‎Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) was one of the best still-life painters of the seventeenth century. His work, which is enchanting to the eye, has always enjoyed international fame. Throughout his painting career of nearly sixty-years, de Heem continued to search for new and better ways to depict his subjects. He trained several pupils and had countless followers and imitators, in the Netherlands as well as abroad, and throughout the centuries. The fact that he was active in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands enhanced his success and fame. He worked successively in Leiden, (presumably) in Amsterdam, in Antwerp, in Utrecht and again in Antwerp. De Heem is perhaps best known for his exuberant floral still lifes, which, however, were mainly created after 1660. By then, already for decades, he had painted still lifes of many themes and motifs, and in a variety of sizes, modest as well as luxurious. In Antwerp he had developed the large, rich still lifes which earned him part of his renown. This comprehensive monograph written by Fred G. Meijer, contains the complete catalogue of de Heem's oeuvre. Volume 1 includes an introduction, a biography and description of the development of his work. Volume 2 contains the catalogue raisonn of all paintings now known by de Heem, as well as several appendices. Fred G. Meijer (1955) graduated from the Reinwardt Academie in 1980 and shortly after started at the RKD, Netherlands Institute for Art History, in The Hague, where he worked until mid-2017, lastly as Senior Curator in the department of Old Netherlandish Painting. Subsequently, he founded Fred G. Meijer Art History providing art-historical advice and texts. His main field of interest is still-life painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, but his specialist knowledge concerns many areas of painting and drawing from c.1600-1850, and related subjects. He published numerous articles, (contributions to) catalogues of exhibitions and collections, and wrote the catalogues of still-life collections in Rotterdam (1989) and Oxford (2003) and published A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still-life Painters [.] with A. van der Willigen (2003). In 2016 he was awarded the degree of doctor for his research concerning Jan Davidsz. de Heem on which this book is based‎

Those familiar with Michiels' work will know that his exhibitions are forever surprising, in both approach and form. This time around he is not only presenting a new series of paintings and works on paper, but also joyful new ceramics and transparent glass works that stand in the space and hang against or at odds with the wall? As always, Michiels also made a playful booklet for the occasion of his exhibition, assembling his 'surrealist' poems and pamphlets with a selection of recent works. Painter and poet Fred Michiels ( B 1966, lives and works in Sambreville) has fully dedicated himself to abstraction in all its propositions and forms. The artist continually creates new challenges for himself: he paints in order to create spaces of possibility. Visual information from a variety of sources, cultural references and abstract forms alike, intermingle in a cheerful way. His work is instinctive and unplanned; straightforward and free. The abstractions are never limiting, but rich in visual experiences. For almost 30 years and with a great sense of humour, Michiels has investigated the status of painting. ‎Westerbork, Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, Meuselwitz ?Het laatste transport naar Auschwitz is vertrokken. Iemand in deze trein zal de honderdduizendste zijn, maar niemand zal hem feliciteren.? Het is een van de talloze verwijzingen die Fred Schwarz doet in Treinen op dood spoor naar de transporten die vanuit kamp Westerbork vertrokken. Niet vreemd, want hij heeft ze allemaal gezien, bijna honderd deportatietreinen. Hij ervoer dagelijks dat het leven van de gevangen Joden in het kamp altijd draaide om de trein. De trein die familieleden, vrienden, buren en bekenden deed vertrekken. Treinen op dood spoor is een schatkamer voor wie informatie wil over kamp Westerbork. Maar het is ook een liefdesgeschiedenis. En daarmee is het meer dan een verslag, dat alleen de persoonlijke geschiedenis behelst, maar in wezen een geschiedenis van het kamp in de periode juli 1940 tot september 1944. Samen met de brieven van Etty Hillesum en het dagboek van Philip Mechanicus behoort Treinen op dood spoor van Fred Schwarz tot de meest waardevolle egodocumenten over Westerbork. Dirk Mulder Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork Fred Schwarz kwam in 1938 op vijftienjarige leeftijd vanuit Wenen naar Nederland, waar zijn broer Frits al eerder naartoe was gevlucht. Fred bracht eerst een half jaar door in een vluchtelingenpension in Amsterdam en vervolgens een jaar in Eindhoven in een tehuis voor jonge Joodse vluchtelingen. Samen met vele lotgenoten werd hij in juli 1940 ondergebracht in vluchtelingenkamp Westerbork, dat in 1942 door de Duitsers getransformeerd werd in een doorgangskamp naar de concentratie- en vernietigingskampen. De Duitstalige Joden genoten in het Durchgangslager Westerbork als Dienstleiter of als Alte Kampinsassen over het algemeen een enigszins bevoorrechte positie. In september 1944 werd Schwarz op transport gesteld naar Theresienstadt en vervolgens naar Auschwitz-Birkenau en Meuselwitz, een subkamp van Buchenwald. Toen in april 1945 de Amerikanen oprukten werden door de Duitsers de concentratiekampen in allerijl ge vacueerd; na een avontuurlijke tocht die liep via Graslitz en Speyer wist Fred Schwarz uiteindelijk zijn vrijheid te herwinnen. Fred Schwarz (Wenen 1923 ? Badhoevedorp 2012) leerde in 1942 in Westerbork zijn latere vrouw kennen, Klaartje (Carry) van Leeven, waar hij na de oorlog twee kinderen mee kreeg, Rolf en Madelon. Hij werkte direct na de oorlog, net als in Westerbork als naaimachinemonteur. Zijn loopbaan eindigde bij een groot Amerikaans concern, als manager in Europa voor aluminiumlegeringen. Na zijn pensionering publiceerde hij in 1994 zijn herinneringen en gaf veel lezingen over zijn Holocaustervaringen.‎

‎Uit een, op het oog, oneindig aantal koeien van het over de hele wereld verspreide ras Frisian-Holstein selecteerde Henk Pecters een beperkt aantal. Uit de gekozen huiden sneed hij een viertal rechthoekige stukken van verschillende omvang en spande die op schilderij spieramen. De stukken hebben ieder een eigen uitdrukking. Het n is gehuld in een monochrome sluier, van een ander lijken de vlammen af te slaan. Erotiserend zijn ze alle. Hier staan de haarpluimen overeind, daar is de huid glad en betekend als een nevel van sterren. Henk Peeters - de medeoprichter (in 1958) van De Informele Groep en (in 1960) van NUL - voltooide recent zijn nieuwe project, Frisian-Holstein geheten: uitsnedes uit koeienhuiden als schildersdoek opgespannen op spieramen. Deze kunststukken worden in de herfst van 1998 in kunstruimtes in Finsterwolde, Beetsterzwaag en Delft getoond, in combinatie met werk uit de NUL -periode. Peeters tastbaar verschijnt als catalogus bij deze tentoonstelling en bevat een essay van de kunsthistoricus Fred Wagemans die de tactiele dimensie van de kunst van Henk Peeters onderzoekt en de vraag beantwoordt in hoeverre dit project voor het eerst na NUL een wending geeft aan zijn werk.
