‎Art at Auction : The Year at Sotheby's 1977-78. Two hundred & fourty-fourth season‎

‎Sotheby's Publications London first edition 1978. Cloth 4to. 496 pp colour plates ills. From the blurb: From the blurb: "The 1977-78 season at Sotheby Parke Bernet worldwide has been unusually varied and interesting crowned by sales in London of the collections of Robert von Hirsch and George Ortiz. The former was the most vaJuable private collection ever to come up for auction. Many of the finest objects are illustrated in this latest edition of Art at Auction and specialists from national museums and Sotheby's discuss various aspects of this superb collection. Among the contributors are Sir John Pope-Hennessy.and John Rowlands. The George Ortiz Collection of primitive works of art is also extensively illustrated and Sotheby's expert Robert Bleakley analyses the fascinating Lower Niger bronze figure. Many other important and varied collections have also come under the hammer on both sides of the Atlantic. Among them are the Broxbourne Library which prompted the vivid description of early printing in Italy by J.C.T. Oates of the Cambridge University Library and the Goodwin Collection of modern first editions which is discussed by the New York bookseller Robert Wilson. Also included are articles on the Hawkins Collection of Japanese sword-fittings the Heckett Collection and the Charell Collection of Toulouse-Lautrec lithographs. Sales in New York and Los Angeles have affirmed the continuing popularity of American art and 'Americana' reflected in the book by illustrations of several of these objects. Also featured is a survey by Thomas Norton of Sotheby Parke Bernet New York of the sale of the McDonough Collection of American paintings. Aspects of collecting nineteenth-century works are covered by several contributors including Shirley Bury and Linda L. A. Parry both of the Victoria and Albert Museum London. Colin Ford of the National Portrait Gallery London traces the career of Sir Cecil Beaton as a portrait photographer.Art at Auction illustrates all the most important objects which have come up for sale during the season and provides much serious discussion of the major items. ‎The Library of H. Bradley Martin. Part IV : Highly Important French Literature Sotheby's auction catalogue sale dates : 16 and 17 October 1989‎

‎Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the H. Bradley Martin Library sale held on 16th and 17th October 1989. Cloth cover ill 4to. unpaginated approx 400 pp profusely illustrated including many fullpage plates some in colour. 803 lots nos 520-1322 This part of the sale comprised Bradley Martin's superb collection of French literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries. "H. Bradley Martin was a great lover of all the literature of the Romantic period Lamartine Chenier Chateaubriand but he was also attracted by the revival of the novel at the hands of Balzac Flaubert Stendhal and Merimee. The poetry of the nineteenth century that of Hugo Baudelaire Verlaine for example naturally finds a place here. The collection moves into the twentieth century with Marcel Proust. A feature of the library is its collections of works by particular authors such as Balzac Sand and Hugo which are among the most important ever made. For Balzac the references to Pierre Duche or Gabalda are of lasting value. The two rare copies of Le Pere Goriot and La Peau de Chagrin derive from the library of Dr. Nacquart Balzac's personal physician and the library also includes his earliest works published under the pseudonyms of Saint-Aubin and Lord R'Hoone as well as numerous forgeries and first editions generally in original paper wrappers. Mr. Martin was not excessively concerned with the speculative value of his library. Alongside such prestigious items as a copy of Du cote de chez Swann inscribed to Anatole France and the various first editions of Baudelaire we find texts by less well-known authors such as Senancour 21 printed books an unpublished manuscript and letters and Corbiere. This quest for neglected authors accords perfectly with Verlaine's comment in Les Poetes Maudits where in speaking of Corbiere Rimbaud and Mallarme he states that 'one is hardly known another is unknown and the third is underestimated.' " - from the introduction. Also included were more than 100 autograph letters from Proust. Very Good. List of prices realized and list of estimates laid in. ‎The Fairfax Library and Archive Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 14 December 1993‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 14th December 1993. