‎Bij het grote publiek is Jean Brusselmans misschien niet zo bekend, ten onrechte. Het is een kunstenaar die nog steeds een grote moderniteit uitstraalt. Hij is geboren te Brussel in 1884 als tweede van vier kinderen in een eenvoudige maar boeiende familie. Zijn vader was een overtuigd anarchist. Hij huurt met een oud-studiegenoot, Rik Wouters, een atelier op een zolderverdieping in de Twaalf Apostelenstraat in Brussel. In 1907 wordt zijn inzending voor de Goncourtprijs door de jury afgewezen. Jean is woedend en snijdt het behoorlijk grote schilderij in stukken, iets wat hij later zeer betreurt. Het is dankzij de steun van zijn vrouw en de belangstelling en aanmoediging van tal van andere kunstenaars en vrienden dat hij verder schildert en werkt, zijn kunst wordt door de meesten niet begrepen of gewoon afgewezen. Hij is een buitenbeentje, iemand die moeilijk onder te brengen is bij de in zwang zijnde stromingen.
