powerful Howard family. She had a very powerful aristocratic heritage; her great-grandparents included a Lord Mayor of London a duke an earl two aristocratic ladies and a knight. She was certainly more aristocratic than either Jane Seymour or Catherine Parr two of Henry's other wives. She was also the elder cousin of Henry's fifth wife Lady Catherine Howard. Boleyn's father was a respected diplomat with a gift for languages who had been a favourite of Henry VII and Henry VIII who sent him on many diplomatic missions abroad. In Europe Thomas Boleyn's professionalism and charm won many admirers including Archduchess Margaret of Austria the daughter of Maximilian I the Holy Roman Emperor. Margaret was currently ruling the Netherlands on behalf of her father and caring for her nephew and three nieces. Margaret was so impressed with him that she offered his youngest daughter Anne a place in her household. Ordinarily a girl had to be 12 years old to have such an honour but Anne might have been somewhat younger as Margaret affectionately referred to her as "la Petite Boleyn"; this appointment however is often used as evidence that Anne was born in 1501 not 1507. She made a good impression in the Netherlands with her manners and determination to work hard at her education. She is believed to have lived there from the spring of 1513 to the autumn of 1514. Anne Boleyn was not considered a great beauty of the time. Her body was too thin; her complexion too dark for the day's conventions of beauty. However many men commented on her magnificent dark eyes and beautiful dark hair. The most famous man to be attracted to her was of course King Henry VIII. Almost all artists of the day painted Anne with fair hair because artists of the day painted to flatter the "beauty" of the sitter. Anne also made up for her actual lack of conventional good looks with her fashion sense inspiring many new trends; she was probably the biggest fashion icon of her time. One Italian who met Anne in 1532 wrote that she was "not one of the handsomest women in the world" but others thought she was "competent belle" "quite beautiful" and "young and good-looking." Her vivacity was also considered attractive. William Forrest author of a contemporary poem about Catherine of Aragon complimented Anne's "passing excellent" skill as a dancer. "Here" he wrote "was a fresh young damsel that could trip and go." Her personality was complex and contradictory and it has been greatly distorted by those opposed to her controversial marriage and radical religious views. She was a devout Christian in the new tradition of Renaissance Humanism calling her a Protestant would be too strong. She also gave generously to charity and contrary to popular myth was extremely emotional. In her youth she was "sweet. - Elizabeth Tudor was born on 7 September 1533 at Greenwich Palace. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. Henry had defied the papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor to marry Anne spurred on by love and the need for a legitimate male heir. And so Elizabeth's birth was one of the most exciting political events in 16th century European history; rarely had so much turmoil occurred on behalf of a mere infant. But the confident predictions of astrologers and physicians were wrong and the longed-for prince turned out to be a princess.
- Jeanne Franoise Julie Adlade Rcamier December 4 1777 - May 11 1849 a famous Frenchwoman in the literary and political circles of the early 19th century was born at Lyon. Her maiden name was Bernard. She was married at fifteen to the banker Jacques Rcamier d. 1830 who was more than old enough to be her father. Beautiful accomplished with a real love for literature she possessed at the same time a temperament which protected her from scandal and from the early days of the French Consulate to almost the end of the July Monarchy her salon in Paris was one of the chief resorts of literary and political society that pretended to fashion. The habitus of her house included many former royalists with others such as Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and Jean Victor Marie Moreau more or less disaffected to the government. This circumstance together with her refusal to act as lady-in-waiting to Empress consort Josphine de Beauharnais and her friendship for Anne Louise Germaine de Stal brought her under suspicion. It was through Madame de Stal that Madame Rcamier became acquainted with Benjamin Constant whose singular