‎The Library of John R. B. Brett-Smith. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 27 May 2004‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 27 May 2004. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 366 pp plates ills. 648 lots. From the introduction: "the library offered for sale is most of that which John Brett-Smith accumulated and retained as his personal collection at the time of his death supplemented by a few miscellaneous books which were the residue of his stock. It is dominated by the collection of English Literature of his favourite period: 1660-1730. Not the least important aspect of the Brett-Smith Library is the distinguished prominence of so many of the books. Indeed as the Index of Provenance below page 344 makes clear the vast range of notable collectors and libraries represented by the collection is virtually a selective guide to the history of English book-collecting over the past three-and-a-half centuries" The sale also included a group of works by "Elkanah Settle 1648-1724 self-styled "City Poet" featured in the library including a group encased in "Settle bindings'.' In the latter part of his career Settle became a purveyor of celebratory verses for the titled and wealthy and was responsible for initiating a style of binding that remained in vogue for more than two decades". ‎The Library of Frederick B. Adams Jr Part II Thomas Hardy. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 7 November 2001‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 7th November 2001. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 202 pp colour plates ills. Lots 370-601. From the introduction: "Fred Adams . gradually patiently and with the utmost discrimination succeeded in building up one of the greatest Hardy collections ever assembled - not the largest in sheer size but unsurpassed in its overall quality and importance.it must surely be the last such collection ever to be in private as distinct from institutional hands. Although Fred was acquiring significant Hardy editions from early on - the three original first editions of The Dynasts for example including the 1903 issue of Part First that he bought from Heffers's during his brief Cambridge University experience - he seems to have turned decisively to the collection of truly unique materials only in 1934 after he had summoned the resolution to seize a classically irresistible but "unaffordable" opportunity to acquire a long sequence of Hardy to Gosse letters that had originally been put together by T. J. Wise. He subsequently captured Hardy's youthfully purchased copies of The Boy's Own Book and Shelley's Queen Mab at the J. M. Barrie sale in 1937 and made several shrewdly judged purchases at the Hodgson sale of Hardy's library in 1938. Following the death of his friend Carroll Atwood Wilson in 1947 he actively assisted in the compilation of the two-volume posthumous catalogue of Wilson's large and various collection and was later successful in securing some of the very best of Wilson's many Hardy items including several that had been in the Grolier Club's Hardy exhibition of 1940. At the Sydney Cockerell sale in 1956 he carried off among other things the very first lot comprising the presentation set of the Wessex Edition with Hardy's own corrections in some volumes and Cockerell's insertions throughout of letters from Hardy and others. He bought also at other sales including those of the A. Edward Newton and Paul Lemperly collections and although he came away empty-handed from both of the Sothebv sales of the extraordinary Howard Bliss collection - the New York dealer Lew Feldman having swept up all the lots at the first sale and all but one at the second - he did obtain during that collection's final negotiated dispersal just those materials that he had especially coveted.Fred of course was by no means entirely dependent upon the saleroom for his acquisitions. In the nineteen-thirties and forties and even well into the post-war years there were still people around who had known worked for or corresponded with Hardy and Fred directly or indirectly gathered in much interesting material from such sources: Hardy's own working drawings for the family tombstones at Stinsford for example the originals of the Macbeth-Raeburn illustrations to the Osgood Mcllvaine "Wessex Novels" edition and programmes and script materials related to the dramatisations of Hardy's novels performed by the Dorchester amateurs known as the Hardy Players. It is scarcely surprising that such a man should have been so strongly and consistently drawn towards the more biographical and immediately' human aspects of collecting - to letters manuscripts and inscribed and association copies all categories richly represented in the present sale. Fred's basic holdings of Hardy editions from magazine printings and first editions to Clement Shorter's and Florence Hardy's privately printed pamphlets were of course extensive and very nearly comprehensive but the first editions in particular had been selected and purchased almost without exception for the sake of their inscriptions - and the personal relationships thus evoked - rather than for any significance they might have as items checked off on a "wants" list Pages 39-44 present but detached numerous scribled prices etc. to text. ‎'That Sort of Bear' E. H. Shepard's Winnie-the-Pooh from the collection of Stanley J. Seeger and Christopher Cone. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 17 December 2008‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 17th December 2008. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 102 pp plates ills some colour. 