The Camerarius Florilegium : to be offered as Lot 151 in the Sale of Valuable Travel and Natural History Books: Wednesday 20 May 1992 Christie Manson & Woods Ltd auction catalogue sale date: 20 May 1992.
Christie's London auction catalogue for Lot 151the sale held on 20 May 1992. Laminated wrappers 4to. 30 pp colour plates. 1 lot. From the catalogue: "A Manuscript Flower Book containing 473 drawings of ornamental plants arranged seasonally for the most part watercolours and bodycolours on paper on 194 leaves. Nuremberg c. 1589. One of the first pictorial records of flowers in a 16th-century garden and the precursor of the Hortus Eystettensis 1613. It portrays 473 ornamental plants many being recently introduced exotics from the New World Asia Minor and the Far East. Manuscripts of this kind are virtually unknown. This manuscript florilegium depicts plants in the garden of the Nuremberg botanist and physician Joachim Camerarius 1534-1598 and is important for its connection with the greatest German garden of its time that of the Prince-Bishop Johann Conrad von Germmingen at Eichsttt celebrated in the Hortus Eystettensis 1613 published by Basil Besler. Many of the plants grown at Eichsttt came from Camerarius the leading German botanist of his day who had designed and supervised the original layout of the gardens. This manuscript besides being a work of great beauty represents a significant document in the development of horticulture in the latter 1500s. It is probably the only known surviving pictorial record of the contents of an important 16th-century flower garden at the very time when flower cultivation and the growing of plants for pleasure was beginning to emerge as an art in its own right. Prior to this gardens were mostly utilitarian devoted to culinary and medicinal plants and depictions of their contents in manuscripts and books were devoted to plants as materia medica or as symbols and emblems in religious art. The importation of exotic species the product of rapid colonial expansion and increased trade in the 16th century enlarged the horticultural repertoire and fed a growing fashion for beautiful and exotic plants confirmed by the appearance of printed florilegia at the beginning of the 17th century of which the Hornis Eystettensis is the outstanding example. Joachim Camerarius born in Nuremberg in 1534 was raised in the house of his father's friend the great reformer Philipp Melanchthon. Price noted in margin otherwise near Fine. The Franklin H. Kissner Collection of Books on Rome. Sold by order of the Executors of the late Franklin H. Kissner. Christie's auction catalogue sale dates: 3 - 5 October 1990
Christie's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 3rd - 5th October 1990. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 383 pp numerous ills many in colour. 1128 lots. From the introduction: "Mr Kissner's life-long devotion to Romenaturally made him turn to books and prints dealing with the art history and literature of ancient medieval and baroque Rome and the civilizing influence of the City on the regions and peoples incorporated in its empire. His library finally grew to include well over 4000 rare books all of which are offered for sale in the present auction catalogueSo many splendid illustrated books form part of the Kissner Collection that it is difficult to single out the finest for mention in this short introduction. Mr. Kissner evidently bought most of his books in Europe from Italian dealers as well as from the English trade and less often in the sale-rooms. Many of his most important acquisitions came from E. P. Goldschmidt & Co. notably the superb set of Lafreni's Speculum from the Pecci-Blunt Collection. Other purchases such as the Northwick copy in contemporary French morocco of Hamilton's Antiquities were made through Lathrop C. Harper Inc. of which Mr. Kissner was the principal owner from 1968 to 1979. His set of Piranesi also has a Northwick provenance. Finally his extraordinary run of Mirabilia Romae deserves brief mention even if he missed a copy of the Freitag edition in its original vellum wrapper in the Doheny sale since they were not acquired in a block purchase but patiently identified and hunted down one by one. The sheer number of these exceedingly rare early guide-books to Rome forms a true testimony to his tenacity and collecting stamina." With indexes of authors and of owners and binders.