political tergiversations during the last days of the empire and the first of the restoration have been attributed to her persuasions. Madame Rcamier was eventually exiled from Paris by the orders of Napoleon I of France. After a short stay at her native Lyon she proceeded to Rome and finally to Naples. There Rcamier was on exceedingly good terms with Joachim Murat and his wife Caroline Bonaparte who were then intriguing with the Bourbons. She persuaded Constant to plead the claims of Murat in a memorandum addressed to the Congress of Vienna and also induced him to take up a decided attitude in opposition to Napoleon during the Hundred Days. Her husband had sustained heavy financial losses in 1805 and she visited Madame de Stal at Coppet in Switzerland. There was a project for her divorce in order that she might marry Prince Augustus of Prussia but though her husband was willing it was not arranged. In her later days she lost most of the rest of her fortune; but she continued to receive visitors at the Abbaye-aux-Bois the old Paris convent to which she retired in 1814. Here Franois-Ren de Chateaubriand was a constant visitor and in a manner master of the house; but even in old age ill-health and reduced circumstances Madame Rcamier never lost her attraction. She seems to have been incapable of any serious attachment and although she numbered among her admirers Mathieu de Montmorency Lucien Bonaparte Prince Augustus of Prussia Pierre-Simon Ballanche Jean-Jacques Ampre and Constant none of them obtained over her so great an influence as did Chateaubriand though she suffered much from his imperious temper. If she had any genuine affection it seems to have been for Amable Guillaume Prosper Brugire baron de Barante whom she met at Coppet. There are well-known portraits of her by Jacques-Louis David illustration above right in the Louvre and by Franois Pascal Simon Baron Grard in the possession of the prefecture of the Seine. In 1859 Souvenirs et correspondences tirs des papiers de Madame Rcamier was edited by Mme Lenormant.
Died 8 December 1744. Married 19 June 1734. Marquis Louis de La Tournelle son of Marquis Roger de La Tournelle and Charlotte du Deffand. Born 1728. Died 23 November 1740 Paris. Affaire with Louis XV King of France 1715-1774 son of Louis Duc de Bourgogne and Princess Marie Adelaide de Savoie. Born 15 February 1710 Versailles. Died 10 May 1774 Versailles. Mademoiselle de Monchy at the age of sixteen married the Marquis de La Tournelle and became known as Madame de La Tournelle. In 1739 her eldest sister Madame de Mailly became the mistress of King Louis XV but was replaced by her other sister Madame de Vintimille. In 1741 the latter died in childbirth and then it was to Madame de La Tournelle the king turned. Madame de La Tournelle was much prettier though far nastier than either of her sisters and stated her terms before accepting the king demanding the position and title of 'maitresse en titre'. Later on she was created Duchesse de Chateauroux and demanded a grand house in Paris jewels and a monthly income. Any children that might be born were to be legitimised. Louis XV deeply in love accepted all her demands. Although she used and abused the king yet she was probably the great passion of his life. In 1744 Louis XV on her instigation personally took command of his army in the spring offensive in the War of the Austrian Succession. However as the king refused to take the queen Madame de Chateauroux was also left behind. After a while without the king's summons she simply went to the front and the king was delighted. In August of 1744 the king became seriously ill and it was apparent he might die. To prepare himself he knew he had to dismiss his mistress and ask the queen to his side. When the people realised that she had been dismissed they threw rotting vegetables at her carriage and jeered and abused her. Madame de Chateauroux was shattered shocked by the loss of her protector and by the obvious hatred of the French. Screaming abuse mobs surrounded her house and when she dared venture out she was almost dragged out of her carriage. Ill she took to her bed. However the king did not die and as soon as possible returned to Versailles. Having no intention of changing his ways he sent for Madame de Chateauroux. It was December. Cold and weakened by her long confinement she rose too quickly from her sickbed caught a chill and collapsed with pneumonia. She died without ever seeing Louis XV again. Madame Roland.
