Arthur Beresford Pite English architect. Twelve Autograph Letters Signed and one Autograph Note Signed all 'Beresford Pite' to Sir Henry Trueman Wood and G. K. Menzies Secretaries Royal Society of Arts on his Cantor Lectures on Town Planning.
Eleven of the items on his letterhead Royal College of Art South Kensington London SW7. The other two items from 21 Willow Road Hampstead NW. One from 1915 four from 1916 and eight from 1917. The thirteen items are in good condition on lightly-aged paper. All but one bear the purple oval stamp of the Royal Society of Arts and most are docketted. Totalling 10pp. 4to; 3pp. 12mo. The earlier letters are addressed to Wood and the later ones to Menzies. The first letter 14 August 1915 in which Pite proposes becoming a member of the Society is the only one not to concern the course of lectures. On 7 June 1916 he asks if 'the subject of Town Planning which owing to the operation of the Act of 1909 has increasing importance could be included in the Society of Arts series of Cantor Lectures' adding that Wood is 'probably aware of the increasing literature of the subject and that the Royal Institute of British Architects as issued directions to providers & advice to architects on town planning procedure. The subject presents many aspects to the Student and in practice divides itself between the Surveyor <> and architect and naturally has many aspects of public interest and urgency.' He proposes to submit a syllabus 'on the Architecture of Town Planning past & present' stating that he has been 'for many years a member of the Town Planning Committee of the R.I.B.A. & has lectured on the subject at the L.C.C. School of Building'. On 12 June 1916 he writes that he is enclosing 'a syllabus of a course of 5 lectures on Town-Planning' the 'historical aspect' of the subject being 'a large & important one' and ' this comparative study of achieved results' being 'important side by side with present day problems'. On 25 September 1916 he accepts Wood's 'proposals . to deliver a course of four lectures on "Town Planning" to be given weekly from January 29 next'. Among topics dealt with in the rest of the correspondence are the submission of manuscripts and authorship rights. Eleven of the items on his letterhead, Royal College of Art, South Kensington, London, SW7. The other two items from 21 Willow R unknown

Beyond Environment
Beyond Environment presents the potent interchange between architecture, Land Art, and Performance Art that emerged through Italian architect Gianni Pettena s idealized collaboration with American artists Allan Kaprow and Robert Smithson in the 1970s. Captivated by a journey to the USA in 1971, Pettena would converse with the American Midwest, a conversation culminating in his meeting with Robert Smithson in Salt Lake City. Earlier in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pettena s experiments in material trans- formations helped create some of the architect s most iconic works. Staged in an abandoned school and in a non-descriptive suburban house, and titled Ice House I and II, Pettena would pour water into the mold works he created around the buildings perimeter walls. Curing during the winter night to a coat of ice, the houses resonated with their conceptual predecessor, Kaprow s Fluids of 1967, as well as with an incomparable contemporary architectural sensibly concerned with the effects of variedly compounded, highly eidetic architectural surfaces. — Testi: Piccardo Emanuele, Wolf Amit. ARTS & ARCHITECTURE
arts & architecture 1945-54.
Köln: Taschen 2008. Facsimile Edition Limited to 5000 numbered copies. This is the first part 1945-1954 of Taschen’s facsimile edition of John Entenza's groundbreaking magazine which launched the Case Study House Program. “From the end of World War II until the mid-1960s exciting things were happening in American architecture: emerging talents were focusing on innovative projects that integrated low-cost materials and modern design. This trend was most notably embodied in the famous Case Study House Program which was championed by the era's leading American journal Arts & Architecture. Focusing not only on architecture but also design art music politics and social issues A&A was an ambitious and groundbreaking publication largely thanks to the inspiration of John Entenza who ran the magazine for over two decades until David Travers became publisher in 1962. The era's greatest architects were featured in A&A including Neutra Schindler Saarinen Ellwood Lautner Eames and Koenig; and two of today's most wildly successful architects Frank Gehry and Richard Meier had their debuts in its pages. A&A was instrumental in putting American architecture - and in particular California Modernism - on the map.†Publisher The supplementary booklet contains an original essay by former A&A publisher David Travers in English German French and Spanish plus a master index and tables of contents for the 118 issues of the magazine. A second part in 12 boxes containing 150 issues and covering the years 1955 to 1967 was issued in 2010. 10 Years consisting of ten boxes containing 118 issues in wrs. 6156 pages plus a supplementary booklet. illus.
