Celui-ci acquiert a partir de 1630 plusieurs tableaux de Rembrandt, dotes d'une extraordinaire energie, egalement visible dans ses gravures et dessins, veritable contrepoint aux peintures. Les annees 1652-1669 sont celles du ? style tardif ? de Rembrandt, qui atteint un sommet dans son art, comme en temoigne le Portrait d'Arnold Tholinx (1656). Le style du maitre se trouve en rupture la peinture contemporaine neerlandaise, realiste, lisse et subtile. Rembrandt, lui, simplifie les formes et les couleurs. Ses dessins deviennent comme ? cubistes ? , sa palette se restreint et va a l'essentiel.