42 lots. From the introduction: "The exceptional collection in this sale includes original Shepard artwork for dozens of what can only be described as iconic images: Pooh squeezing his way through Rabbit's front door and then after too much honey and Condensed milk getting stuck on the way out; Christopher Robin nailing Eeyore's lost tail back in place; six scenes of Pooh stoically attempting to master his honey-jar-boat The Floating Bear ; and Pooh and Piglet pursuing Woozle-tracks in the snow or struggling against the wind on that Blusterous day on which Piglet does a Very Grand Thing. These superlative examples of E.H. Shepards incomparable draughts manship together with accompanying books and ephemeral items perfectly evoke the timeless wit and enduring charm of the World of Pooh. Near Fine. ‎Sotheby's Monaco auction catalogue for the sale held on 16th June 1988. Cloth 4to. 205 pp numerous colour plates. 392 lots. In French. The first part of the sale in 1987 had been devoted to works on hunting; this second part was entirely devoted to ornithology and included works by Audebert. Audubon. Baer. Beebe. Bettoni. Boitard. Bonaparte. Bouchard. Bouteille. Buc'Hoz. Brown. Brisson. Buffon. Catesby. Collaert and many more. From an advertisement for the sale: "The sale is dominated by large groups of watercolours of outstanding quality by three French artists. Nicolas Robert 1614-1685 was certainly the finest Natural History artist of the 17th Century and his work usually watercolour on vellum is extremely rare; this is by far the largest group of watercolours by him left in private hands. Jacques Barraband 1767-1809 is best known for his illustrations to Le Vaillant's ornithological books examples of which are included in the sale. Some 120 of Barraband's large preparatory watercolours which are of breathtaking quality and in superb condition. A large group of watercolours by Edouard Travies 1805-after 1866 from the 1830's for editions of LeBuffon .is followed by a smaller group of working studies for lithographs which date from the end of the next decade and clearly show the artist's development. ‎A Second Selection of Printed Books Mostly from the Fifteenth Century the Property of Mr J.R. Ritman Sold for the Benefit of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Amsterdam Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 5 December 2001‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December 2001. Illustrated boards 4to. 294 pp plates ills. 122 lots. From the introduction: "In the past quarter-century no collector of early printing probably has placed a stronger and more original focus on the textual contents of his acquisitions than J. R. Ritman. This has resulted in the formation of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica in Amsterdam an internationally famous and energetic library that has become a centre for research in Neoplatonic Hermetic and Rosicrucian thought of a kind that never existed before. In view of this foundation interest in the texts and textual significance of his books it seems more than appropriate attempt to provide in an extensive index to this catalogue an analytic guide to the textual contents of the approximately one hundred fifty incunables offered both here and a year ago in the Sotheby's sale of 6 December 2000 the sales designated as II and I respectively. Despite the masses of research on fifteenth-century printing that have been carried from the age of Panzer and Hain down to the present no incunable catalogue has attempted to provide a full and consistent record of the textual contents of the books it describes. The Author-Text index attempts to identify both authors and texts - two quite different categories - in as concise and unambiguous a way as possible citing for each whatever reference works seem to provide the most precise most useful and least ephemeral information. Boards slightly duststained and a little bumped otherwise Very Good. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December, 2001 hardcover‎

‎Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the sale held on 29th November 2000. Laminated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 328 pp plates some colour ills. 394 lots. From the introduction: "Although the Park collection is about a third of the size of last year's Siebert sale and about one-tenth the size of the legendary Streeter sale it is considered to be among the most important collections of Americana offered for sale at auction during the past fifty years. Because of its breadth it is in many ways like a mini-Streeter. .The scope of the Park collection is broad. There are great areas of concentration. Examples of this are: Lewis and Clark Franklin and Franklin Imprints the American Revolution Native Americans and Western Exploration View Books Philadelphia and Pennsylvania 17th-century Americana the South and some spectacular manuscript material including extraordinary autograph letters signed by George Washington Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. There are numerous "high spots" in the collection including the Aitken Bible; Birch's Views of Philadelphia; the 1754 edition of Catesby; Franklin presentation copies as well as rare Franklin imprints; Hill's Picturesque Views of American Scenery; Hubbard's Present State of New England; Zenas Leonard's Narrative; Henry Lewis's Das Illustrirte Mississippithal; and two copies of J. ‎Incunabula from the court library at Donaueschingen. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 1 July 1994‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 1st July 1994. