Burrowes, Thomas H.
PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL ARCHITECTURE. A MANUAL OF DIRECTIONS AND PLANS FOR GRADING, LOCATING, CONSTRUCTING, HEATING, VENTILATING AND FURNISHING COMMON SCHOOL HOUSES.
276 p. Colored lithographic frontispiece of a large idyllic school building, printed by Duval, from the drawing made by L. Crepon, for Sloan & Stewart, Architects, Philadelphia. Illustrated throughout with in-text wood engravings, showing: elevations and floor-plans for schoolhouses of various designs; ventilation; school furniture; apparatus (including globes, maps, scientific machines, etc.); etc. Foxed. Narrow quarto. Original full blue cloth binding, stamped in gold gilt and blind; with the original binder's ticket ("Hamilton, Binder, Harrisburg") intact. An original printed (1856) notice on the front pastedown indicates that this is a costly publication, of great intrinsic value, aside from the illustrations furnished by the Architects. The edition is limited." Thomas Henry Burrowes (1805-1871) was the fourth president of the Pennsylvania State University, serving from 1868 until 1871. He also served as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1835 until 1839; and was also the founder of the PA State Normal School System of Teacher's Colleges. This book had enormous influence throughout the United States, and shaped to look and management of schools for many decades. A very good example of an important book.
