"The 28-metre-long depiction of Marmara Sea Walls, rendered in watercolour by the Istanbulite Chief Engineer Dimtriadis Effendy in 1875, has been preserved at he Istanbul Archaeological Museums since it was donated to Müze-i Hümâyûn (The Imperial Museum) in 1917. This publication was prepared in order to introduce this important document, which has been available to be studied by scholars, to a wider audience. Also within the scope of the project, to be able to allow the preservation of the original document, a one to one scale copy of the scroll was produced and presented to the Museum.". Dimitriadis Efendi is the son of Dimitri Efendi ofthe Ottoman Greeks. He studied at the Greek school in Beyoglu and later at the French Missionary Schools and received lessonsin mathematics from a private teacher. He was speaking Turkish, and able to read and write in French and Greek. In 1871, he joined the Greek Philosophical Syllogos of Constantinople. He acted as a permanent member of the Archaeological Committee of the Society between 1871 and 1876, and as a member of the Science Committee of the Society from 1876 to 1882. He gave lectures on Practical Geometry, Applied Geometry, and Applied Engineering. On 31 May, 1882, he was appointed as the Umûr-u Nâfia Mühendisi of the Province of Thessaloniki. In consideration of his services, he was later decorated with the Fourth class of the Order of Medjidie on 22 September 1890 and to being promoted to the rank of assistant chief engineer, he was also appointed as the structural ccommissioner of waterworks. His Marmara Sea Walls is a drawing and watercolour on paper, with a size of 47,7x2800 cm. The lower, righthand corner bears the signature of G. A. Demetriades, dated 1875. The scroll contains the Marmara Sea façade of the Istanbul Walls, starting from the Seraglio Point and reaching all the way to the section located just before Yedikule. It could be observed that the names of some doors, mosques, pavilions, and piers were marked on the scroll with a pencil, sometimes in Arabic and at other times in Latin letters. The expressions written in pencil on certain parts of the walls and bastions...". ‎Andre Bauchant (1873-1958) is one of those French artists long known as 'naive painters' for whom the term 'modern primitives' would be more appropriate. Besides landscapes of the Touraine countryside and pictures of flowers and birds, he painted poetic and mythical visions. A horticulturalist by profession, he did not embark on his career as a painter until he was 46. His work is marked by his close affinity with nature and his passion for ancient mythologies. In 1921, Bauchant exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where he came to the attention of Amedee Ozenfant and Le Corbusier, who became Bauchant's mentor and a passionate collector of his work. Andre Bauchant's position in the shadow of his far more famous fellow-painter Henri Rousseau is unjustified. ‎Door zijn tijdgenoot Philippe Baert, secretaris van de Brusselse kunstacademie, werd Jan Baptist Simoens (1715-1779) als de belangrijkste Gentse architect uit de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw beschouwd. Het is de enige die is opgenomen in zijn Memoires sur les sculpteurs et architectes des Pays-Bas. In de 19de en 20ste eeuw is dat beeld geleidelijk aan afgebrokkeld. Recent onderzoek heeft echter aangewezen dat dit negatieve artistieke beeld van Simoens dient bijgesteld. Die ommekeer is vooral bewerkstelligd door de vondst van de korte biografische nota, die de neef van Simoens, August Bernaert, rond 1780 naar Baert opstuurde, vergezeld van een tekst getiteld Memorie nopende de wercken, een memorie die door Simoens zelf kort voor zijn dood is opgesteld. Omdat uit de nieuwe archiefgegevens over Simoens bleek dat een aantal van zijn belangrijkste werken in het Land van Aalst gerealiseerd werden (abdijen van Geraardsbergen, Grimminge, Ninove en Sint-Martens-Lierde; kasteel van Leeuwergem) besloot het bestuur van de geschiedkundige vereniging Het Land van Aalst om een tentoonstelling aan zijn oeuvre in het Land van Aalst te wijden en daartoe verder opzoekingswerk te verrichten. Dit onderzoek brengt een schat van nieuwe gegevens aan het licht en voert ons terug naar Gent, naar het milieu van de Gentse Tekenacademie en naar de rol die Simoens daar gespeeld heeft. Simoens introduceerde er het classicisme. Het classicisme was bij uitstek de stijl die uitdrukking gaf aan de ideeen van de Verlichting. Het was de stijl die door het Oostenrijkse gouvernement in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden gepropageerd werd. Een samenvattende bewerking van dit onderzoek, met het accent op de illustraties, vormt het onderwerp van een nieuwe publicatie in de reekst Kleine Cultuurdgidsen, uitgegeven door het Provinciebestuur van Oost-Vlaanderen.‎

‎Laurent-Beno t Dewez (1731-1812), court architect to Charles of Lorraine, was the most outstanding architect of his time in the Southern Low Countries. ‎The European perspective opened up markedly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a whole new world unfolded. Explorers, traders and diplomats committed their travelling experiences to paper in journals and reports. They sketched out their impressions of recently discovered territories, making it possible for us today to see how they viewed other cultures at that time. These travel narratives may have been embroidered with a certain degree of fantasy at times, nevertheless, they also frequently provided precise descriptions of exotic regions. They were important sources of information for cartography, which underwent an explosive evolution as a result. Navigational knowledge also grew considerably as a consequence of the traveller's urge to explore. After all, maritime expansion on a vast scale led to a need for new techniques and instruments in order to reach destinations quickly and safely. The development of cartography, in which Gerard Mercator played a pivotal role, was in turn responsible for expanding the mobility of Europeans as a whole. It was not uncommon for adventurous sixteenth-century travellers to embark on lengthy journeys as part of a trade mission or in connection with their education. One such young adventurer was Balthasar III Moretus. He made several journeys throughout Europe, including one to Italy, and kept journals of his observations on the way. Mercator: Exploring New Horizons maps out literally and figuratively this fascinating period of interplay between European travelling behaviour and the development of cartography.‎