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 323 pp plates some colour ills. 326 lots. Introduction; Catalogue Descriptions; Appendix: Donaueschingen Incunables Traded in 1930 and Privately Sold to Baden-Wurttemberg in 1994; Index of Authors and Titles; Index of Cities and Printers; Index of Provenance; Index of Bindings; Illustrations of Binding Tools and Ownership Marks; Concordances: Hain - Copinger - Reichling - GW - Goff; Principal Works Cited; From the introduction: "In the late fifteenth century the young Count Wolfgang founding father of the house of Frstenberg displayed his pride of ownership of favorite manuscripts and early printed books at the time of course new printed books by conspicuously inscribing his name: Diss buck ist Wolffgang grauff du Frstenberg. These precious relics stored for centuries at the family's castle at the source of the Danube are the foundation stones of what developed in succeeding centuries into one of the great noble libraries of Europe: the Court Library at Donaueschingen. Sotheby's has for long been involved in the Furstenberg library. In June and July 1982 we sold at auction in separate catalogues a group of twenty major western illuminated manuscripts from the rich trove at Donaueschingen and a similar selection of some 400 printed books of science natural history and travel. In 1993 Sotheby's negotiated one of the largest private book sales in history when the state of Baden- Wrttemberg purchased for DM 48000000 great majority of the Donaueschingen medieval manuscripts. We now bring to auction approximately 400 Donaueschingen incunabula following our private sale to Baden-Wrttemberg earlier this year of 85 incunabula of special significance to the state libraries in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart see Appendix. The Donaueschingen Incunabula are an amalgam of secular and ecclesiastical chains of ownership which shed much new light on the history of ownership and use of early printed books in southwestern Germany. The central core is the surviving group of books bearing the inscriptions of Count Wolfgang Frstenberg 1465-1509 four of which are now offered at sale two others being included in the private sale of incunabula to Baden- Wrttemberg see Appendix. These are exclusively vernacular texts meant for secular amusement and instruction and commonly enlivened with woodcut illustrations: Steinhowel's German version of Boccaccio's De claris mulieribus; two editions of the fascinating collection of fables of Bidpai known as the Buch der Beispiele translated by Anton von Pforr; the Klagspiegl a German tract on judicial penalties of which a manuscript copy was also in the Donaueschingen library; the Arzneibuch of Ortolff von Bayerlantt a compendium of folk medicine Wolfgang's signature appears also in two manuscript copies. Typical reading tastes of the Germany nobility are reflected also in an early French edition of the chivalric romance Lancelot du lac in which Count Joachim Frstenberg grandson of Wolfgang entered an inscription in 1559 when he located the book after the death of his father Count Friedrich. Small sticker mark on front wrapper otherwise Near Fine. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 1st July, 1994 unknown‎

Boards bumped at lower fore-edge corners and front board slightly abraded there otherwise Very Good. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December, 2001 hardcover‎

‎The Pencarrow Collection of autographs including the newly discovered Beethoven quartet movement. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 8 December 1999‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 8th December 1999. Laminated illustrated boards 4to. 136 pp plates ills. 202 lots. From the introduction: "Perhaps the collection's most astonishing feature is that it has remained in obscurity for over 100 years most of the interesting items evading the attentions of scholars. There are many new and unpublished items here including letters by Charlotte Bronte Boswell. Burns Darwin Disraeli Edward VII George Eliot David Garrick Gordon of Khartoum Mendelssohn Mary Shelley and others: Charles Dickens reflects on a train crash the horror of which stayed with him for the rest of his life Winston Churchill defends his stance on the Boer War Lord Nelson professes his love to Emma Hamilton Bvron discusses the nature of good poetry. If that were the sum of the collection it would be remarkable enough. That it contains at least two items of international significance raises it to quite a different plane. First is a group of items relating to America and its Civil War. Among these items which include letters by Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee is a highly important unpublished and undocumented proclamation by Abraham Lincoln about Confederate prisoners and relating indirectly to the matter of slavery. This is a major discovery and adds new historical evidence to a crucial period of American history. the second discovery is even more remarkable and relates to Mary Ford's husband Richard 1796-1858 the noted traveller and author whose consummate Handbook for Travellers in Spain 1845 is regarded as a guide of the highest importance. Ford's travelling evidently began early. Shortly after graduating at Oxford in 1817 he visited Vienna where he encountered Beethoven. The composer not known for his unstinting amiability evidently liked his English visitor and gave him a souvenir. The autograph manuscript which presumably passed into the possession of Ford's third wife Mary bears a most interesting inscription signed by Richard Ford: 'This quartette was composed for me in my presence by Ludwig v. Beethoven at Vienna Friday 28th November 1817 Richard Ford'. Fred's basic holdings of Hardy editions from magazine printings and first editions to Clement Shorter's and Florence Hardy's privately printed pamphlets were of course extensive and very nearly comprehensive but the first editions in particular had been selected and purchased almost without exception for the sake of their inscriptions - and the personal relationships thus evoked - rather than for any significance they might have as items checked off on a "wants" list Near Fine.