Wrappers heavily creased pp 209/210 detached and restapled in well-thumbed and heavily annotated with scribbled prices names notes and marks - a working copy. List of prices realized and buyers loosely laid in somewhat torn and creased. Christie's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 3rd - 5th October, 1990 unknown

Venetian Illustrated Books of the Eighteenth Century. The Collection of John A. Saks. Christie's auction catalogue sale date: 10 June 1981
Christie's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 10th June 1981. Illustrated wrappers small 4to. 85 pp ills. 281 lots. A catalogue of the largest collection of such works ever offered at auction. With an index of artists and engravers. Estimates printed at end. From the preface: "During the final decline of the Venetian Republic in the eighteenth century Venice had grown to become the largest publishing centre in Italy producing many lavishly illustrated books both for its home market and export to other Italian cities and abroad. Outstanding among the numerous publishers were Giambattista Albrizzi Giambattista Pasquali and Antonio Zatta. They were important patrons of Venetian artists and commissioned painters such as Tiepolo Piazzetta Visentini Novelli and Bartolozzi to produce paintings and drawings for book illustrations. These were brilliantly executed often as charming vignettes depicting landscapes views and scenes or allegorical figures by a school of engravers working in close collaboration with the original artists. Most important among the engravers were Pitteri Cattini Zucchi Dal'Acqua and Baratti who produced books such as Piazzetta's editions of Tasso and Bossuet or Novell's frontispieces to Goldoni's works exhibiting the essence of bourgeois Venetian society in miniature. Venetian publishers tended to specialize in literature although there are such productions as Zatta's Atlas but some of the most splendid work may be found in the innumerable publications privately issued to commemorate special events such as the procession on assuming public office marriage or a daughters entry into the convent. They are well-represented here as "ingressi" "nozze" or "monacazione". These books of congratulatory verse were often magnificently produced sparing no expense with charming vignettes and fully decorated engraved borders. The present collection is remarkable in that most of the books are not in the usual leather bindings of the period but in the paper wrappers or boards in which they were originally issued. Some of these are unusually decorated with woodcut or stencil-printed armorial designs or embossed patterns. These illustrated books comparable to similar French works of the same period have been much neglected by collectors and until recently have remained uncharted by bibliographies. This catalogue describes the largest such collection ever to have been offered at auction a collection assembled over many years by John A. Saks of Greenwich Connecticut; lovingly and with great erudition. Wrappers creased notes on front inside wrapper some lot numbers highlighted and one or two sidelines. Modern First Editions. the Collection of Peter Apap Bologna. Christie's auction catalogue sale date: 5 November 1999
Christie's South Kensington London auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th November 1999. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 123 pp plates. 318 lots. A useful catalogue not least for its many plates each showing several dustwrappers. From the introduction: "Peter Apap Bologna's collection is all-embracing . but it is also highly personal. Alphabetically we can run the gamut from Chinua Achebe and Peter Ackroyd in spite of publishing the latter over many years I had never heard of his early work Ouch to Jeanette Winterson and John Wyndham. Indeed these interesting juxtapositions give the flavour of the collection. Naturally all the accepted great novelists - Golding Durrell Murdoch Naipaul Gordimer - are here. So too are the poets: Heaney Gunn Day Lewis Larkin. In a real sense we have a microcosm of what we could pretentiously call the culture of the last sixty or seventy years. Another pleasure gained from such a group of books is the evidence of quirky taste. There are oddities: the publications of the Cuala Press and Wobum Books; the self-publicationsof J.L. Carr Timothy Mo and Jill Paton Walsh; out of the way items by Tom Stoppard John Betjeman and John Fowles. And there are the writers of detective stories adventure novels and thrillers: Chandler Simenon Dick Francis and P. D. James of course but also neglected authors like Roy Vickers Edmund Crispin and Nicholas Blake. Here you can find a complete set of Booker Prize Winners Hornblower novels the exploits of Inspector Morse the experimentation of B. S. Johnson the originality of Jane Gardam or Jennifer Johnston the straightforwardness of John Grisham. You can be reminded of publishers once flourishing long defunct: John Lehmann Rupert Hart-Davis Macgibbon and Kee. You can find the names of publishers' editors John Guest Roger Senhouse Charles Monteith who inspired and encouraged their authors. You can revisit old favourites and gauge whether some writers who have flourished over the last few decades will still have currency in 2020. Martin Amis Justin Cartwright James Buchan" Fine. Christie's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 21st September 2005. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 121 pp plates ills. 118 lots. The sale comprised: Early Voyages to the PacificLots 1-28; The Golden Age of Pacific ExplorationLots 29-87; Voyages to the Arctic Lots 88-118. From the introduction: "During a four-year stay in Tasmania in the early 1940s my father Dick Sandwell sailed with an old yachting friend who had a keen interest in maritime history. Their voyages often took them to places explored by Cook D'Entrecasteaux Bligh and many others. Soon after returning to his home in Vancouver British Columbia he began to follow the tracks of such other 18th-century English and French navigators as Dixon Meares Vancouver and La Perouse. He began to collect the journals of those early seamen beginning with Anson's Voyage Round the World 1740-44 At first the collection had to do mainly with voyages in the South Pacific. Those about the North Pacific and the adjoining Arctic waters soon followed. As a result of participation in a ministerial tour of the Canadian Arctic in 1965 and a Canadian research mission to Siberia an earlier interest in Russian voyages was rekindled. Thus names such as Gmelin Krusenstern and Kotzebue began to appear. Consequently the collection is more properly described as one of "Voyages of exploration and discovery in the Pacific and Arctic principally in the 18th and 19th centuries'. Very Good.
