‎"Pour sortir du chaos et de l'arbitraire, les architectes ont toujours cherché à établir des dispositifs pour structurer un bâtiment en un "tout" décomposable en "parties", que l'on nomme composition. Après la deuxième guerre mondiale, le monde de l'architecture assiste au développement de nouveaux modes de conception dont l'un d'eux procède par stratégies. Le phénomène, qui est d'abord présent en peinture et en sculpture, a des répercussions sur la manière d'envisager ce que l'on nomme jusqu'à présent "composition". Certains artistes américains voient la nécessité d'échapper à la composition en rejetant toute idée d'équilibre et de mode relationnel entre les parties qui sont les constituants d'une oeuvre composée. En architecture, ce nouveau mode de conception qui procède par stratégie cherche à répondre aux conditions urbaines, programmatiques et culturelles auquel un bâtiment contemporain doit répondre. La pression foncière engendre une augmentation de la densité urbaine qui oblige, par non-choix, certains bâtiments de se confronter aux limites rendant impossible d'envisager sa conception selon des préceptes compositionnels. À partir de 1960, un bâtiment ou un complexe doit pouvoir évoluer, faisant par conséquent apparaître une logique de plan indéterminé, donc non composé. L'épuisement de la composition pousse certains architectes à trouver des agencements tout faits dans le monde visible et à les intégrer par transfert. L'hypothèse consiste à affirmer que ces stratégies engendrent des agencements neutres qui viennent se substituer aux plans composés, le neutre étant entendu comme un dispositif dont les éléments sont sans accents qui ne puissent se dégager de l'ensemble. Comprise comme un ensemble d'actions faisant correspondre des formes à des paramètres, une stratégie implique les notions de subjectivité et d'effacement de l'auteur d'un projet car ce mode de conception procède par automatisme de la forme. Cette étude passe en revue et analyse ces nouveaux agencements au travers de bâtiments ou de projets récents et en les mettant en parallèles avec les arts plastiques. Elle procède mettant des mots sur certaines formes complexes et cherche à offrir des clés de lecture de l'architecture contemporaine."‎
