‎Books for Cooks : from the Collections of Stanley J. Seeger Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 15 July 2010‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 15th July 2010. Laminated illustrated wrappers small 4to. 120 pp colour ills. 154 lots. From the introduction by Anton Edelmann: "The collection covers the period from the sixteenth century to the present day. Not only does it give a fascinating insight of what went into the pot but it also provides a valuable history of cooking and the world surrounding it. There are books with recipes about health and prescriptions for the sick from 1544 when garlic vinegar and many herbs were beginning to be recognised as having mdicinal properties. In 1572 Gomez Miedes wrote about the health benefits of salt. Then in 1821 there is the German chemist turned culinary chemist R. Ackermann. . The collection then moves on to recipes by the French classic chefs who in my opinion have had such a great influence on our present day cooking . We see Antoine Careme 1823 Brillat- Savarin 1824 and Antoine Parmentier after whom the famous potato dish was named. Last but not least there is a large selection of English manuscripts and books on anything from cooking to gardening to napkin folding and table manners the latter should probably go into reprint in my opinion. There is a quirky publication on eels not cooking this time and one on cookery in the tropics in 1897. The collection comes up to the present day with classics such as Delia Smith The Two Fat Ladies Rick Stein Gordon Ramsay and my old friend Brian Turner. .Fjnally I have to say this is an amazing not complete by any means but that would not be possible collection of cookery books which allows us to understand how deeply good creative food is anchored in our culture through the centuries. Then and now! Near Fine. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 15th July 2010 unknown‎

‎The Library of John R. B. Brett-Smith. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 27 May 2004‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 27 May 2004. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 366 pp plates ills. 648 lots. From the introduction: "the library offered for sale is most of that which John Brett-Smith accumulated and retained as his personal collection at the time of his death supplemented by a few miscellaneous books which were the residue of his stock. It is dominated by the collection of English Literature of his favourite period: 1660-1730. Not the least important aspect of the Brett-Smith Library is the distinguished prominence of so many of the books. Indeed as the Index of Provenance below page 344 makes clear the vast range of notable collectors and libraries represented by the collection is virtually a selective guide to the history of English book-collecting over the past three-and-a-half centuries" The sale also included a group of works by "Elkanah Settle 1648-1724 self-styled "City Poet" featured in the library including a group encased in "Settle bindings'.' In the latter part of his career Settle became a purveyor of celebratory verses for the titled and wealthy and was responsible for initiating a style of binding that remained in vogue for more than two decades". From the introduction to Part I: " The lots in this catalogue comprise the first selection of highlights from one of the greatest libraries of first editions inscribed works manuscripts letters and annotated proofs by Joseph Conrad ever assembled and certainly the greatest amassed by a collector in modern times. ‎A Second Selection of Printed Books Mostly from the Fifteenth Century the Property of Mr J.R. Ritman Sold for the Benefit of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Amsterdam Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 5 December 2001‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December 2001. Illustrated boards 4to. 294 pp plates ills. 122 lots. From the introduction: "In the past quarter-century no collector of early printing probably has placed a stronger and more original focus on the textual contents of his acquisitions than J. R. Ritman. This has resulted in the formation of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica in Amsterdam an internationally famous and energetic library that has become a centre for research in Neoplatonic Hermetic and Rosicrucian thought of a kind that never existed before. In view of this foundation interest in the texts and textual significance of his books it seems more than appropriate attempt to provide in an extensive index to this catalogue an analytic guide to the textual contents of the approximately one hundred fifty incunables offered both here and a year ago in the Sotheby's sale of 6 December 2000 the sales designated as II and I respectively. Despite the masses of research on fifteenth-century printing that have been carried from the age of Panzer and Hain down to the present no incunable catalogue has attempted to provide a full and consistent record of the textual contents of the books it describes. The Author-Text index attempts to identify both authors and texts - two quite different categories - in as concise and unambiguous a way as possible citing for each whatever reference works seem to provide the most precise most useful and least ephemeral information. ‎The library of Marshall B. Coyne. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 5 June 2001‎

‎Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th June 2001. Illustrated laminated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 280 pp plates some colour ills. 325 lots. From the introduction: "Coyne became intrigued with the life and career of James Madison accumulating a rich collection of manuscripts documents and printed works by our nation's fourth chief executive which includes a 32-page autograph manuscript discussing the Constitution and its framers and a partial draft of his message to Congress in which he consoles a nation stunned by the Joss of Detroit to the British during the War of 1812. From this wellhead sprang the many other historical American manuscripts in the collection which range from Pilgrim times to the present day. Mr. Coyne acquired fine examples of all the presidents including a presidential pardon signed by William Henry Harrison during his first and only month in office and a letter by Lincoln to his military aide requesting documentation on the failed Hampton Roads Peace Conference with Confederate Leaders; most of the first ladies; all the Signers of the Declaration of Independence including the elusive autograph of Button Gwinnett; all the Signers of the Constitution; legion vice-presidents cabinet members and Supreme Court justices. Major military figures from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are also amply represented. A rare example in the hand of the schoolmaster and martyr spy Nathan Hale is perhaps one of only a dozen letters by him known to survive and the first to appear at auction since 1924. There is a bright cheerful autograph letter by Continental officer and traitor Benedict Arnold to his sister written while he was in the very midst of conspiring with the British to deliver them the plans of West Point. The towering dignified figure of Robert E. Lee is represented by a very fine copy of his magnificent valedictory General Orders No. 9 with emendations by his wife Mary Custis Lee; the same lot also includes a fair copy of those orders written out entirely by Mrs. Lee. Mr. Coyne's Americana includes printed material as well including both the vellum and paper issues of the Stone facsimile of the Declaration of Independence; the first publication of the United States Constitution in the 17 September 1787 issue of the Philadelphia newspaper The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser; a first edition in the rare original boards of Lewis and Clark's narrative of their 8000-mile journey westward to the Pacific; and the scarce Charleston broadside announcing the secession of South Carolina.
