‎Sotheby London auction catalogue for the sales held on 27th - 28th April 1987. Cloth with mounted colour illustration on front board as issued 4to. 425 pp profusely illustrated with colour plates. 388 lots. The catalogue introduction claims this to be "the finest collection of botanical colour-plate books ever offered at auction". Robert de Belder a diamond merchant who bought and restored the Kalmthout Arboretum in Belgium in the 1950s built up the greatest private collection of botanical books in the world securing many of the very best copies from the Arpad Plesch collection the Massachusetts Horticultural Society Library virtually the entire rare book collection of the Horticultural Society of New York as well as many other distinguished collections. His collection was initially offered for sale en bloc without success before being acquired by Quaritch who finally consigned the colour-plate books to auction - in the process revolutionising price levels for this sort of material. Catalogued here are some 388 lots being the chief monuments of botanical illustration from the period 1600 -1900. Each lot is carefully described and annotated with the great majority of lots illustrated usually in colour. Edited written and illuminated for Georges d'Amboise 1460-1510 Cardinal Archbishop of Rouen Statesman Prime Minister and one of the greatest collectors and art patrons of the Northern Renaissance.This is an entirely secular manuscript filled with images of the pageantry and drama of the Hundred Years' War. It is one of the richest - perhaps the absolute richest - of all extant manuscripts of Froissart's Chronicle with nearly 200 paintings four of them as big as panels. in flawless condition it represents the pinacle of the work of the so-called Master of Petrarch's Triumphs. This artist may have trained in Tours under Jean Bourdichon and Jean Poyet but worked in Rouen "perhaps drawn by the patronage of Cardinal Georges d'Amboise Archbishop of Rouen."although some of his finest manuscripts were produced there for the King and Queen. For Louis XII he illustrated a splendid Les Triomphes by Petrarch in the Bibliotheque Nationale Fr.595 the book from which the artist takes his name and the Petites Heures of Anne de Bretagne in the same library Nouv. From the introduction: "This Beck Collection is one of the most refined and important private libraries of illuminated manuscripts assembled in the second half of the twentieth century. The collection is not unusually large - hardly more than thirty items but is quite extraordinary in its range and quality. It includes manuscripts from eleven countries. It extends from early eighth-century Merovingian France to the Florentine renaissance and beyond. It includes two books of the ninth century: possibly the oldest western manuscripts which could ever again be offered for sale The texts represented are remarkably varied too. The Bible is the most important text of Christendom and the sale begins with a fragment of a Merovingian Bible lot 1 and the most breathtaking ninth-century Gospel Book lot 2 the oldest manuscript of the Gospels in private hands. There is a splendid romanesque volume of works attributed to Orosius Augustine and Bede the great church fathers lot 6. There are books of private devotion too four early Psalters and no fewer than eleven Books of Hours illuminated in five different countries. Many manuscript collections might go no further than books of liturgy and religious life and devotion but the present collection includes a fascinating group of secular texts. There is a remarkable ninth-century manuscript of Aristo�e one of the earliest known copies of the text and perhaps the oldest truly secular book in private hands lot 3. Medieval science and astronomy are represented in the Dragmaticon of William of Conches lot 10 and in a fascinating miniature of the winds lot 18. The origins of chivalric literature are represented in the Alexander romance Les Voeux du Paon in what may even be the dedication copy lot 17 and to a great extent in the Anglo-Norman metrical Apocalypse lot 14 with almost a hundred frenzied miniatures of the end of the world. This is the last English Apocalypse in private hands and the only known example signed by its artist. The single most striking feature of the manuscripts in the collection is the extent and consistent quality of the illumination. Infinitely more art from the Middle Ages survives in manuscripts than in any other medium. There is painting here by some of the supreme artists and illuminators of the Middle Ages including Gottschalk of Lambach one of the very few romanesque artists known by name lot 6 the Master of the Murri Missal lot 21 the Master of Guillebert de Mets lot 23 Ser Ricciardo di Nanni lot 29 and Attavante degli Attavante lot 30. By any definition these were outstanding artists. Probably the two most extraordinary books major manuscripts from the very beginning of gothic painting are the great Psalter of Mechtild of Braunschweig made probably for the son of Henry the Lion infinitely sophisticated and of quality as high as found anywhere in Europe around 1200 lot 9 and the haunting and barbarian St. Blasien Psalter from the mountains of the Black Forest studded with gold and silver certainly the greatest German gothic manuscript in private hands lot 11. From the introduction: "Perhaps the collection's most astonishing feature is that it has remained in obscurity for over 100 years most of the interesting items evading the attentions of scholars. There are many new and unpublished items here including letters by Charlotte Bronte Boswell. Burns Darwin Disraeli Edward VII George Eliot David Garrick Gordon of Khartoum Mendelssohn Mary Shelley and others: Charles Dickens reflects on a train crash the horror of which stayed with him for the rest of his life Winston Churchill defends his stance on the Boer War Lord Nelson professes his love to Emma Hamilton Bvron discusses the nature of good poetry. If that were the sum of the collection it would be remarkable enough. That it contains at least two items of international significance raises it to quite a different plane. First is a group of items relating to America and its Civil War. Among these items which include letters by Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee is a highly important unpublished and undocumented proclamation by Abraham Lincoln about Confederate prisoners and relating indirectly to the matter of slavery. This is a major discovery and adds new historical evidence to a crucial period of American history. the second discovery is even more remarkable and relates to Mary Ford's husband Richard 1796-1858 the noted traveller and author whose consummate Handbook for Travellers in Spain 1845 is regarded as a guide of the highest importance. Ford's travelling evidently began early. Shortly after graduating at Oxford in 1817 he visited Vienna where he encountered Beethoven. The composer not known for his unstinting amiability evidently liked his English visitor and gave him a souvenir. The autograph manuscript which presumably passed into the possession of Ford's third wife Mary bears a most interesting inscription signed by Richard Ford: 'This quartette was composed for me in my presence by Ludwig v. Beethoven at Vienna Friday 28th November 1817 Richard Ford'. From the introduction by Paul Levy: "This archive to which I alone have had access will provide historians and students of philosophy with material for innumerable books and articles. No previous writer on Moore even knew of or mentioned the existence of his papers written for the secret society called the Apostles membership of which was the single most important association of Moore's life apart from his marriage and his family. In this collection there are twenty-one papers that he delivered to the Cambridge Apostles; the earliest "What End " is Moore's first foray into philosophy and there is a clear line of development from that paper to Principia Ethica. Moreover there are the papers he wrote for the Trinity College Sunday Essay Society several of which are early philosophical pieces and the unpublished text of his Passmore Edwards Settlement lectures on "The Elements of Ethics" the immediate precursor of Principia Ethica.
