From the introduction by Paul Quarrie: "There are just over 900 works in this sale in about 1000 volumes.Once again we see a single-minded no-nonsense and pretty all-embracing approach to the collection of books for practical reasons by a practically involved man. For the most part the books are on military science with some historical works and collections of plates on specific campaigns from Crete in the sixteenth century the siege of Breda in the seventeenth and the Seven Years' War in the eighteenth . There are also books on fencing duelling and the mange of horses including the Duke of Newcastle s famous book.as well as some works on farriery and veterinary science. There are also books on naval matters and ship building including several rare works in Dutch and a copy of John Charnock's History of marine architecture London 1800-1802 the most recent book in the collection. And there are a number of important books on fireworks. In addition to the military works there are books on architecture Vitruvius Palladio Labacco Fischer von Erlach the latter in both the Vienna printed first edition and the English translation and many others a few books on sculpture. and there are some works like Falda s Le fontane di Roma which are part architectural and part topographical. There are approximately 112 books or works printed in the sixteenth century 385 from the seventeenth century and 417 from the eighteenth. The bulk of the books are English and there are a number of previously unrecorded items of all periods but there are many in French Italian German Dutch Spanish one or two in Latin and Greek editions of the ancient writers on military matters and a couple in Russian. The George Abrams Collection. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale dates : 16-17 November 1989.
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 16th & 17th November 1989. Cloth paper cover illustration 4to 31 cm. unpaginated profusely illustrated including many coloured plates. 238 lots. It is remarkable that a collector of not excessive means should have been able over a relatively brief period to have formed so fine and wide-ranging a collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century printed books including so many volumes that from general freshness of condition and from quality of rubrication and decoration would stand out in any of the world's major collections. The Abrams collection of early printing reveals in many ways that it was formed by a calligrapher and graphic designer of distinction - a recent example of his work being Abrams Venetian the unusually readable and graceful typeface with a beautiful accompanying italic in which this catalogue is printed. Mr. Abrams' book collecting began with modern fine printing. Some fifteen years ago his focus shifted back in time to what may be considered the perennial source of the modern typographic movements: the earliest examples of European printing. Those who regularly handle early printed books are continuously if subliminally reminded of what William Morris was perhaps the first collector to grasp clearly: that many of the earliest printed books are not merely remarkable productions for their time; they are in fact highly successful solutions to a multitude of design problems of a kind that the modern graphic artist or typographer encounters daily in only slightly variant forms. They are or can be important teaching tools examples not to be copied but absorbed. As exempla of excellence the best printing of the fifteenth- and sixteenth-centuries is all the more effective for its lack of fuss its willingness to let the result speak for itself." - from the introduction. Important Natural History Books from the Glenbow Museum. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: April 23 1994
Sotheby's New York auction catalogue for the sale held on 23rd April 1994. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 38 pp 38 full-page colour plates. 38 lots. From the introduction: "Glenbow Museum's preeminent collection of natural history books with some of the finest 19th-century colour-plate books includes rare 19th-century folios by John Gould and Daniel Giraud Elliot and an outstanding 18th-century work by Cornelius Nozeman . Most of the natural history books were purchased from British dealers in the early 1960s mainly from Wheldon and Wesley in London. A few were purchased in New York. The subjects are primarily ornithological and combine scientific research with fine decorative art. The book collection has an almost complete set of John Gould's publications. This includes Gould's first multi-volume ornithological work the second of the folio series The Birds of Europe 1832-1837 the drawing for which was based on the important private and institutional collections of specimens in Europe. Gould's eight-volume magnum opus which occupied over half of his career is The Birds of Australia 1840-1869. A Monograph of the Trochilidae 1849-1887 considered Gould's masterpiece with its magnificent illustrations of hummingbirds as well as The Birds of Asia 1850-1883 unfinished at the time of his death and the popular five-volume The Birds of Great Britain 1862-1873 are included. Gould focused with obsessive clarity on the spectacle of the birds presenting striking forms and breathtaking plumage in carefully detailed renditions. Also in the collection is Richard Sharp's Monograph of the Jaradiseidae 1891-1898 which reproduces some plates from Gould's Birds of New Guinea. Another important work in the collection is Daniel Giraud Elliot's celebrated A Monograph of the Tetraoninae 1864-1865 for which he provided most of the drawings. As well as fine folios the collection includes full sets up to the late 1960s of the journals The Ibis 1859-1967 and The Auk 1884-1968. List of prices realized loosely laid in. Near Fine.
