Nine Chains To The Moon
New York: Doubleday Anchor. Very Good. 1971. Reprint. Paperback. This is a trade sized paperback book. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued thus without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. There is some light bumping and rubbing to the edges of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked initials on the half title page. "This title of this book was chosen to encourage and stimulate the broadest attitude toward thought - if in imagination all of the people of the world were to stand upon one another's shoulders they would make nine complete chains between the earth and the moon. If it is not so far to the moon then it is not so far to the limits - whatever whenever or wherever they may be." "Fuller taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina during the summers of 1948 and 1949 serving as its Summer Institute director in 1949. There with the support of a group of professors and students he began reinventing a project that would make him famous: the geodesic dome. Although the geodesic dome had been created some 30 years earlier by Dr. Walther Bauersfeld Fuller was awarded United States patents. He is credited for popularizing this type of structure. One of his early models was first constructed in 1945 at Bennington College in Vermont where he frequently lectured. In 1949 he erected his first geodesic dome building that could sustain its own weight with no practical limits. It was 4.3 meters 14 feet in diameter and constructed of aluminium aircraft tubing and a vinyl-plastic skin in the form of an icosahedron. To prove his design Fuller suspended from the structure's framework several students who had helped him build it. The U. S. Government recognized the importance of his work and employed his firm Geodesics Inc. In Raleigh North Carolina to make small domes for the Marines. Within a few years there were thousands of these domes around the world." . Doubleday Anchor paperback

Fullerton, Mark D.
GREEK ART
Since antiquity, the period from 480 to 323 BC in Greece has been considered to be the high point, the Classical era, of Hellenic culture. At that time, the values and customs of ancient Greece received an especially lucid expression in the visual arts. In this new overview, the political, social, and religious functions of Greek art are given fresh life, with chapters focusing on issues such as the relationship between visual narrative and history; the role of artistic style in the construction of meaning; and how personal and communal identity was carried by the imagery on intricately decorated pottery and jewelry, naturalistic wall-paintings, and public buildings across the Greek world. Using the Parthenon as a paradigm monument, Mark Fullerton examines the principles of classical sculpture, architecture, and painting to explore all phases of Greek art from its birth around 900 BC to its incorporation into the art of the Roman Empire. Combining the latest archaeological discoveries with new scholarly methods, Fullerton presents a history of Greek art and the idea of the classical through a range of media and materials, including Archaic statues from the Aegean islands, the gold and ivory of Macedonia, to the great Hellenistic monuments of the Greek east. Mark D. Fullerton is Professor and Chairperson in the Department of History of Art at the Ohio State University. His research centers on Roman, Greek, and Hellenistic sculpture and he has published work on Roman art. ; 9.1 X 6.3 X 0.6 inches; 176 pages

FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES VINTAGE BOOKLET
A Guide to English and French Furniture of the Eighteenth Century.
Holland Michigan.: Baker Furniture Inc. Sixth Edition. 1943. Booklet black and white photo illustrations 48pp 10 1/2 x 7 inches gilt decorative paper wrappers. A couple of soiled spots to cover; very good clean condition. A statement on the title page printed in a potpourri of fonts describes the illustrated volume as "A New and Unusual Treatise Regarding the Use Manufacture and Care of Choice Reproductions; intended for Pleasure and the Interest of All who enjoy Fine Things." An insert cautions "As most of our production is now devoted to the war effort some of the furniture shown in these pages cannot be obtained. However your dealer has or can obtain for you full information concerning the Baker furniture still available." The volume aims to address the question: "What constitutes a truly fine reproduction" The question is answered in a chapter which describes the firm's owner trolling France and England looking for a unique piece of furniture then employing a master cabinet-maker to create in situ a reproduction that captures every detail of the original. This copy is then shipped to Michigan to serve as a master model for further reproductions. On other occasions however the original is sent direct to Michigan to serve as the master model. Regarding the intricacies of reproduction we are informed of the demands imposed in choosing fine wood in creating a lustrous finish in selecting the finest materials where upholstery is required. A capsule history of English and French furniture styles of the 18th century is next provided and a final chapter provides opaque attributions regarding the provenance of the original pieces used as models for the knock-offs pictured throughout; for example: "The black and gold Regency chair . was copied from a model purchased in High Wycombe England. . The fine George I wing chair was reproduced from an original antique owned by a New York dealer"; etc. More and less than you might wish to know. . Baker Furniture, Inc. unknown