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. unpaginated approximately 400 pp plates ills. 541 lots. From the introduction: "The Fairfax collection of over 5000 pamphlets and tracts of the English Civil War is undoubtedly the most important and largest collection of such material ever to be offered for sale at auction. Never before in English history had the recording in print of political and military events and of all manner and shades of opinion been possible on such a scale and with such immediacy as in the Civil War: nothing it seems was said or done debated in Parliament or fought out with sword and cannon but that it was without delay committed to print. The Fairfax collection was largely put together over a period of forty years early this century by Albert Fairfax 1870-1939 who succeeded his father as the twelfth Baron Fairfax in 1900 and had returned to live and work in England from Virginia where the sixth Baron Fairfax had settled early in the eighteenth century. It was an act of family piety the main concern being to document the career of the great Parliamentary general Sir Thomas third Lord Fairfax 1612-1671 and of his father Ferdinando 1584-1647. But although accounts of individual battles and sieges form much of the core of the collection the scope was widened to include the political and religious background so that a whole panorama of the concerns and events of the years 1641 to 1649 unfolds itself. The collection was extended backwards to include certain material from the earlier years of the reign of Charles I and later to carry the story up to the Restoration. But it is for the years of the Civil War itself that the collection can take its place alongside the great holdings of Oxford and London. Near Fine. ‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 29th October 2004. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 142 pp colour ills. 104 lots. From the introduction: "The catalogue features highly important first editions inscribed presentation copies letters manuscripts original photographs and other extraordinary ephemera relating to Wilde. The 104 lots include such items as Wilde's annotated copy of Aristophanes' Clouds used by him while an under graduate at Oxford in 1877 lot 3; an exceptionally fine copy of his first regularly published book the Poems of1881 which was exhibited at the British Library in 2000 lot 11; his presentation copy of the acclaimed play A Woman of No Importance inscribed to his mother Speranza lot 64; his presentation copy of The Ballad of Reading Gaol inscribed to the drama critic William Archer lot 78; his presentation copy of The Importance of Being Earnest inscribed to his friend Arthur Clifton; the only known presentation copy of his rare privately printed historical tragedy The Duchess of Padua lot 28. These and other outstanding items offered including remarkable autograph letters by Wilde constitute what is almost certainly the finest collection of Wilde memorabilia remaining in private hands. One item of special resonance dating from Wilde's lifetime may illustrate the quality of the collection: namely the celebrated Tite Street catalogue for the sale on 24 Aprii 1895 of Wilde's household property lot 73. .and the sale includes as lot 89 one of the few known contemporary prints of the deathbed photograph taken by Maurice Gilbert with Robbie Ross's camera. ‎English Literature History Children's Books and Illustrations. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 17 July 2008‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 17th July 2008. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 308 pp colour ills. 342 lots. Included as lots 288-312 was the Bertram Potter collection of Beatrix Potter. From the catalogue: "This group of over twenty original illustrations books Christmas cards and letters by Beatrix Potter originates from the collection of the artist's brother Bertram Potter 1872- 1918. It represents one of the finest and most important collections of original artwork by Beatrix Potter to be offered for sale at auction. The core of the material is supplemented by items given by the artist to other members of the familyRemarkable for the wealth of early material many of the illustrations offered here probably date from the 1890s. Beatrix Potter would frequently create many different versions of the same drawing and this collection is especially important in providing alternative versions of some of her best early work. There are for example three watercolours from "The Rabbits Christmas Party" sequence. The images in other versions hitherto known from this series include one which featured on the upper cover of the 2005 Dulwich Picture Gallery exhibition catalogue another on the upper cover of Beatrix Potter in America Beatrix Potter U.S. Studies I Beatrix Potter Society 2006 and another which appeared within the 2006 film Miss Potter as the historically inaccurate gift presented by Beatrix to Norman Warne as a Christmas present. Of major importance is an abandoned watercolour for The Tale of Peter Rabbit which was evidently later redrawn for publication. A few corners folded otherwise Very Good.
