Special attention is given to factors contributing to the formation of taste and the emergence and transmission over time of concepts of art and beauty and the means by which they were identified and judged. The approach facilitates encounters with the material in ways that give rise to new insights into how the ancient Greeks experienced their own visual culture and how Greek art may be understood by us today. Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe, a British citizen born in Oxford, studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy, before moving to the United States to undertake undergraduate and graduate studies in art history. He subsequently received a Ph.D. in art history from Bryn Mawr College and is currently the Eleanor Barton and Aileen ?Ninie? Laing ?57 Endowed Professor in Art History at Sweet Briar College. ‎Summary This book collects papers presented at two multi-disciplinary gatherings which sought to examine concepts belonging to the semantic field of religious belief. The collection sets out from the observation that the relevant terms are ambiguous and equivocal, and indeed that this ambiguity persists in the scholarly literature in the humanities. It is therefore important to historicise these terms adequately and to clarify their development and transformation over time. This involves a sustained engagement with key discourses - logic, history of religion, epistemology, political history - of significant intellectual heterogeneity. Platonism fundamentally informs classical and patristic Christian reflections as well as the thought of their medieval heirs. It carries with it a tension between 'opinion' and supra-rational certitude which is exploited by Christian thinkers up to and including scholastic theologians. These thinkers insist above all on the existential dimension of a certitude which seeks to establish a privileged link with the divine. It involves the attempt to harmonise the ritual and social aspects of religious practice with the individual urge towards transcendence, a quest which has been bequeathed to modernity and still largely defines the nature of contemporary Western social engagement with religion. Kennis van en vooral begrip voor die ambachtsgilden is daarom belangrijk. Van de interne organisatie van die ambachtsgilden is gezien het informele karakter tot nu toe echter weinig bekend. De gilden gebruikten vaak penningen. Hun zogenaamde gildepenningen onthullen een en ander over die interne organisatie. De gangbare gedachte dat gildepenningen presentiepenningen zijn, is grotendeels juist, maar verdient nuancering. Welke andere functies hadden ze? Hoe werden ze gebruikt? Wat betekenden ze voor de interne organisatie van ambachtsgilden? Hoeveel zijn er eigenlijk nog en hoeveel waren er? Hoe zien ze eruit en waaraan herken je ze? Waar kwamen ze voor? In de dissertatie Gildepenningen: hun rol binnen ambachtsgilden van de Noordelijke Nederlanden geeft de auteur antwoord op deze en nog vele vragen. Gildepenningen bestrijken bovendien een klein en fascinerend gebied binnen de numismatiek. Ze staan vol symbolen van hun ambacht, soms ook met raadselachtige tekens. De namen of nummers die erop zijn aan te treffen, maken elke penning tot een uniek exemplaar, waarachter vaak een boeiende geschiedenis schuilt. Gildepenningen poogt een bijdrage te leveren aan het hedendaagse onderzoek naar ambachtsgilden. De hernieuwde aandacht binnen de historiografie van het gildeonderzoek heeft geleid tot een meer positieve beeldvorming rond ambachtsgilden. Little has been written in English about the surviving Neolithic and aboriginal Italic remains of Puglia, its rich architectural heritage of Greek, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, Angevin French, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and even its modern monuments. This book focuses on the important Islamic contribution to the architecture of Puglia, a contribution that was centered in the once Muslim city of Lucera and subsequently came to be of significance for the building of Christian cathedrals and churches in this beautiful region, little known to the outside world.? Lucera exemplifies all the periods of architecture noted above, and is, in addition, unique because it was a protected Muslim island in a sea of Christianity during the High Middle Ages - at the very time Christians were conducting crusades against the infidel. Thus the individuality of the place stands alone, among the many ancient cities of Puglia, because it was once a Muslim world. This book shows how Lucera had always been an important center in ancient times and how it came to be an Islamic city. It spotlights the accomplishments of the Muslims, and the influence they left - despite the brutal extermination they endured in the early 14th century - on the architecture of Lucera and other cities in north and central Puglia, including such important centers as Troia, Trani, Bitonto, Canosa, Altamura, Gravina, Giovinazzo, Terlizzi, Pietramontecorvino, Bisceglie, Ruvo, Castel del Monte, Molfetta, Bovino, San Severo, and Foggia. Thus the seventeen towns and cities whose architecture is studied and illustrated in this volume serve to highlight the Islamic legacy in Puglia, a part of Italy which is known - and revered by those who know - for its archaeological, classical, and Romanesque relics. ‎Ausstellung 30. August - 19. Oktober 1997. Im Almanach des Blauen Reiters ver ffentlichten Franz Marc und Wassily Kandinsky 1912 auch afrikanische Skulpturen aus Kamerun, neben zahlreichen Bildern unterschiedlicher Ethnien, Zeichnungen von Kindern, Laien sowie Volkskunst und Beispiele aus der europ ischen Kunst. Gesucht und entdeckt wurde in der afrikanischen Kunst das "Urspr ngliche", die gro e Kraft aller tief empfundenen Kunst. Der Blaue Reiter, der keine strenge programmatische Ausrichtung verfolgte, griff mit dem Blick auf Afrika einen Aspekt auf, den Picasso 1905 bei seiner ersten Begegnung mit afrikanischer Kunst thematisierte und den die " Fauves "-K nstler fast leitmotivisch verfolgten. Wie die K nstler der "Br cke" in Dresden, so gingen auch die M nchner "Blauen Reiter" in die V lkerkundemuseen, um f r ihre eigene Kunst dort Anregungen zu finden. Seit dieser ersten ffnung der Augen durch die Avantgardisten in der Zeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg ist das Interesse an afrikanischer Kunst lebendig geblieben. Zu berraschend und origin r sind die vielf ltigen Gestaltungsmittel im plastischen Bereich, um nur in der einen oder anderen Lesart aufgebraucht werden zu k nnen. Neben formalen Kriterien ist auch der Umgang mit den unterschiedlichen Materialien voll gro er berraschungen. In der Sammlung Bareiss sind zahlreiche Masken, Skulpturen, St be, Throne u. a. vorhanden, die nicht unter puristischen Gesichtspunkten "bereinigt" wurden, sondern noch Textile, Federn, Bastgeflecht etc. haben und so die Verbindung mit dem Kost m des T nzers aufzeigen. Die Skulpturen lassen so trotz der Statik musealer Pr sentation ihren "bewegten" Sinn erkennen. Unter dem Gesichtspunkt einer von Aktion und Performance belebten Kunst erhalten so diese afrikanischen Kunstwerke eine neue Qualit t. Zahlreiche Abbildungen in dem Text von Christopher D.