Paris ca. 1870. Original photograph carte de visite albumen print 9 x 55 cm. Viscountess Jeanne Marie Roland de la Platiere born Manon Jeanne Philipon March 17 1754 - November 8 1793 became the wife of Jean Marie Roland de la Platiere and is better known simply as Madame Roland. Both she and her husband were famous figures of the French Revolution. She was the daughter of Gratien Philipon alternatively spelt Philippon a Paris engraver who was ambitious speculative and nearly always poor. From her early years she showed great aptitude for study an ardent and enthusiastic spirit and unquestionable talent. She was largely self-taught; and her love of reading acquainted her with Plutarch - an author she continued to cherish throughout her life - thereafter with Bossuet Massillon and authors of a like stamp and finally with Montesquieu Voltaire and Rousseau. As her studies developed under the influence of these authors she abandoned the idea of entering a convent and added to the enthusiasm for a republic which she had imbibed from her earlier studies she was inspired by her reading with cynicism and daring. She married Jean Marie Roland in 1781 every bit his equal in intellect and character. Through him and with him she exercised a singularly powerful influence over the destinies of France from the outbreak of the French Revolution till her death by guillotine. In the early days of their marriage Madame Roland wrote political articles for the Courrier de Lyon. When the couple moved to Paris she began to take an even more active role. Her salon on the rue Gungaud in Paris became the rendezvous of Brissot Ption Robespierre and other leaders of the popular movement. An especially esteemed guest was Buzot whom she loved with platonic enthusiasm. In person Madame Roland is said to have been attractive but not beautiful; her ideas were clear and far-reaching her manner calm and her power of observation extremely acute. It was almost inevitable that she should find herself in the centre of political aspirations and presiding over a company of the most talented men of progress. The rupture between the Girondist party and that section still more extreme that of The Mountain had not yet occurred. For a time the whole left united in forcing the resignation of the ministers. However after Monsieur Roland had made a stand against the worst excesses of the Revolution the couple became very unpopular. Once Madame Roland appeared personally in the Assembly to repel the falsehoods of an accuser and her ease and dignity evoked enthusiasm and compelled acquittal. However the accusations continued. On the morning of June 1 1793 she was arrested and thrown into the prison of the Abbaye. Her husband escaped to Rouen. Released for an hour from the Abbaye she was again arrested and placed in Sainte-Pelagie. Finally she was transferred to the Conciergerie. In prison she was respected by the guards and was allowed the privilege of writing materials and occasional visits from devoted friends. There she wrote her Appel l'impartiale postrit those memoirs which display a strange alternation between self-laudation and patriotism between the trivial and the sublime. She was tried on trumped up charges of harbouring royalist sympathies; the plain fact was that she was to be expunged as part of the purge by Robespierre of the Girondist opposition and was duly convicted. On November 8 1793 she was conveyed to the guillotine. Before placing her head on the block she bowed before the clay statue of Liberty in the Place de la Rvolution uttering the famous remark for which she is remembered: O Libert que de crimes on commet en ton nom! Oh Liberty what crimes are committed in thy name! Two days after her execution her husband Jean Marie Roland committed suicide. Photographie Charlet & Jacotin 37 Boult. de Strasbourg Paris. Maria Theresa Vienna May 13 1717 - November 29 1780 in Vienna was the first and only ruling Empress of the Habsburg dynasty. She was Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia and ruler of other territories from 1740 until her death. She also became the Holy Roman Empress when her husband was elected Holy Roman Emperor. She was one of the so-called "enlightened despots" . She was one of the most powerful rulers of her time ruling over much of central Europe. Her Royal Highness Maria Theresa Archduchess of Austria Princess Royal of Hungary and Bohemia was the eldest daughter of Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Wolfenbttel and Charles VI whose sole male heir - his son Leopold Johann - died as an infant in 1716. In 1713 Charles issued the Pragmatic Sanction which guaranteed his daughter the right to succeed to the Austrian throne and inherit his united lands on his death. Initially many European monarchs agreed to the Pragmatic Sanction when it was issued. However soon after Maria Theresa assumed the throne upon Charles' death on October 20 1740 the War of Austrian Succession began. Maria Theresa was married to Francis Stephen Duke of Lorraine. In the end she had 16 children by him with 11 daughters all of whom had the first name "Maria" and 5 sons surviving to adulthood. Her youngest daughter was Maria Antonia better known under her French name Marie Antoinette who would be promised in marriage to Louis heir apparent to the king of France later King Louis XVI. After her husband's death she made her son Joseph II co-regent of her Austrian dominions but she actually kept most of the power to herself which led to tension between her and her son. It was not until her death that he could fully exercise his powers. KEYWORDS:france/photo unknown

Marie Stuart.
KEYWORDS:france/photo unknown
